GeRmAnY?!
Hi Suzanne!! I'm planning on getting my BSN (hopefully starting a 2nd degree program in the fall) and would also like to move to germany. I'm originally from there and fluent in the language and all of that. I moved to the US about 11 yrs ago when I was 12. Do you know where I'd need to go to find out exactly which steps i'd need to take to work there as a nurse? I don't want to ruin my chances of getting a job if i move back, and I'd just like to know what I've got to look forward to...also looking into england, ireland and austria, since the economy in germany isn't that great...do you know where i'd have to look for these countries as well? any ideas? (I do have german citizenship so I don't need to worry about that one!) I'd like to go as far as the NP eventually...and I don't know how that would translate over there...or I'm also toying with the ideas of Med-school and don't know how my previous school/work experience would play in to that...say, if I decide to go to school for that over there...hope to hear back!!! jeffrey

US Nurses Wishing to Work Overseas
Hi...I am German/American and hoping to start nursing school next year. (I graduated with my BA in 2005, and knew before I finished that it wasn't what I wanted to do...so I'm hopefully starting work on my Pre-reqs to 2nd degree program in the fall) Anyway, I am planning on moving back to Germany (maybe austria/england/ireland) and would love to know what I need to prepare for in order to work there as a nurse. I am also interested in becoming and NP someday and would like to know how that would translate over there...do you happen to know where that other post was located or where I'd be able to find the info I need?? Thanks!!! jmb

what to do if I need pre-reqs?
thanks everyone! I'm thinking a community college would be best because it is much cheaper...unless I get in to the program at NYU. As for the loans...I'm still waiting to hear back from schools. They are not very quick on replying...(sigh)...but I wouldn't mind taking out loans to get my pre-req courses out of the way. Anybody know FOR SURE whether loans are a yes or a no?? The Rochester school seems great...and I'd be done fast...but I'm in NYC and would prefer to stay here. I have a great CHEAP place in Brooklyn and I don't want to lose it.

what to do if I need pre-reqs?
Hi!! I graduated with my BA in 2005. I've since realized what I knew all along...I should have gone in to nursing. I live in Brooklyn and want to go to Nursing school. I need to get a BSN b/c I will eventually move back to Europe. (I have dual-citizenship and have spent all of my life moving from one side of the world to the other! :wink2: ) Anyway...I NEED to go to nursing school ASAP. I am looking at a program at NYU that stretches the program by about a year (total 2.5 yrs plus summer) and lets you get the pre-reqs that way. However, I am worried what I'd do if I don't get in to that program since it's hard to get in to. Where and/or how would I get my pre-reqs, and still get student loans? I didn't (luckily) have many from my first undergrad, plus after this year I will get an AmeriCorps stipend of about 4k to cover school stuff. At a community college to get the pre-reqs that would cover tuition, but not my living. I would be willing to work part-time (or nearly full-time) and go to school...I've done it before, I'll do it again...but I'd like to spend as much time on my studies as possible, and would therefore prefer loans over too much work. I was informed by a school in indiana that if i'm not degree seeking (which i wouldn't be if I'm just taking pre-reqs) then i would not be eligible for ANY loans...no private school loans or ANY KIND OF FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AT ALL...is that true? If so, what other options are there for me to get the loans? I will have NY residency by August...which is when I need to start taking classes.

training for foreigners?
Hmmm...I currently live in the US and am in the process of researching a US nursing degree...I am a dual citizen (Germany/US) and will be relocating back to Europe eventually. Will I have to go back to school to do my training or what would the requirements be if I get an Associates or Bachelors or Nurse Practitioner degree in the US and then relocate? I'm interested in moving to N. or S. Ireland, England or Germany/Austria...anybody know where I'd need to look?? Also...why does it seem like many of the UK and european nurses want to move to America? are conditions not that good?? I have heard the pay is lower for European nurses...but could the higher pay of US nursing careers be that much of a draw to come here? Gracias!!!

Schooling in the USA
hi! i moved to the US from Germany with my family when I was 12 and my sister 13. (younger brothers were 7 and 9) Before we moved we practiced our English, since we lived in Germany. It was tough at first, but we caught on pretty quickly. Science was the toughest at first (mainly because of the language barrier)...the English, History, Math, Geography all came quick though. After the first semester all of us were doing well and in the top of our class. All without additional history or geography studies. And considering you are coming from England, I don't think you'll need to worry...especially not for the younger children. If your oldest does have some trouble with the US History or Geography, you can always find a tutor since college kids or even High School seniors are pretty inexpensive and good ones are easy to find too. Plus, our teachers understood our need, and in the beginning especially were more than willing to give us a little extra attention.
