I just completed my nurse anesthesia program in December and passed boards a few weeks ago. It was a very demanding 2 1/2 years of hard work and dedication. We are taught from the same textbooks as medical students and anesthesia residents. Hence, CRNAs can do everything MDAs can more cost-effectively and this is starting to reflect in my region of hospitals and anesthesia management corporations eliminating more MDAs and hiring more CRNAs. Furthermore, CRNAs can work independently without medical supervision if they desire.

So far as a SRNA, I've only used my precordial when my instructor asked me too (on adult patients). I've been told it is a very common practice to use them with peds. I did find it useful on a MAC case listening to air movement and obstruction.

Hang in there. You just need more time and experience to feel more comfortable in the unit. It was a solid year before I started feeling comfortable. Know who and where your resources are in case you need them. I had close to 5 years completed in critical care before i started anesthesia school.

Age is not a deciding factor at my school. Applicants are chosen on work experience, undergraduate grades, references, and character. Our age group in my class range from 23 to upper 40's.

At MTSA you jump in head first with an integrated program. Classes and clinical rotations start from the beginning. Lace your shoes tight and hold on.

Same here with me. I am planning to take a month off of work before school starts and take a nice vacation with my wife. I am also going to see my dentist and physician before my insurance changes. Also, a few overtime shifts are in my near future. Best of luck to you and congratulations.

I start anesthesia school in a few months, but while talking to a friend that has been in for about 6 months he says it feels like your standing at the bottom of Niagra Falls with your mouth wide open trying to take in all the water--compared to the volume of information you read and study.

Just be sure to know your drugs you commonly use in your unit to the intracellular level and be very familiar with the cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal systems. Be prepared to present a patient you recently cared for in your unit. If they ask you a question and you don't know, don't be afraid to say "I don't know".

I received my invite for an interview this weekend. My scheduled interview is Nov 18th. Not surprising, I am very nervous, but I am looking forward to it.
