Can they switch your unit after hire date?
I think the HR person should have informed you during your meeting/interview with them. I was told something similiar even though I decided not to accept the offer because i got a better one....i was told all 3 of us would work in M/S/tele floor for about a month, then prior to the end of the 4-weeks they would determine whether i should continue to the step down or if i need to spend more time at the M/S area before coming in. Spending more time means that they need you to acquire more skills and have taken the ones they think are more suitable at this point. IMHO, I'm thinking it's the same thing that happened in your case. i don't know why they are not telling you upfront. don't worry about it. It's actually for your own good that you learn more skills and be more proficient and independent before moving on."Step-down" is no joke. If you are seeing your NM, be sure to ask what plans they have for you, that way, he/she can explain better. Goodluck

Prairie View A&M students
Prairie View? whooooop! Not to discourage anyone but i was there myself. They make it soooo hard and tough! Luckily, i transfered some of my classes to another school and still graduated the same semester as i would have if i stayed at prairie view. I didn't loose anything. I was only there for one semester. I bagan doubting and asking myself if nursing was actually for me. But i only had to ask that question while in prairie View. Once i entered the other school, i soon discovered myself. I would have doubted if nursing was for me and would have left for something else mistakenly if i didn't transfer. Now i'm working in ICU and doing great! Anybody either in their program or planning on going there should listen to nurse Pvnurse1. She has been there all thru and knows better. There's no sweet-talking you into hell! Bottom line? Ask lots of questions before going there so you won't start having a second thought afterwards.. Be prepared. It's do-able but you really have to have patience and take all their disorganizations and stuff.. I couldn't stand all those. In whatever decision you make, goodluck..

New Graduate nurse seek help please.............
Sorry to hear this news Vernessa. We all get nervous and make little little mistakes as new grads but survive it anyway.Yours was just unfortunate. i'm surprised they didn't try to talk to you and give you more chance to gather yourself together as a new grad before terminating you. That's ok, it's not the end of the world. You know what? This has happened to one million nurses all over. so, you are not alone. There has to be a way out. That action may have been a way of getting you to where you actually belong. Don't see yourself as a failure because you are not. I also believe it's an expereince. Gather yourself together and move on. Look for a job that is not as fast paced so you can learn your skills before moving on. Go on to the net and search all over for companies that can help with petitioning for you (may be ones that are closer to you so you don't have to risk leaving your family - or if single, i don't think i would care when it comes to petitioning for me,I'll relocate and when i get my expereines and everything, i can move to where i really want to be. I'm pretty sure you'll get something. Goodluck and cheer up! (((((hugs)))))

Doctors' rounds
i figure it also depends on what area of nursing you are working. I mean, if you are in medsurg with 6-8 patients, i don't see how one rounds with all the docs and residents alike. You can, sometimes but not all the time. ICU nurses has 2-3 patients and can afford to round with everybody. at most they are either at one pt's room or the next and no other to really call for pain med, change a beeping IV pump or some crazy calls from other patients. It's all different depending on the area you work...
-
Doctors' rounds
I never round with doctors except when absolutely necessary. Or when i need to tell them something about the patient or want them to sign something after seeing the pt. I usually just say hi Dr. so and so...and if they need you around, they ask you right there. Usually when they come in, they look at the chart, ask the charge nurse questions and go into the pt's room. Sometime, when the charge nurse is not sure of the question, she throws it to me and that's when i come in briefly and explain and that's it. Don't let anybody intimidate you. Some of those docs are snub, i'm telling you, you greet someone and he just passes by you and walk away without saying a word! Is that someone you want me to run after? Nope. Bottom line, do rounds with docs when absolutely necessary, or when they need you around for questions..goodluck!

frustated with job search!!
Just keep applying...can relate to your frustrations but just gather yourself together and keep applying. And like you said, be open to any shift(you can always change it later on ..LOL..). Conisder hospitals where ypu did your clinicals too since they already know your face, be boldenough to walk to the Nurse Mgrs and ask..Goodluck!

Leaving things for Day Shift
I thought it was only me! Only few days back i was giving report and told the day shift nurse that there was no blood availabe in the blood bank yet for my patient whose H&H went low. She just went angry and statrted saying all manner of thins. Living jobs for them ..bla bla ...But you know what, I came back later in the evening and there was still no blood! I didn't get mad and she was all happy. Blood was later available in my shift and i administered that to the patient. Botton line...Never mind them, just do your best and pass on anything you couldn't do at the change of shift. Whether you do everything or not, there must always be something to complain about. The truth is that i'm not starting any blown IVs at 7:15. At that time i should have been rounding up my report and getting ready to leave.Goddluck..

