  1. Thank you for your response. That was my biggest concern besides the cost being able to complete those hours on weekends only. I suppose urgent care centers may also be used to fulfill that requirement as well. I will also look into applying to Kaplan. Thank you once again.
  2. I'm just curious as to whether or not its at all feasible to work a 8-4/ 9-5 while enrolled in an NP program. I was initially accepted to the online program at South University but had to decline when I realized if I kept my current position there was no way I'd be able to complete my practicum hours for the FNP program as my availability to complete these hours would be weekends only. I'm not even sure if I were to use my PTO that it'd be enough to accomplish this. (Not looking to switch jobs as I'm relying on the tuition reimbursement for assistance). Has anyone faced a similar dilemma? If so, how were you able to complete the program? I am receptive to any feedbacks or comments Thank you.
  3. WHOA!! This is exactly why I'm debating if I should even other getting my NP. I recently relocated from NY to FL and while I have a "cushy" position so to speak making 86K working from home I sometimes feel like I need to have a back up. The RN salaries in FL have me shaking my head and the NP salaries are simply atrocious. I can't see any good reason to go spend $30k or more to go back to school for less pay and more work. With that being said I honestly sometimes feel like I'm in the wrong field....
  4. I am also interested in pursing the dual MSN/MPH degree. I'm not finding many available programs though (at least not affordable ones) in an online format.
  5. Laflaca, did you have any prior public health experience prior to obtaining this job. I have always had an interest in public health especially after meeting a retired nurse who worked for the UN and traveled all over Africa providing care. She was also an NP. I'm am undecided if I want to the NP route and get a post masters in public health thereafter or get my MPH now and then pursue such areas as either epidemiology or infectious disease. I've also looked into obtaining a dual MHA/MPH degree. As you can see I'm still researching and trying to figure it all out.
  6. The pay rates still don't really measure up. The cost of living really isn't that much less from what I'm seeing. Only thing you save on down here is housing and that only depends on where you decide to purchase a home. I've found that there are some other things that in fact cost more.
  7. Hoping for the best and better times in florida
  8. I so despise that phrase, "but you get paid in sunshine." I don't know but the last time I checked sunshine doesn't pay the bills. It really and truly is a disgrace. I guess if I am ever forced to leave my current position I'll do travel nursing. I have no plans on moving back to NY. Yeah, I could be making over 90K as a RN in some areas but that doesn't go very far these days. Hoping things will improve here in FL in terms of payscale equating with cost of living.
  9. I relocated from NY to FL almost a year. Thankfully, I had a telecommuting position and was able to take my NY salary with me. Florida is expensive, especially South Florida. I don't love my job but it pays the bills. I have been looking at possibly exploring opportunities her in FL but my goodness the rate of pay is quite dreadful and honestly, I want to cry everytime I see salary postings. I'm just puzzled as the rate of pay does not equate to the cost of living here. Can someone please explain why is this the case and what can be done if anything to advocate for a more fair salary for RNs and LPNs alike Even in researching NP salaries for FL as that's my goal I'm quite disappointed. What's a nurse to do...
  10. Caseload of about 60-65. Assigned to various facilities throughout boroughs. Cases referred via e-fax. You're expected to work 9-5. No weekends unless you volunteer to work on call. If you go past your shift its on you. I guess it depends on how good you are with a computer. The medical director for my dept is awesome and very involved and informative. Supervisor and staff are very supportive and help each other out if fall behind. So far from what I see it seems like a very supportive environment. Not very demanding. Work looks manageable but once I'm handling my own cases I'll have a better idea
  11. I only just started this past week. It depends on what aspect of CM you're in. I'll be in discharge planning sons little different from typical case management. Salary depends on experience but ask for what you want and they'll probably meet it. As far as working from home; that'll be st least 6months from now. Then once trained to work from home you're pretty much always home unless you choose or need to come into the office
  12. Thanks for your response. I'm glad to hear all that. I have my interview next week. Wish me luck.
  13. Hi, is there anyone out there who works or has worked for Emblem Health as a case manager in NY? What was/is your experience working for them? What is the salary range? How soon were you able to transition from office based CM to home based CM?
  14. Hi, Does anyone out there work for metropolitan jewish health system in the capacity of homecare RN. If so, What has your experience been like with this company. I'm looking to make the switch from med-surg to homecare. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
  15. What unit do u work? I was recently offered an ICU position there. I want to get some insight into what the working conditions are really like there before I make my decision and also can anyone tell me how is there ICU training?
