  1. :yelclap: thank you for speaking the truth about working conditions for many, many nurses! every nurse should roll down the windows in their cars, put the windows up in their homes, go up to the rooftop, if necessary, and shout: "i'm tired of this sh*t, and i'm not going to take it anymore!! :angryfire ok, well, maybe that's taking things a bit far, but you get my sentiments. :wink2: you go girl! and may god bless you!
  2. rn seeks union hospital i'm looking for a union hospital with defined patient/staff ratios, and cnas on all shifts to handle adls (weights, i & o, bed baths, etc.). am i dreaming? or does such a hospital exist somewhere in the us? relocation is not a problem!!!! please help! thank you all for your suggestions, recommendations and comments.
  3. fran, you are in my prayers. hope you are feeling better soon.
  4. thank you, thank you, thank you! :kiss
  5. what is it really like at froedtert hospital in milwaukee? would you recommend it? any information on the working environment, salary for new rns, quality of the orientation program, etc. at froedtert hospital in milwaukee will be greatly appreciated! thanks! :)
  6. 7 days off/ 7 days on - do you love it or hate it? i'm considering a position that is using the 7/10 system of scheduling: 10-hour shifts for seven days straight, followed by seven days off. if you work this type of shift, what do you like and/or dislike about it? all input and opinions are welcome and much appreciated! thanks! :kiss
  7. i need your suggestions: can you recommend a small city or town with hospitals that you can walk to from home? i hate commuting :angryfire , and i'm looking for an environment that has less traffic, noise, and affordable housing would be a big plus. lots of trees, lakes, and beautiful scenery would be ideal. does this place even exist? :uhoh21: fyi: i'm a new grad looking for my first med/surg position. all suggestions are welcome! thank you! :)
  8. Affordability is number one! Is under $150k unreasonable for the Columbus area? For a city neighborhood, I like diversity, restaurants, parks, and a friendly, community atmosphere. This may sound odd, but I don't really like the suburbs, but I do like rural areas. So, if it's not feasible to live IN the city, any input about costs of homes in rural areas way OUTSIDE of the city? I don't mind a commute. Thanks! :)
  9. need recommendations for neighborhoods located within columbus i may be relocating to columbus, and i've see wonderful old houses within the city during my online search for housing. i've always wanted to restore an old house to its former glory, but i have concerns about overall conditions in the neighborhoods (crime, noise, litter, etc.) if you live in the city, or have lived in the city, can you recommend a good area to purchase an old home for renovation? if you think living in the city is a bad idea, let me hear from you also! all input is greatly appreciated! thank you! :)
  10. lakeland regional medical center can anyone give me the real scoop on lrmc? what are the working conditions like now with the union in place? would you recommend this facility or suggest that new grads stay away? what are the nurse/patient ratios? how about pay and differentials? benefits, in particular medical- how much is employer paid, how much is employee paid, etc. are there seasonal layoffs? :uhoh21: all input much appreciated! :)
  11. May I ask which hospital? Thanks!
  12. what happened to big sign-on bonuses? :uhoh21: just a year ago big sign-on bonuses were making the news. hospitals were offering $10,000, cars, vacations, prizes :balloons: etc. anyone know what happened? do you know of any hospitals that are still offering bonuses? if you've received a bonus, any feedback on whether it was just a gimmick? thank you for all responses and input!
  13. since the bill passed congress, the department of labor will now be able to change the status of various job descriptions from non-exempt to exempt. nurses are targeted for this change as well. :stone from what i understand, that means that employers can then implement mandatory overtime without compensating employees at 1 1/2 times their regular hourly wage because employees would officially be paid on a salary basis. :angryfire anyone heard of any labor policy changes coming to their state or workplace at the end of march 2004? :uhoh21:
  14. :angryfire good grief! i am just plain disgusted with even the notion that employers are offering, not to mention, are paying professional rns that kind of crap. by the way, the offer came from florida also.
