  1. I've heard that many of the prerequisite classes for nursing are foundational, but also a form of "weeding out" those who don't have the study skills/critical thinking skills/stamina for the actual nursing program. I guess my question is this: are the prereqs we take like anatomy, microbiology and pharmacology on par with the level of difficulty of actual nursing classes, or are they a walk in the park in comparison? I'm busting my butt in my anatomy class right now and getting an excellent grade, but it has been an eye opener to me as far as just how much effort these classes take. So, how would you rate the difficulty of the preparation courses in comparison to the difficulty of your nursing program? :studyowl:
  2. Well we took our second practicum on muscles and I've managed to maintain my A average for the class! I was very worried about this one because it is traditionally the hardest test and I can see why. I'm exhausted and don't want to think about origins, insertions and actions for a long time! We're half way through and so far, so good. Hope everyone else is making it through okay, too. Cheers!
  3. Meh. It's 2:30am and I'm studying muscles. Test is on Thursday at 1pm. Why can't I get these actions to stick in my head? :angryfire I was practicing my flash cards with my husband and he was recalling the answers better than I was! :trout: I think I can, I think I can....
  4. I will be taking 12 units related to my non-nursing BA. Nursing prereq classes will be physiology and gerontology. I will have no life.
  5. I've always like Schuyler, Moira, Anne and Claire for girls. For boys I like Craig, Noah, Ray, and Jack. :)
  6. I'm hoping some of you will be able to shed some light on the situation and offer up any advice or information for my family. My nephew has had two seizures in the last 24 hours. My brother called me and is a wreck over it and was hoping I might be able to help him find out what to do for his son. He seized for about a minute yesterday afternoon with no previous history of it. My brother called the paramedics who took him to the ED. My nephew has been vomiting and having diarrhea for a 1-2 days prior to this. The ED doc took a cat scan and said everything appeared normal and referred to his pediatrician for follow up, blood work, and a referral to a neurologist. My brother was told to place his son on his side and make sure he didn't choke on or bite his tongue should it happen again in the meantime. My brother can't get an appointment to see the Peds doc until Monday and my nephew just had his second seizure a few hours ago. Upon calling the Peds office after the second seizure, my brother was told that the doctor was booked and my nephew still couldn't be seen 'til Monday. So, my brother and nephew are going to have to wait it out for three more days until they can be seen Monday morning. I don't know anything about child seizures and I don't know what to tell him to watch out for, to ask the doctor about, or where to get more information. My brother is young and this is his first and only child and I know he's feeling alone and helpless right now. Any thoughts, suggestions, or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  7. Well, I got a 94% on my first lecture exam, with extra credit it bumps up to 103%, which I'm going to siphoning off of the rest of the term because this stuff just gets harder with the passing weeks. My class must have a bunch of smartypants in it because our class average is over 100%! My instructor says it's the best he's ever seen in all his 30 years of teaching. I breathed a sigh of relief after we got our grades back, but it is right back to it for me because I've got to learn about 135 origins/insertions/actions for the muscles. >. I just found out today that we're going to be working with a human cadaver next week, which I wasn't expecting but I am appreciative of. How 'bout the rest of you? What are your labs like?
  8. For me, I say LVN, no question. I've looked into at least a dozen MA and LVN programs and found that (where I live) if the program is through a vocational school, none of the credits would end up transferable to an RN program at a community college or university. An LVN program at a community college usually has a better chance of having transferable courses (or even better, a bridge program)...an MA program at community college might have a few courses that will count. I wouldn't want to be forced to start over as your friend had to. If you know you want to become an RN, then I'd go for the LVN. Without detracting from the value of either profession, LVNs are nurses, while medical assistants are not. Good luck to you in whatever you decide!
  9. I'm taking Anatomy and Biological Anthropology this summer at community college. I'm getting my BA in another discipline in May, 2007, and finishing up nursing pre-reqs during this time to hopefully get into a nursing program after I graduate. Best of luck to all of us!
  10. Yes, I've been rating on this site for a few years now. Of course, I take some of those posts with a horselick of salt, but I do use it quite a bit when planning out my classes. The one semester I didn't check out the professors before registering I regretted!
  11. Hiya! I'm taking an 8-week anatomy course this summer. We've had one practicum on bones so far that most of my class got As on! Our first lecture exam is tomorrow and I'm trying not to stress too much. Best of luck to the rest of you. I'll let you know how it goes...
