I have my dream job:) minus the hours that I have to work! I have been working L & D for 2 years now and do love what I do along with everyone I work with..........but the hours (night shift) are killing me and my family. I have 3 children, all in school and my husband works regular hours from our home office. I have decided to apply for positions within the company I work for that would get me to day hours.......home health care is where I am first going to apply, because it does interest me-but then I can have the same hours (or close to it) that my family has! So for the advice, should I tell this to my current boss or could I compromise myself? I rarely see them since I work nights, so I do not really have any sort of relationship with them.......they should not be 100% surprised since I did put in a request for day shift a month or so ago-I just do not see it happening anytime soon! I do not want to burn bridges in any way, and have NO issues with the area I work in.........I just need to put myself (lack of sleep) and my family first!!

As a L&D nurse with 2 years experience, I have seen much longer for the laboring process. Since it had been 13 years since her last birth, we would expect her to be slower-more like a 1st time mom! Also, she was induced - if she had come in already in labor on her own, the process probably would have been faster. I think the epidural can slow the process, but also think it can speed up the process. Each and every delivery is diifferent! Even with the epidural, labor is exhausting! I agree with the other poster, if the baby looks good and no signs of infection-no reason for a c/section!

Tough decision and probably not enough time to make the perfect (if there is such a thing) choice for yourself and your family. I am at the other end of your decision, so maybe this can help-not sure. I am exactly where I want to be professionally-the hospital I ALWAYS wanted, working in L&D.........but I am FTE 3rd shift-not my choice schedule. I have 3 children-grade school and high school. My husbands schedule if VERY friendly for our family, but my schedule is not. I have put in for days, but I will not get it for quite awhile..........so considering putting my "ideal" job on hold for a few years to enjoy more time with my family. I am not leaving nursing, just going to find a better work schedule for us! The reason I bring up my "issue" is that you first need to decide what is MOST important for today........it sounds as though no matter which choice you make, it will not be perfect-but wat area would you feel most comfortable? For each person it is a very personal decision! Make a list, as generic as that sounds that is what led me to my decision-now I just need to follow through! good luck!

You can do it! I did not go back to school at 29 after the history you have with your children......But decided to at 29 after my 3rd child was born! I stayed home after my first two were born, but always yearned to be a nurse. So after the third and I still felt the same way-he was born in March and I started in September 2001! I have been working on a labor and delivery floor for two years now and do not regret any of it! The only advice I will give that I am learning right now is that your goals when you walk into school may not be what they are when you graduate.........Since I started with 3 young children, I thought 3 12 night shifts would work best for my family.......My youngest started 2nd grade when I went to work.......My other two are high school now........they all have busy lives and my husband hates taking care of all of it when I am gone at night......so after two years, I have started to look for a different shift, which probably means I will have to leave my field of choice-but anything for my family:) Good luck, it can be done!!

Hi all! I have been lingering on these boards for quite some time. I currently work on the hospital floor at a job that I do love, however the hours are not loved by me or my family! My first year I worked rotating (day/night), and this last year has been strictly nights. I work L&D and work at least 6 hours call/week on top of my regular 3-12hour shifts. I am a "later in life" nurse and my children are grade school and high school. The last year of my nursing school I worked at a LTC and truly enjoyed working with them, hoping to maybe move into the hospice area of health care. Any advice is welcome about pay/scheduling/etc. I need to work fulltime to finish paying off my school loans and since my husband is self employed I need benefits! TIA

I have tons of questions.......newer nurse with one year experience in L&D(OR included), but need a better schedule for kids. LOVE my job, unfortunately we are expected to do 36 call hours each month and have been called in for each......the $$ is great, but I feel as though I never see my kids:( Do not need to be home when they get home (DH works from home), but would like to be home earlier than 8pm each night. Not really sure about how HH RN's are pd, benefits.......any info would be great!

hang in there everyone! I just posted on Friday and here it is Sunday am------was able to log on to the pearson vue website this am and found out I Passed!!!Woohoo! I got all 265 and was really unsure! It can be done, and if you stick with it-it will be done!

Joining the "265" club. Took the test this morning-sat there for 4 1/2 hours and got all 265.......part of me feels as though I failed, not sure what the other part feels........not sure how I am going to make it through the weekend. The paper regarding early info says 2 business days........is it really 2 business days? I know exactly where each on this thread feels, it is a horrible feeling. Think I am going to go and take a nap, I truly feel physically drained. Prayers to all:heartbeat

I graduated at the end of October, and very scared to take boards-I think this is "norm" for everyone! (hope so) I just recieved my approval letter from pearson......so now I need to schedule my test time/date. I am still working on Kaplan and have Saunders flashcards......but with the holidays - not sure how long is to long to wait to take boards. Will not do it before Thanksgiving, too soon........do I want to worry about it between Thanksgiving and Christmas, or should I just wait until about the second week in January-or will that be too long? It would be about 2 1/2 months after graduating........whatever I do, I will continue studying like crazy. I have been scoring 59-66% on Kaplan. Saunders questions seem kinda easy(not all, but just compared to Kaplan).......I have started a new job-I landed a Labor and Delivery job and this past week was my first week on the floor..........I need advice from those with experience!

