  1. From what I have read, it is spread by contact only. I'm thinking all we need to be concerned about is keeping the area covered and preaching frequent hand washing. If you have physical education in your school with the use of mats or equipment of some sort, the phys ed teacher needs to be made aware of cleaning the equipment after each use by ANY student. Privacy laws may inhibit you from giving the name of the student to the teacher unless you get permission from the parent. I would advise doing that to make it easier for the teacher to pinpoint that student's use of the equipment.
  2. Don't be frightened! Just be a MOM and 99.99999% of the time, you'll make the right decision. Follow your instincts. Again, you WILL be RIGHT! Nurses have this built in ESP that keeps us on the right path. Take each day as it comes, because you'll never know what will walk through the door. As a nurse you are already capable of assessing, adjusting and adapting to any task, right???? We are nurses and WE CAN DO ANYTHING!
  3. Hi! Sylvia' I know what you mean about how we are treated. I've been a school nurse for 21yrs and the custodians get thanked right and left for "making the grounds look nice" when that's their job! I had to advertise National School Nurse Day and still didn't get a thank you from my principal! In NJ we are on the same pay scale as teachers with the same contract so we get all the teacher benefits as well. The districts, however, differ in salary depending on that contract. Some districts are wayyyyyyy off base. Mine isn't too bad. It only took me 21yrs to get to 72,000. We don't pay for any benefits yet. We are in a contract year right now and we are NOT getting very far with our school board. The benefit package will proabably be the next target. My high school has 1500 students with 2 certified school nurses. Our superintendent thinks we only need ONE!!!! We see an average of 60-70 a day not counting staff or phone calls. Are you active in your union? I am. This way the nurses concerns are heard at the meetings cause I bring them up.