Anybody know a very good gynecologist? Pls help!
Thank you for taking the time to look! I'm not sure if this is a better place to say this but I'm just worried. I'm just asking if anyone knows a good gynecologist i could use. Here's my story. I graduated this year and has been trying to conceive. I have done all i could but to no avail. My son is now 4 and i just need one more child. My husband and I had waited for me to finish school and that is the reason for the long wait. We never ussed any contraceptives except condoms...but i still don't understand it. Pls feel free to private mail me if you know of someone who had similar problem or you have been thru that and scaled thru. Any opinion would be well appreciated! Thank you once again!

Two months orientation. How can i handle family members???
I feel so much intimidated by family members of my patients. Once they find out that i'm new, they start asking me how long i've been working, what does this medicine mean, what does it do, how many mg....I tell them anyways. While some are just merely curious and just want to talk with you, others are just looking for ways of actually putting you down. Question: do i just ignore those looking for trouble or do i just answer their questions in a bid to be good? I feel so intimidated. Last week was my last week of orientation and i had quite a bit. Throughout my orientation it's like i had at least one or two families like that in a month. Bottom line is, pls i need hints on how new grads should handle these kind of family members/friends and even patients who gets them intimidated.Any advise would be appreciated.

Kaplan Readiness Test
Reserve teh question trainer tests 5-7 till the week before your test. Do them and finish all the rationales. You can do one test per day(in the moring and do the review of rationales of missed and correct ones in the evening/night. i found it very helpful. Although high grades are good, but like posted up there, it's not so much about scoring high, it's actually being able to understand it and also know how to walk your way to the right answer. I can attest that two of my classmates didn't even pass both the diagnostic and readiness test but both passed with 75 questions. Be rest assured that you'll pass, just continue doing your questions and know that others had the same thing and still passed.I wish you all the BEST! Goodluck on your nclex!

If you took Kaplan and then took the NCLEX...
Too bad you are haiving a bad time with your Kaplan Instructor but i too took Kaplan and know exactly what you are saying but the picture you're painting on this board about Kaplan isn't good, i must say.... It's true there are different instructors with different methods of teaching but their goal is all the same. You seem to be mixing up all information together. I know I wasn't there but I also know she can't tell you you need 70-75 to pass nclex when the book clearly states at least 65% to pass. i know the online Q bank, they want you to be in those range(70%) or there about, but not with the question trainer. Again telling you to do about 200 questions in a day isn't bad especially if you have little time before your test date, infact, it helps with your endurance afterall nclex is 265. With Kaplan's Q bank you can only select maximum of 50 questions per time. You can decide to do 100-150/day and increase to 200 if you like. But it's totally up to you. In Kaplan class, it can really be annoying and frustrating to both the instructor and the students when some " know it ALLs" want to answer the question without giving others the chance to critically think and walk their way to the answer. We were told to remain silent during the questions and everybody is on the same page and we walk it out together even when we knew the answer. Then you can ask your questions.Of course with every other nclex review, there's always something that you may not agree with. Anyways, I'm JUST tired of seeing your rantings and complaints and felt i should address it. If you don't like the class, I can tell you, you are not compelled to be there by your hospital, you can decide to withdraw if you think you are being fed with something you don't agree with. You can also sit at home and do the same questions online and be happy. As far as i'm concerned, Kaplan IS IT for NCLEX RN! That you are having a bad time with your instructor doesn't mean the course is not good. It's just unfortunate that instructors are all very different and unique. Finally, we should be careful what we say here. People come in here and get supported in one way or the other and of course your complaint may help someone make a good decision but so much "rantings" each and everyday like this can be quite depressing for those currently taking the course. Anyhow, I wish you the very BEST as you prepare for your NCLEX! Goodluck!

Psyching yourself up for the NCLEX
...if you feel you know the content, pls focus more on taking lots of Nclex type questions before your test and be sure to read the rationales of both the missed ones and the ones you got right. It really helped me alot. I graduated in May too, did Kaplan and went in for Nclex and passed with confidence. I knew I passed as the computer shut down after 75 questions. Bottom line, don't follow people's opinion on such thing, ..go with what you think is best for you. That is, don't say because someone studied for 2hrs and went in and passed Nclex and then think it will work ...might not work for you.All the best!

Need Opinions from recent NCLEX takers..........
....honestly, you are the only one that can tell if you are ready or not. I scheduled mine as soon as I got my ATT and right after graduation. I knew i was ready to take it. Having read through the saunders book throughout my last semester and the CD for my hesi exit exam, I didn't have to review much but just went for kaplan. Took the exam right after kaplan and passed with 75 questions. If you've been studying since after graduation and feel pretty ready, it may be nice to schedule the exam before you start your work... The earlier you take it, the better BUT you have to be mentally ready. I took it and thanked my God I scheduled earlier because I don't think long procrastination of scheduling date would have helped me..or too much extra studying..One of my instructors told us that most people she knew that had to wait 3 more months after graduation to take Nclex, never really studied like they planned than if they had taken it like a month or so after graduation.... Oh well, goodluck and all the best!
