  1. My statement above concerning the senator with a high school education was to merely point out that lawmakers should lead by example. I do believe anyone with any level of education can appreciate and value an education. I do not, however, appreciate the fact that this legislation was introduced without careful consideration as to the impact on the workforce and our state colleges and other institutions providing our communities with RN's.
  2. The Senator who introduced this to the Senate in my state has a high school diploma listed as the highest level of education. :wink2:
  3. My state has legislation pending that would require all registered nurses to complete a BSN degree within 10 years of initial licensure. I don't know if it will pass but as an ASN grad. I am happy I will soon be completing my BSN degree.
  4. Hi Thrashej, My husband has been working nights for 10 years. I have installed Levelor room darkening shades in 3 of our bedrooms. They are inside-mount and allow very little light through each side. I also have curtains hanging to the sides to block the remaining light. They make the rooms completely dark and cool! I pull the shades up in the day when he is not sleeping to allow light in the rooms. They are available in several colors but they are expensive. I purchased these through JC Penney by custom order. He also uses a machine (white noise) to drown out sounds. Good luck in your position!
  5. Hi futurenjnurse, I completed the nursing program at GCC in 2003. I am going to speak to this year's graduating class next week. I don't know if there is currently a waiting list. I believe they require a NET composite min. 65 and reading comprehension of 65. If you go the school website, they should have a link for the nursing selective admission packet on the homepage. In addition, you should sign up for an information session if you have not already done so. This session is required as part of the admission process and they will answer all of your questions. You might also want to take all of the non-nursing courses prior to entering the program. Good luck to you!
  6. Hi Asparagus, I am currently working at Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) as an RN and I am enrolled in the BSN program at TJU as well. I applied for the BSN/MSN program but did not want to take the GRE's (they will waive them if you have an acceptable GPA in the BSN). I am now finishing up the BSN and will move on to the MSN program. I have had a relatively good experience so far. I have been able to take all of my courses online and selected my own clinical sites. The University recently moved the MSN program from The School of Graduate Studies (lumped with all other health professions) to the School of Nursing. I imagine this will improve the MSN experience. There are many experienced faculty members here who are willing to assist you along the way. The school gives a 10% tuition discount to all health professions students and The University has paid for the remaining 90%. I did look into the Drexel program but I did not know anyone who had gone through it so I opted to go with Jefferson. Best of luck to you in finding a program!
  7. Hi lpjmmb, I live in South Jersey and work in Philadelphia as well. I commuted from various areas in Burlington County to CHOP for 15 years. I guess I just got used to the drive! Leaving by 6:15 a.m. to start at 7 a.m. is reasonable if you are about 15 or 18 miles away. There are a couple of parking garages that you can likely pay for with pre-tax payroll deductions. When I left 3 years ago I was paying $5.00 a day to park across the street from CHOP. I work at Jefferson now and the drive downtown is much worse! I start at 8:30 a.m. and traffic is much heavier at that time. In addition to this I pay $10.00 a day to park. The drive can be unpredictable and frustrating but the job experiences have been very rewarding. Think about how interested you are in the position. I think the traffic for the 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. shift is tolerable (my husband drove in for this shift for years). Best of luck to you!
