  1. I cannot believe this is happening. i am a manager of an obstetrical unit in Canada and I could not afford to lose any senior nurses. We don't have the new grads to replace the nurses leaving because of retirement. I agree many managers tend to harp on the negatives and rarely give positive feedback. i am a new manager less than one year and I have worked to people like that and never want to be one. When I have to speak with staff about concerns I always try to tell them that we will work toghether to fix the problems. I am truly sorry for your difficulties because it sounds like a very awful place to work.
  2. We would only obtain the sample and the lab would run the analysis. Yes there was a written exam and 3 witnessed ABG draws. These were witnessed by an RT or nurse educator.
  3. Hi! I work at a facility that has limited RT support. They are on site till 2000H. Nurses in ER and ICU have the transfer of medical function to perform. They also go through out the facility and do them as necessary. I loved doing them, no big deal.
  4. Yes yes yes and yes. I accepted a position as a nursing unit manager for a busy intergrated obstetrical unit. We deliver between 100-130 babies per month. I had 21 years of ER experience. This unit has had 5 different managers in 10 years..... poor morale, etc. It has been 5 month now and I have psoriasis which has been gone for 14 years, neck and arm pain etc. STRESS occurs when people care I am learinging to fret over things that I have control over. We have no control over the nursing shortage it is world wide. We can make things better on our units so nurses want to stay and will recruit for you too. Keep your chin up and keep caring.

Hi Everyone, I am so glad that someone asked this question. I became a nursing unit manager of a busy integrated unit, including antenatal, L&D, postpartum and subspeciality nursery. We live in a city of 35,000 and have 130 deliveries a month. I have no OBS experience and I know I got the job because of my 21 years of ER experience and a very positive attitude. This unit has had 5 different managers in 10 years, all very qualified OBS nurses all of them with negative attitudes. I wanted to acknowledge my nurses on OBS nurses day just like we had in the ER. We need to request that AWhonn delegate a specific day to nurses not just Midwives. Thanks for the great question
