New Grads in South Carolina
Thanks for the info - LuvMyGamecocks!!!! Good luck to your nursing. It will all be worth it in the long run. Haunted - Where are you originally from? Saw where you were a tiger fan, wondering if you were from Louisiana.... Moved to SC 3 years ago. Love it here other than being so far from family and friends in La, and being away from my tigers.....I can't wait to start in ED. Did my preceptorship there in school and loved it. I haven't been to Charleston yet but heard it's a great city. LuvMyGamecocks---- The interview was great, easy. Everyone was so down to earth. The interview was not bad at all, and everyone was so nice. Orientation is 12 weeks. They rotate you through different areas during the 12 weeks like ED, ICU, etc... But since I am going to ED I will do all my 12 weeks in ED to get more experience. Let me know when you finish, I will give you the nursing recruiter name and number. He was great. My email is [email protected] GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RN job for new graduate in Columbia, SC
Thanks for the advice. I graduated from Alcorn State University, School of Nursing in Natchez, Ms. My husband got transferred to Columbia in 2003 with his job and I had just finished my first year of nursing. We had to move and I was told everything would transfer to Midlands Tech. Needless to say, they would not accept anything, not even pre-nursing. They wanted me to start all over with their program. So I moved back to Louisiana in August 2004 and finished my last year. Actually graduated May 2005. Moved back to Columbia with my husband after graduation. I didn't take the NCLEX until March due to family issues back home. So, I am ready to start work but just doesn't seem to be any jobs hardly avaliable. I was told Providence and Lexington want 1 year of experience. How do they expect us to get experience if they don't hire new graduates. I have never heard of this before. I did apply to Baptist the other day. Well I guess you could say Palmetto Health, it had all 3 hospitals listed under it. Haven't heard anything yet though. I know you can't wait to be finished. I was. That was the most stressful experience I have ever been through. I hope I never go through that again. Also, being away from my husband and only seeing each other every 4-6 weeks for 2 days added stress. Don't know about you, my hair started falling out the last semester, which was the worst, not so bad, just so much to do and not ever enough time to do it, and lost about 60 pounds by the time May got here. Well good luck finishing and congratulations. If I hear from the hospitals will let you know. Thanks again

RN job for new graduate in Columbia, SC
Hi everyone! I just recently received my SC nursing license. I am trying to find a job here in Columbia at one of the hospitals. My problem is, it doesn't seem to be hardly any open positions. One of the hospitals has several openings but all requiring at least one year experience. I was kinda stunned when I ran across this. I feel like I am having a hard time trying to find a nursing job. I didn't think I would have this problem. I was mainly wanting an ER position, but now to the point will take almost anything. If anyone has any suggestions on where to go to find open nursing positions or any advice as to where to apply for a job or any other general advice, please help. Thanks

New nursing graduate - Question about ER
thanks!!!!! since i did my preceptorship in er, i knew then that was the area that i wanted to go into. i had made my mind up then. but when it comes down to getting a job it all starts to become a little confussing on making the right decision. i think by following my heart i can't go wrong. to me, i would be making the wrong mistake by going into an area that i just didn't care for or that my heart wasn't in. i don't want to start my career off by dreading to go to work everyday. thanks for the advice on the traveling also. i was just told that i had to have 1 year to get on. not for sure if that is what i want to do yet. just a future thought. i know the pay is great. but yes, i agreee, by no means am i ready to be thrown out there on my own, even after just 1 year. thanks again!!!!!!!!

New nursing graduate - Question about ER
Thank you for the advice!!!!! I have to agree with you on the thought of going to a med-surg floor. That thought depresses me also. I didn't like it during clinicals. Same thing day after day. I like experiencing different challanges. Guess that's why I came to love ER so much. Also, the fact of treating them and getting them out of there and not as much paperwork. My opinion is: I worked my butt off for too many years to get something I had wanted for so long so why shouldn't I go to the area that interests me the most. I want to do something that I enjoy doing everyday. I know it will be hard at first but I made it through nursing school, I can make it through this. Thanks again,

Question about ER from new nursing graduate
new member and new to web site: have some questions for anyone that can offer some advice. i graduated from nursing school in mississippi in may, 2005. just finished the process of switching my license from ms to sc. i am waiting on my sc license before i can go interview for a job. i know i want to work in er. i did my 3 week preceptorship in er and loved it. never thought i would until then. since then that is the only area that interests me. i have a few fellow classmates that i keep in touch with who after graduation went directly to er and is loving every bit of it. there are a few job openings in the er at the hospital in downtown columbia that i would like to apply for. no experience needed. job description says will hire new rn graduate or rn with experience. my question is do i need to go to med-surg floor first for a few months to get basic skills down or should i go to er because that is where my heart is. my fellow classmates said they had no problem adapting to er. i felt like i adapted well in school during the 3 weeks i was there and my preceptor gave me a great report on how well i did. i just don't want to get the position and then be thrown out to the dogs (if you know what i mean). some have said go to where you want to be but others say go get your basic skills down first before going to a specialized area. i just wanted to be prepared before taking on something. eventually my goal is to get on with a traveling company working er. i have a friend who has her own traveling company out of jackson, ms and was told in order to work er with a traveling company i have to have 1 year experience in er first. so why not go ahead and apply for the er position and get my 1 year over with? if anyone has any advice please let me know. thanks, lsugirl
