Stressed and In need of advice
First let me explain my situation. I am a new RN I graduated this summer and started working in an ER right away. I loved it! I love the fast pace, the not knowing what is going to walk in through the door... but recently I have just had it with everything at the hospital. Our ER has gone through some major changes lately and it has completely stressed out the whole staff. Everyday we walk in the door and the whole ER has basically changed from the night before. How we run the department is completely changing everyday. Besides that it does not seem that most people who work there want to work as a team. Everyone is constantly screaming at each other and it all has just gotten to be too much. I am sick of coming to work just to be screamed at by the patients, the other RN's and the doctors. I understand we are all overworked and stressed, but if we all treated each other a little bit nicer and worked together more it would be a much better place to work. So to get to the point my questions.... is this normal? Am I just being to sensitive? Should I stay or should I look to go somewhere else? I hate to leave, I have only been there 4 months and feel like if I leave I am being a quitter, but dont know how much more I can handle. Advice is desperately needed!

How Do You Know If Er Nursing Is For You?
You really need to be able to multitask. As some of the other replies stated you do it all down there. You never know what is going to walk through the door. You always think the worst case scenarious are going to come via ambulance but not always the case. The other day I had a guy come in with his wife after a van had fallen on him. You need to like to have constant chaos and a continous challenge. I say try it and see.

IV Phenergan and Toradol "Push"
WOW! Good information to know. We always give phenergan IV and toradol IV in the ER. I have never once been told to dilute it and have never seen any of the other nurses diluting it either. As a new nurse that is really helpful. I have never had anyone complain, but will make sure i dilute it from now on! Thanks for the info!

Chicagoland Area RN Salaries
I graduated a year ago and most people who graduated in my class are making $27 as a new grad (night shift with differential). For people with experience, around 30 or higher. It also greatly depends on which hospital you work for. Northwestern tends to not pay as high as some of the other hospitals because it has such a great reputation and amazing benefits. I have a couple of friends who work there and they all love it! Hope this helps!

Is 26 too old to go back to school?
Definitely not too old! Also if you have a BA. have you thought about taking an accelerated program? Its for people who already have a degree but want to change careers. It takes aroud a year in a half. Just a thought!

ER-101...Route/Meds/Terms
Thanks for the info! I am a new grad. ER nurse and they are very helpful! Any suggestions on little books to buy to keep in my pocket? I see a couple of nurses have them, but they are all different. Just wondering if anyone has found one they really like! I work in pediatric ER and adult ER.

Gn
a GN is a graduated nurse. Not all states have it but if the state you live in does it basically means you can work without taking the boards as a GN. You basically have the same responsibilities as a nurse. The license is usually 3 months. hope this helps!