  15. baltimore: do you love it or hate it? i'm considering a job at maryland general hospital, but have some concerns about baltimore. it's been rated as one of the most dangerous cities in the u.s., yet i've also heard that baltimore is in the midst of a renaissance. i'd love to hear from anyone who has lived in baltimore, or currently lives in baltimore. give me the pros and the cons as you see them. thanks everyone!
  16. as an rn, how often do you give bedbaths, measure i & o (including urine in catheter bags) and/or changing bed linen for your patients? does your hospital staff nursing assistants for these tasks, or have these duties become a standard part of your daily job? i'm trying to get a realistic picture of what my life as a rn will be when i get my first job after graduation. thanks for the input!
  17. do rns perform housekeeping duties where you work? i got the shock of my life this week during clinicals. i escorted a female patient to the shower. after i helped the patient with the shower and returned her to her room, i proceeded to my next assigned patient. my supervising co-nurse stopped me, and told me that i needed to clean the shower. she then walked me down the hall to the housekeeping closet and pointed out the correct bottle of disinfectant i needed to use. she then informed me of the written procedures for cleaning the shower [spray disinfectant on the walls, floors, etc. any surface that the patient may have come in contact with; wait a certain amount of time; then return and rinse the entire shower area down]. i am not a prima donna by any stretch of the imagination , but i naively thought that housekeeping did facility cleaning in the hospital. well, i remained calm, and sprayed the shower down, but luckily by the time i returned to finish, housekeeping had already finished cleaning the shower. so, my question to you is this: are you required to do housekeeping tasks in your workplace? was this just a power play by the co-nurse to humble the newbie? am i just over-reacting? all comments and opinions welcome! thanks! :kiss
  18. which do you prefer: union or non-union hospitals? if you work for a union hospital, how much do you pay in dues, and is it worth it? thank you very much for your input! :kiss
  19. cleveland or columbus? i'm relocating after graduation and need your input please! 1. which city do you prefer and why? 2. if you prefer cleveland, where would you choose to work? cleveland clinic, uhhs, other? 3. if you prefer columbus, where would you choose to work? osu, ohio health, other? :kiss thank you all very much!
  20. cleveland or columbus? 1. which city do you prefer and why? 2. if you prefer cleveland, where would you choose to work? cleveland clinic, uhhs, other? 3. if you prefer columbus, where would you choose to work? osu, ohio health, other? thank you all very much! :kiss
  21. :imbar this is a sensitive topic, but i need your input: should a new grad be concerned about being overweight for the first interview? would you recommend losing weight first before going on interviews? how are overweight nurses treated (or viewed) on your unit, or at your hospital? be totally honest, you guys! thanks!
  22. I'm graduating in May, and have been contacting several hospitals for my first nursing job. Boy, did I get a reality check regarding benefits! I had no idea that nurses were expected to share in the cost of their health insurance. Insurance that had poor coverage and huge deductibles! I know I'm a newbie, but surely I thought hospitals would provide excellent care for its CAREGIVERS! I was so wrong. And it doesn't stop there. Dental insurance, non-existent, or fully paid for by the employee. :stone Long term disability or short term disability, you guessed it, paid for by the employee. :stone Last but, not least, what's this business of having employees PAY to park? What are your benefits like? Any tips on negotiating better benefits at the time of hire? All comments welcome, thanks!
  23. Has anyone worked at either the Ohio State University Hospital or the Ohio Health System in Columbus, Ohio? If so, what did you like or didn't like about each? Were you valued as a nurse, or were you treated poorly? If you worked there before, would you work there again, or recommend anyone else to work there? All comments welcome! Thank you. :kiss
  24. Has anyone worked in the Shreveport/Bossier City Louisiana area, or know anyone who has? If so, how are the working conditions, wages, benefits, etc. I've looked at a few hospitals on http://www.hospitalsoup.com, but I'd like to have the opinions of nurses who have actually lived or worked there. Any input on hospitals to avoid, hospitals that have a great reputation, etc. is welcome! :kiss Thank you!
