Is there REALLY a nursing shortage?
The literature I have read indicates that the number of nurses either retiring or leaving the profession out number those who are graduating from nursing school. I graduated in 1990. I remember one of my instructors telling us how critical the shortage was at that time. She also stated that it was not going to get any better in the foreseeable future. I have been in the O.R. since graduation. I've worked different areas of the U.S. and it seems, where ever I am, we are always short.

A Quick OR Question:
In my experience it is a very rare for an OR nurse to cover PACU, pre-op ASU. Everyone is so specialized now that even OR nurses are on a "team". Neuro, open hearts, ortho, transplant, etc..

Very interesting comments----- I will be starting my FIRST assignment with cctc in Jan.'07. Since I am a newbie at traveling, I'm sure that I have MUCH to learn. I'm also aware that I may not have played all my cards as I should. It's a learning experience!

Phoenix Newbie
Hey "GO BUCKS"!! I am living in Columbus at present, but am taking an assignment in Mesa Jan.'07. Have lived here for 6 yrs--climate leaves alot to be desired! Previously lived in Dallas area for 24 yrs. Anyway, have been to Az. on several occasions. If you like to sight see there is ALOT to keep you busy for awhile. Sedona is gorgeous (approx. 2 hr.drive). Jerome is a cool little town built on the side of a mountain. Somewhat closer then Sedona. Tortilla Flats -take Superstition hwy. Of course there is Tombstone, but that's more like 3 hours from phx. Try Kartchner Caverns towards Tombstone VERY interesting! There are alot of missions with great history behind them. I haven't been to Flagstaff or Prescott yet, but I sure will do that this trip!!! I drove to Crown King-- that's a different experience. 26 miles of unpaved road with a general store?! I got tics to the bowl game in GlendaleO--H--I--O GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Bucks!!

Is your surgery dept. anything like this?
Never heard of such a thing! Not only are the pt.'s at risk but so is your license! I've been in the O.R. for 17 yrs. and worked in many different places over the U.S.,believe me, some were loosely run and chaotic. I will have to say I've NEVER worked under such conditions!