  16. Thanks for all the replies so far. I am in agreement with everyone. I don't really want to move because of the pay cut and Miami is just as expensive if not more expensive than NY from what I have seen just from visiting. It's really not cost effective for me to make that move. At least not at this point. The weather I won't mind because I'm originally from jamaica and the weather is pretty much the same except it doesn't get cold during the "winter" months. I'm planning on pursuing nurse anesthesia so money won't be too much of an issue once I've gotten that accomplished. However, I was hoping he would wait for the move once I was done with school. This way I wouldn't mind moving elsewhere. For my bf it would be a good move as far as salary as he'd basically be making what I'm making now as an RN. Can you believe that? It's crazy. I do have family in other parts of Florida so maybe we can look into other areas. We will see. It's a tough decision. The move is good for him, but not for me.
  17. Hi all, My boyfriend was offered a job with a trucking company and one of the areas in which they place their workers is Miami. Placement is available in several other states as well. However, he's seriously considering the miami area as the pay is more. It's unbelievable what he'll be getting paid vs. the pay cut I'll be taking if I make the move. I am currently living in NY and as a new grad working nights i'm making over $39/hr. This brings my annual income to over $76K. From what I'm seeing in Florida and most of the southern states I'll be taking a generous paycut. Not to mention that the cost of living in Miami especially is just as bad as NY. I hardly think it's worth the move. Can someone please give me some insight? any advice? I've heard of nurses who travel from FL to NY and work 6days straight and return to FL and be off for 8 days. Is that even worth it?
  18. Hi there, I just wanted to know whether or not you took the job at Bronx leb and if so what has your experience there been like? I was recently offered a job there for their ICU program. But I may have to hold off on it. I'm currently working at New York Hospital Queens and hate it there. The only reason why I'm not jumping on the Bronx Lebanon job is because the commute from Queens to the Bronx is gonna be a killer. If i drive I'll be spending close to $200 a month in tolls. IF i take the train it's a minimum 2 hour ride. If they're willing to let me come after i complete my 1 year (I'm already halfway there) I might consider moving to the bx or at least somewhere in BK or Queens that's close by the D train. I just want to know if it's worth the move. Your response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  19. Thanks whoofers. that seems to be the general consensus i'm getting from a few people so far. nyhq isn't all it's cracked up to be. I think most people stay on my floor cuz it's not as heavy as the others and the nurse manager is very flexible. But I want to learn and it's obvious it ain't gonna happen here.
  20. That's good to hear. Where I currently work. Nurses don't even do IVs. I swear I was doing more stuff in clinicals than now that I'm on the floor. Feel like I'm just pushing meds. No critical thinking and all that. I don't want to become a lazy nurse like most of the nurses on my floor.
  21. thanks for the replies so far. I appreciate it. It's supposedly a new unit. I don't even know if it's up and running yet. I just want to be somewhere where i'm gonna learn. I'm not learning anything really at NYHQ. Probably cuz of the floor that I'm on.
  22. I work at New York Hospital Queens
  23. I use to work at LIJ as a respiratory therapist. I heard awful things from a lot of the nurses who went thru the fellowship program. Majority of the people who started don't even manage to stay a full year. From what I understand the training is exceptional. The problem is once you get on the unit. As mentioned by mother23, not an inviting environment. Typically they like to "pick" on the new people. As for manhasset I haven't heard stories like these. So, I would say pick manhasset over LIJ. I for one interviewed for the program last year and for some reason the recruiter was very nasty to me. I'm currently working with another girl who interviewed and had the same experience. Guess she was having a bad day. She kept trying to push me off to LIJ's MICU and I knew i didn't want to go there. She kept pressing, I almost walked out of the interview. Was a horrible experience. Glad i'm not there though. Don't pay enough as it is. Not worth the hassle unless u gonna get the training and keep it moving after that.
  24. Hi, Does anyone have any info on maimonides?I have an interview scheduled for July 3rd for their ventilator unit. Nurse patient ratio is suppose to be 1:4. Currently work on a geriatrics floor at NYHQ. Realize I'm not learning much. Pretty much like being in a nursing home. So, after 4 months I'm ready to go. Any advice on where to go from here?
  25. Wow!! I guess I have to convince my bf that the move isn't worth it. I mean yeah cost of living is ridiculous in NY but at least I'm comfortable and can manage. If I move to VA I still have my student loans to pay which isn't gonna change. The only thing cheaper is housing. Right now I'm paying $1200/mth for mortgage, which is pretty cheap for NY. I think I'll pass on the VA move; at least for now. Maybe when kids come in the picture. It's a great place to raise kids and I'm in no rush right now.
