Owning a home in California
Me and my wife just purchased our first home in the central valley (Modesto) about 6 months ago. We had no down payment, 3 bed 2 bath 4 car garage on a 1/2 acre for $340,000 and we are barely in our mid twenties. Wanna know how? We have no debt, live within our means, have impecable credit and both have great jobs. My wife will break about 90k this year as an Ortho nurse and Ill make about half that in another profession. So you see it's not impossible, you just have to set limits on your spending and know what you can afford.

Does it really cost $131,414/yr to live in CA?
I am not trying to sound harsh to the OP, but I still don't understand how some people want to have every possible thing CA has to offer without wanting to pay for it. What I mean is people want the best weather, best places to live, no traffic, and the cheapest rent and then say it costs too much to live here when you only frequent three areas of the state. Everyone that has ambitions to move to CA wants to live in those same areas, of course it is going to cost you. My wife has been a nurse for about 10 months now and makes 39 hr, every month her net is over $5000 and will be more in a few months. We live about an hour from SF, 5 hrs from LA and about 7 hrs from SD. What I'm trying to say, like Liz already did, is that there is more to offer in CA than those three locations. I am also going to school to become a nurse and am not currently employed because of my schedule, but me and my wife will still be purchasing our own 3 br 2 ba 1500sq ft home on one income for between 275,000 and 300,00. So all in all is there are great places to live in CA, just have to expand your possibilities.

Please read, need your opinions, advice!
May I ask how many is too many patients? Because I believe being here in CA you are only allowed to take a maximum of 5, I could be wrong though. Also why did you accept a job you knew you didn't like? And then why take it for 2 years? Not judging you, just trying to find out more information.

Community College Selection Process-What A Joke!
So what you're saying is that people with low IQ's shouldn't be allowed in NS? You are right, not everyone is equal, but it is that inequality that makes this field so remarkable. Why are you trying to make this a job where everyone is the same, when no other job has the same requirements? Where does it go after the IQ requirement? Perhaps no foreign nurses in U.S hospitals. Or maybe to work in L&D you must have had a child. Perhaps only women should be allowed to be nurses. My point is why try to base a requirement on something you can't really change. Sure you can go to school and gain some knowledge, but you're highly unlikely to change your IQ by the time you're in college. It all comes down to passing and not passing, and how you got to that point is just details.

Community College Selection Process-What A Joke!
Tim, I'm not going to get into a pissing match with you on who is right or wrong, I truly do understand where you are coming from. I just don't understand how you can sit there and say that students with a C average lack excellent study habits or the intellectual capacity to overcome the rigors of NS. Are you freaking kidding me??? So because a single mom of 3 kids that has trouble finding daycare (like I see on this board at least once a week) has a hard time during pre-reqs she shouldn't be allowed the opportunity to advance? I think you have your priorities a bit backwards, how does it not make you feel good inside to know that folks that may not have the traditional chance of "All A's and your in" are able to succeed? Maybe it's just my naivete, but I enjoy reading people's stories of overcoming their hardships to make it in NS. And another thing, I know for a fact you wouldn't have posted a thing about the lottery system if you had gotten in the first time. So don't try and act like a martyr about how its so unfair for everyone else when deep down you only care about yourself.

What does IQ have to do with what I am talking about? Are only folks with a high IQ allowed in nursing? Don't really see where you're going with this one.

Community College Selection Process-What A Joke!
Its statements like this that really irritate me. Are you going to tell people when you do get into NS that if they "squeaked" by, that they don't belong there? Do you think that perhaps they are just not very good at doing the traditional "bookwork" type of learning and might excel in a more clinical enviroment? Also do you think even if they did just squeak by that they are not going to still have to pass all there classes? I have read numerous threads on this board of people saying a variety of different reasons why they were not able to get all A's, does this not make them worthy of being a nurse because they didnt do well in math? This "superior than thou" attitude is what divides the nursing field. And you are right I am not the type of person that sugarcoats things, but thats not to say that I am not nice when the situation calls for it. I just feel that you get more accomplished when you are upfront about it rather than beat around the bush. Good luck with getting in, I really do mean that.

Community College Selection Process-What A Joke!
hello tim, i am a male student also looking to get into the nursing program at mjc. i really do not mean to offend but, my question is why are you trying to change something that has been in place for a long time? you don't have to apply at mjc. i am wondering where did you apply to the first time that changed their selection process on you? because i know for a fact that mjc has had the lottery for quite a few years now, my wife is an rn and graduated from mjc almost a year ago and she had to go through the lottery as well. just wondering why make a big deal out of something that is not worth making a big deal over. i really respect you for the job you are trying to pursue, but there are plenty of other places that don't have a lottery system, but they also have a few years on the wait list as well, so just take what you can get is all im saying.

Spring 2007 Classes
Taking Biology 111, Socio 101, English 101 and Intro to Computer Graphics. Just recently decided that nursing was a career that I might actually want to do. My wife is an RN and I remember helping her with NS and always feeling proud of her for working so hard. I really respect and admire all of you that made it through and also the ones that are pursuing this fine career. I went from wanting to be a police officer to an RN. I just wanted to help people and I feel that I will get more of an opportunity in the medical field than in the LE field. Sitting in a patrol car doing paperwork 80% of the day did not sound like much fun.

"Fun Classes"?
You sound very bitter and I would not like to see how you are going to treat your patients. Did you seriously move to Texas and not think that spanish is something you were going to have to deal with? I mean come on, you're right by mexico for petes sake. :wakeneo:

You'll never make it in California
Hi Kellyann Have you thought of perhaps working the night shift? That way you could go to work and your BF could watch your son while he's off of work. Then you could be home with your son in the daytime. Plus you would be making a considerable amount more money. Just a thought.

California Home Prices Drop ...
Hello everyone, I'm new to this board and just want to say what a great place this is . I have read many posts since finding this site last night and have seen the many negative comments about California as well. The one thing I cannot understand though is why does everyone that comments on CA think that you must live in the LA or SF areas only? That is the same thing as me saying your state is too expensive to live because I am only looking at the most expensive areas to buy a home at in your state. California has great weather as everyone knows, but it's not limited to certain parts of the state. I don't understand people that live in little towns in whatever state they are from say, If I move to CA I have to live right on the beach. That type of reasoning is setting yourself up for failure. My mother always told me if you have nothing nice to say, then say nothing at all. Instead on here I see someone ask a question about california and everyone that doesn't live here has an opinion on the matter. And there opinion pertains to trying to buy a house in the most expensive areas in the state. Sorry to rant, but you folks who trash CA really need to think of what CA really has to offer.
