Dear Wishful, When nursing school was not in session I did a few hours a week of volunteer work at my local hospital. The work was mostly clerical on a labor and delivery unit. I got to know the nurses, the docs and saw how they worked together. After graduation I applied for an RN med/surg position at that hospital, and got the job. Afterward, the nurse manager told me that the RN's I worked with while volunteering put in a good word about their experience working with me. Volunteering is a great way to learn about a hospital, the people, the work environment, etc. Also, the networking possibilies are extremely valuable! Most hospitals have opportunities for volunteers. I encourage people to call the HR department and see what's available.

Hi, I am in the PAS program and enrolled in CMMC School of Nursing. Check with your local DHHS office. If you are accepted into the program (low income based and no previous degree, etc.) they do cover childcare costs while you attend school. They have certain guidelines you have to meet before you can qualify. The ASPIRE (PAS) program is extremely helpful and I am so very thankful for it! Linda

Hi! I am a currently enrolled at CMMC School of Nursing. In 2006 I applied right before the March 1 deadline, got accepted and began the nursing program that next Sept. They don't have a "waiting list." Your application is considered within the pool of candidates that also apply for that year. If you don't make it, you can apply the next year and may get in. It all depends on the competition in the particular group of applications for any given year. One suggestion- have your general ed courses completed before you get accepted- The workload is huge with just the nursing stuff alone... Also it's been almost 20 years since I graduated high school so don't let age deter you! The Director of Admissions told us the average age of our students is 32. I personally know of an 18 year old and a 56 year old in the nursing program! This school has a great reputation for turning out RN's who know their stuff. Best wishes!
