Yale GEPN Program: Letters, Interviews, and Questions, Oh my!!!
I stumbled upon this post by accident..... I don't belong in this forum, but I am from New Haven and could not resist a reply.....perhaps I am too late?? I use to work at the School of Nursing in a non-medical role. As PP said, do not walk around New Haven -- sorry, but Yale is in the worst neighborhoods of the city. Yes, Yale is beautiful! But the surrounds are crime-ridden. Another hotel consideration for those driving might be to stay in West Haven, south of New Haven. There is I believe a Days Inn on Sawmill Road in West Haven, you can see this hotel from I-95, very very easy on and off to get to New Haven. It's a 5 minute ride into New Haven by car. Funny thing is tho New Haven is a city, there are very very few hotel choices even in surround towns! Hope this was helpful....I don't mean to be a mother hen, but for those who have never been to New Haven, I thought I'd just add to previous posts about safety. You are all so lucky to have this wonderful opp to study at Yale! Good luck!

Paying for school: using your IRAs
I've learned I can roll my 401K retirement savings (my savings, not my husbands) into an IRA and then cash that out to pay for school. This is an excellent option for me and I'm looking into it. When you use the IRA $$ for education, you don't pay the early withdrawal fee of 10% imposed by the IRS. However.....I guess you still get hit with federal taxes. Does anyone know how much these taxes are? A certain percentage? I've looked on the internet...can't find any facts...anyone know firsthand? Thanks!

Too poor to become a nurse?
Go to school!!!! I am not in nursing school (yet) but got another degree when I was 30 and had no money -- rec'd loans (no grants or scholarships, just loans). Yes, I'm still paying for them, but geez -- the opportunities for you would be ENDLESS with a nursing degree. Perhaps time will stand still while you are in school -- but let me tell you, when you are all done and working, your schooling will seem like it went by in a minute. GO FOR IT. Most importantly.....find that one special person (nursing or not) that will provide you support (mentally, emotionally) when you need it. It seems like these boards are the perfect place for that! I know a nurse whose schooling tuition was forgiven bec. she promised to work at the V.A. hospital. Just FYI.

New here....still in decision phase, need guidance
I have been lurking for weeks.....these threads have taught me so much about being a nursing student and the career. How do y'all find the time to read and post? I'm 40 y/o, a SAHM to twins, with a B.A. in English Lit. Held desk jobs until my kids came along five years ago. SOOOO not fulfilled with previous career....I DO NOT want to "work in an office" ever again. I want to help people (I don't listen to negative nurses). I came to a sincere, new-found, and deep appreciation of nurses during/after having my twins and other medical issues. My kids enter kindergarten this September and it is now time for me to decide what I'm going to do with my working life and nursing is in the forefront. I've done alot of research on area schools.....yes, I need all the science pre-reqs (very scary to me!). So my question is to any Mass/RI residents: has anyone done the BSN program at MCPHS? Or the ADN at Quinsig? Or RIC in Providence? (the fact that their are waiting lists is scary to me also, tho I will need time to do pre-reqs). I guess they all have wait lists.... I am hoping to set appts with school counselors this month, but I thought I'd ask the real pros: nursing students! Since I have a B.A. already...is it a no-brainer that I should apply to the accelerated BSN program??? One last question.......anyone do pre-req on-line courses? Are certain online schools better than others? I'm thinking Statistics and Human Growth would be the only online courses I should slightly consider. Any advice...I'm open to it! Thanks and sorry so long!