Yes, they have closed the online program-at least out of St.Louis. The last graduating class in the program is about to graduate on Oct 31.........which I am in, and so glad to be done!!!

ok, just a warning-I am based out of the St.Louis campus. I started the online ADN program fall06. It has been a constant nightmare! My graduating class is the last online class to graduate from this program this October. The St.Louis based online program will be discontinued after Oct '08. I do not know what they have done with the stundents who were enrolled after me, it is pretty hush hush. My entire experience with this school has been a roller coaster ride. We never know about our clinicals or classes until the last minute. I have only be there about 2 yrs and have been through 4 advisors-they just keep leaving. My current situation for the 8 week class I am beginning today-yes, just today is the I recieved an email from my teacher just this morning that our class is at 5pm, not 6pm that I had signed up for-and tomorrow is suppose to be my first OB clinical-and no information has been given. I am not even sure if I have clinical tomorrow.........I would not start their program again if I had the choice. Our accredidation was in limbo at the end of last year, so I went two months without even knowing if I would be able to graduate and sit for my boards-and the worse part is this two months included Christmas! It was HORRIBLE!! Good luck with your decision, but I would be very leary. Deaconess was an amazing school, that is who I signed up with........once Devry took over, too many changes that do not keep the student as the most important factor.

I am glad they are finally coming through for you Kris. If I would have been able to receive a refund and leave-I would have done it, but it was not offered to me, and after 4 semesters at CCN-I have about 18000 in student loans........I could not just walk away with that, I needed something from it all!

I am also in this same situation, but was one of the "lucky" ones that they extended the closing date for and I graduate 10/08. I have requested an official letter from the state board of nursing stating that once I finish the classes listed on my cirriculum with passing grades, I will be allowed to sit for the NCLEX. I have not received this yet, only emails from misc. people at Chamberlain. I have also told them I will not pay the remainder of balance due until this happens.......... Even though the online program has a bad rap, I am unsure of how true this is for the other programs they offer. A nights/weekend BSN program is about to open and another campus in Arizona(think that is the state) is about to open. As you can see, I am trying to have faith-but I am not going to let them make any promises anymore without the follow through! Good luck grad2be-are you in the June graduating class?

I have actually finished 50% of my ADN, and am 6 weeks into the final year.........so about 2 1/2 semesters left to finish my ADN. My problem is that the reason I am thinking of leaving is that the school I am going to is about to lose their accreditation due to low passing scores......will they take me with that sort of background? I have a great gpa, and have done so mostly on my own, my current school is horrible when it comes to teaching. How can I find the passing rate for this school?

Hi all.......Let me explain my story before I ask for help.........went back to school in fall01, one class at a time, summers off at a local college (maryville university) to take my prereq's such as chem, a&p I & II, psych, soc, micro etc. Then started a local college last fall in their ADN program. Just found out the program is being closed. Not sure what that means for me since I just found out yesterday. Upon searchingh this board for more info, I keep seeing Excelsior and wonder what it is and the cost-any help? thanks in advance

Yes, this program is bad news and I advise anyone to run. I am to graduate in Oct08, and it looks as though this will not happen. I did not even find this out because they were gracious enough to call me-it was because I logged onto the studen portal and found what I will call a "Dear John" letter. We knew we were in review, State even came last semester and "assured" us we would be fine and they would work with us.........we will see. Right now I do not even know what to do today......is my semester over even though we only started 5 weeks ago and it should not be over until the end of February. Since they posted this letter on Friday late afternoon, there is no one to call. Another student called our teacher-but she did not even know about this situation. I and most other students have dealt with a lot each semester from hospital changes, class changes and a lot of other frustations-this has definately taken the cake. Now I am trying to figure out what to do - do I try and move to another program at the same school...or just sit and wait for all my $$ to be given back and get into another (better) school? Any advice is welcome. What a great Christmas present this is........and birthday, my birthday is in less than two weeks also...........

I agree-don't give up so soon....just take your time, really read the instructions, then once you finish go back and really read each question to find out what they are asking for.......I underline and circle things a lot!! You keep being pulled back for some reason!

sargent...how is the RN - BSN program? How many hours/days per week? If they shape up, I am considering to just keep on......

Kris, something to think about when the state was here-they sat down with students and asked about our questions/concerns. One concern was about our current teacher who keeps telling us if we fail this class we start all over due to a new cirriculum. The state said they cannot force us to take the same class over that we have already passed with them..........she even went on to say most likely if we are paying by loans, a loan program will not pay for the same class at the same school-translation they need to put you in to the best fit without asking you to retake a class you have already passed. amy

just wondering how all of this has been panning out for the two of you........I am an ASN student, but in MO.........issue now for us is that the state came in a week ago and tons of rumors are going around about credidation............I am really worried, as if stressing about class was not enough...........

so.......since the FP classes are days-can someone give me an example of the schedule? I have seen the cirriculum, and I do have some of the classes, but I am just wanting an idea of how many times a week at school......times/how long scheduled for clinicals? With all the Chamberlain issues, I am trying to get additional info incase they loose accredidation-then I am back in boat A. Hopefully this will not happen to me, especially since next month I start my final year at the school......graduation for me is OCT 2008.
