Do you feel valued in your current nursing position?
its because they resent having to pay us so much, when they could hire task-oriented techs, but there are laws that say how many licenses must be in each unit...

Pet Peeves
biggest ER gripe seems to be hostility when you interrupt their shift by bringing them more patients...never could understand nurses being bad to other nurses...trust me it happens all too often

BEEN A CORRECTIONAL HEAD NURSE IN A STATE PRISON FOR 9 MONTHS NOW AFTER 22 YEARS OF ICU/ER EXPERIENCE IN ACUTE CARE HOSPITAL...SECURITY NOT AN ISSUE EXCEPT FOR PRIORITY...MEDICINE IS A GUEST IN THEIR HOUSE AND THEIR CONCERNS COME BEFORE OURS...WE ARE A LEVEL 4-5 MENTAL HEALTH FACILITY SO ALL OF OUR INMATES SUFFER FROM SOME SORT OF MENTAL ILLNESS...IE PARANOID SCHIZO, BIPOLARS, MAJOR DEPRESSION DISORDERS, ETC...WE GET ALL THE SEX CRIMES (RAPE, PEDOPHILIA) TOO...MOST OF THE CORRECTIONS OFFICERS ARE STELLER BUT THERE ARE A FEW THAT SEEM BENT ON PUNISHING THE INMATES FURTHER IN MANY SMALL WAYS AND RESENT THE HEALTH CARE, EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES, AND RECREATIONS OFFERED TO INMATES... NOT UNDERSTANDING THE NATURE OF THEIR DISEASE AND HOW IT AFFECTS BEHAVIOR. OCCASIONALLY I FEEL LIKE DOROTHEA DIX, TRYING TO GET THEM TO UNDERSTAND

does working in ER make you want motorcylehelmets mandatory
i worked the ER for 17 years and i found that motorcyclists not wearing helmets serves two purposes...first, in an evolutionary way, they often don't survive long enough to pass on the "stupid" genes to the next generation of riders, and second...lord knows we need the doners.

Anyone here work night shift-past or present? Need advice pls.
One Of The Tricks I Learned After 22 Years On Nights (love The Shift, Must Fit My "clock") Is Not To Switch Back To Day Mode When Off, But Keep Modified Late Night Mode, Ie Go To Sleep About 3 Am, Sleep Until Noon, Then Get All Errands And Things Done In Afternoon And Evening...then The Shock Of First Shift After Some Time Off Isn't So Severe...

old skills that we do not use anymore
Backrubs...used To Be Soothing, Relaxing And Preventative Of Bed Sores...but Appreciated By The Patients The Best...miss That Time Spent With The Patient

Anyone here work night shift-past or present? Need advice pls.
I Worked The Night Shift For 22 Years, And Loved It For All The Many Reason You Have Already Heard, Less Management Around, More Independant Practice, Great Commraderie Among Co-workers, Etc, Etc...two Major Points...i Always Stayed On A Night Shift Schedule Even On My Days Off...ie Never Went To Bed Befofe 2-3 Am And Often Slept Until Noon...tough If You Have Kids, So Try To Nap When They Are In School...second Is The Not Fair Part...my Union Worked Hard To Achieve Stable Shifts...some Of Us Worked Only Nights And Some Of Us Only Worked Days, Etc...your Hospital Management May Be Blind To All The Research That "rotating" Shifts Wreck Havoc On All Your Body Systems And Is Not Only Unhealthy For You But Unsafe For The Patients You Care For...for Some Of Us, The Night Shift "fits" And Not For Others, You Should Have The Opportunity To Volunteer For One Position Or The Other But Not Both. Good Luck
