  2. My mom works LTC and had a pt needing an enema. He is standing in the BR hands on the sink. As soon as she starts the enema, he burst out in song "God bless America!" sang the whole thing. A couple years later I'm in NSG school... for my "well elder" project I am required to interview someone over 60. I chose someone I met at church. She tells me her late husband was a resident at the facility where my mom works. We stop by to see my mom... they remember each other... My mom says, "he had a beautiful singing voice" and his widow replies "I never heard him sing." Had stopped to answer a call light on tele. Very tall, very thin, long legged pt on the floor, legs splayed out, struggling to rise. 2 banana peels on the chair, 2 bananas on the bed. Didn't see any bananas under pt though. Couple more staff come in and we get pt back to bed. As we are walking out the door, male nurse says, "for a minute there, I thought you slipped on a banana." We all busted up laughing.
  3. I don't know any of them yet. Maybe I will put the question to the supervisor and have her choose for me. I have always thought I would love hospice and am ready for a change from the chaos of PCU, but kind of intimidated by being out on my own. I know there are resource people I can call, and they told me there would be a 3 week training with the org, and then 2-3 weeks at the facility. I hope that is enough to get me off to a decent start.
  4. Hi everyone, I am interested in working for hospice, have interviewed, they have 2 positions. Case manager 12 pts, home visits or the same but with nsg home pts. I have 1 year pcu experience, but still find myself asking lots of questions. Not sure which job to ask for? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
  5. I love it when they call, you enter the room, and they have spit a little something up and exclaim "I'm THROWING UP!!!" What do you say? "I can see that?"
  6. I started taking effexor during 3rd semester. It seemed to help me in some respects, my friends said I was more fun to be around, but it also made me fuzzy headed and I definately noticed a decrease in my test scores. One of the se's is anxiety, which is what I was taking it for. It is a nasty medicine to wean off. The recommended duration of treatment is supposed to be 18 months or less. I was on it almost two years and weaned myself off (counting granules over 2-3 months time.) I sure wasn't pleasant to be around. Physically got electric shock like feelings in my head and spine. I have been off for 6 months now and have lost 25 lbs, (gained about 40 while on this med). I also felt that I had a flat affect while on it. But considering going on something else now that I realize that the stress doesn't stop after graduation... just changes. Just wanted to let you know that I believe there is an effect on schoolwork. My friend took Zoloft and Concerta and had good results. Good luck to you and maybe you can find a med that is more friendly.
