Need some advice
I work in my local ER, have been there for 5 months (but not a new nurse). We have EMTs that are there 24hrs for transporting pt to higher level of care and to help out from 2-10p when they are not transporting. I asked one the other day to help me in a room and he flat out refused 3 times and another RN ended up helping me. The EMT was not busy, just playing on his phone at the time. I was so mad and didn't say anything at the time because I wasn't sure really what there job description was and if they can just refuse to help. Later found out they can't refuse to help. The EMTs leave the ER and go to bed at 10 or 11 at night unless we have a transport then they have to go. We had 2 transports that night and I believe the last one they returned around 2am. They change shifts at 6:30 or 7:00 am. We had another transport at 6 am. and when this EMT walked into the ER he asked why we didn't hold the transfer until the next shift came on. I was in the pt. room and another nurse stated well maybe the next time a nurse asks you to help you won't refuse. He was mad and said that was BS. At the time I wasn't sure what I was going to do about the situation but had to talk to my boss and I don't know what will happen now. I don't know why he refused. I wasn't aware that there was anything wrong between us for him to refuse or be mad at me. But I still have to work with this person and all the other EMTs who will probably take his side. I am not going to participate in these highschool games. What should I do? And I really hope no one I work with is on this board.

Moving from ICU to ER
I started a new job in the SICU in a hospital about 50 mins. from my house, night shift and I really like my job. But I fell asleep coming home not long ago and crossed traffic and went into a ditch, not hurt though. A very small sister hospital is right across the street from me and has 2 night shift positions available in the ER. I have applied and talked with the director and will have an interview next week. I would be able to walk to work and it will be nice to work that close to where I live and serve the people of the small community I live in. I will miss the other job but staying alive and not hurting anyone out weighs that. My question is for you that have moved from ICU to the ER what is the transition like? Was it hard? Any suggestion or advice? I know pregnant women and kids will be coming into the ER and I have no experience with either. Thanks for all your responses in advance.

HELP! Interview for NICU III coming up!
I wouldn't say anything in your interview. If they don't offer the NICU job right away then start the job you have, you can always quit. Not the best thing to do you may need that hospital later for a job. Hopefully it all works out before you start.

Best pocket guide on labs?
I had a PDA in nursing school and used skyscape programs. I absolutely loved it. My clinical instructor was always having me look up things. If you don't have the money for the PDA and programs go to American Association of critical care nursing and search their pocket guides, there is one for labs. I have the cardiac, labs and hemodynamics and they are great resources.

Can I wear the same clothes to the interview?
Wear the same outfit. She won't notice. I have trouble remembering what I wore yesterday. Tina

Why don't employers start lowering wages for nurses?
I think my wages have already been cut. I did all the work my hospital wanted to get a raise and they didn't give raises this year but they still got all my extra work on committees. My health insursance stinks. I also don't think I am paid what I am worth. When you get out of nursing school and apply for your job you can always counter-offer a lower wage, but I bet you don't.

Shaky Hands
I think I will go to my doctor. My one concern is I am a runner with a resting heart rate of about 45. I wonder how low my heart rate would go with a beta blocker? I would like to remain conscious.

Shaky Hands
I have had shaky hands since grade school. I don't always notice but people and my pts. do when I am coming at them with needles. I hate it when people point it out. What do other nurses do and how do hanlde this. I love nursing. I usually just reply oh, I have always done that no problem. Lately I have noticed it is getting a little worse.
