  1. A possibility that comes to my mind is borderline personality disorder. And sometimes i think it is appropriate to tell a patient to 'cut the crap.' I can't speak to this one without more information, but sometimes some are simply too out of control and others occasionally appear to want be the child to the parent nurse who sets boundaries.
  2. 1) Don't necessarily rely on report. People forget things, confuse their patients, etc. Look at the patient, make your own assessment / judgements. 2) Learning critical care is like drinking water from a fire hydrant. julie
  3. md = medical doctor. mds are not simply doctors, they are medical doctors. possibly another approach to easing their fears.
  4. I am one of the fortunate ones who have woken up during surgery, but it was no big deal. I was under conscious sedation (propofol and I don't know what else) versus GA for a bunionectomy. I remember kind of sitting up and saying "That hurts!". The anesthetist asked what and I said "my foot!". Then boom, I was gone again. That was my left foot. I told the anesthetist about it prior to getting the R foot done and it did not happen again. Sounds like CS is the route to go whenever possible (obviously not during CABG or such!!) birdgrrl ps - i was also awake during tooth extraction as a child (10yo, in 1978). i have no idea what i was under with then. that was terrifying. i was told i'd be out.
  5. How different are the roles of US and Canadian nurses? I'm thinking of relocating from the US to Canada. Any and all info is appreciated. I do have info on the process, but not on the substantive differences between the jobs. Many thanks! julie
