Frontier Bridge vs RN-BSN?
Frontier, Frontier, Frontier. Not having a BSN will be trumped by having an MSN! Small worry. My friends that did bridge are glad they did....it forced them to move and not quit (I've got a BSN already so lemme just call it quits....I'm feeling lazy now) Oh you will love love love Frontier. They will renew your appreciation for what you do! fmwf

Am I too old to become a CNM
Dear oldenurselady, I've been told that people don't get old, clothes do! Do you really think you'll be 50 before you get out of school? Nah. You will be late 40s. Know some great CNMs who started at 50. That is historically how many midwives started....just seasoned! I think you know the answer! Well wishes to yah! Frontier sounds like it could be great for you! (Can we say that here?) I can just see it!

Anyone enter CNM with little to no nursing experience?
I really do appreciate the balance that starryeyed brings to this question that many ask. Some are very adamant about this, I can understand what the emotional value could be for a preceptor who has the task of bringing someone along who has had no L&D (or nursing). However, in our understanding of midwifery and yes nurse-midwifery, L&D culture is decidedly different--an auxiliary to the obstetrics model. Midwifery one the other end of the maternity services spectrum is so much more than intrapartum and childbirth. Cliche, but it is holistic. It is not an elevated L&D nurse or a physician-extender. So much so that in all fairness we could eliminate special folks who have the midwifery trait/calling/goal/bugg from the equation by stipulating that folks have the coveted highly competitive L&D experience. And doing that we forget that we need people who can do a lot more than just the L&D part--like building community programs and approaches, promoting lactation, postpartum, essential caring and education, adolescent services, international health....etc. I really hope that this "must have L&D experience for midwifery school" thing is rethought or at least modified. It can be done. It can think of a few ways to do it. In fact there are advantages to doing this. There are schools that make this possible. I like the idea of putting in your extra work on the midwifery end instead of the L&D end.

Coworker reported me for something I hadn't done = Final warning
"Don't confront her. If you're with her alone she'll probably say you touched her or something. As soon as you find a new job, quit this one. Don't give them two weeks, just quit. Normally I'd never recommend that, but they're obviously looking to fire you, and they don't care what bills you have or how many kids you're supporting." Agreed. You have got to know when to hold em, fold em, walk away & run. It is a lot easier on your psyche when you trump them and go home with a clean slate than have them fire you for either thing this poster mentions. Youve gotta maintain some strength and power in this. Believe us.

Does it matter that the ACNM does not support DNP requirements?
This is the million dollar question. Feedback indicates that CNMs b/f 2015 will be grandfathered in (as long as they meet the 2010 Masters date). There is word out that there could be a DM (Doctor of Midwifery) in the works. The best article I could find is by the ANA. It outlines the issue, but is promoting a "DrNP" (a professional practice and academic research degree) as the solution to the problem. http://cms.nursingworld.org/MainMenuCategories/ANAMarketplace/ANAPeriodicals/OJIN/TableofContents/Volume112006/No1Jan06/ArticlePreviousTopic/tpc28_716031.aspx This is a great controversy that encompasses and challenges graduate and doctoral level programs. My mom used to always say since I was a little girl, "there is a point where more and more education does not result in a better midwife." She has a high school diploma. I think that there are studies that may give some credence to this. I am anticipating more answers to this question this week. fmwf

Any personal experience with Phila U, Georgetown, or Upenn?
Update: I did have my interview for Phila U. on 06/04. It lasted quite a while--as it was thorough. I did learn that this program is designed to specialize in nurturing/mentoring students with "Midwife Tutors" and "Mentors". The program has a goal for facilitating the "cohort" bonding, being connected and communicating with each other. I will say in the last two years that I have been dealing with them, they know me by name, are personable professional and nurturing. And every person that I have had a conversation with (at least 3) were midwives. Moreover they were the first program in the country to offer a Masters in Midwifery.

Dealing with fear
One thing I have learned about performing is to think less (or not) about your self/ego and more about doing the right thing and doing the thing right. And breathe! fmwf

"Hippie" Image
People are dynamic. They do change and "improve". They can also be influenced. By mass media, by market and by you . At the turn of a dime, a woman who has never even heard of a midwife can decide [informed by intuition] that she should be giving birth with a different practitioner than a sensational OB. I believed that midwives were obliterated until about 1996. I was ecstatic to learn otherwise. And I have no children. Plant a seed with objectivity... you just never know. Someone may need a holistic nurse after having a pregnancy managed medical model and remember your words --that there is such a person. They may tell their sister, wife, daughter. Studies show that people may demonstrate openness about midwives discreetly even if they don't know much about them. And information about midwives makes a significant impact on their likelihood to choose one. No need to internalize their reactions because midwives are universal, historical and vital. In otherwords, they are global, around for thousands of years and will always be needed! :loveya:

Dealing with fear
Just wanted to post that moving through fear is the lesson of labor--by extension being "born" as a midwife. Some birthing techniques that address fear have their application for life. One is in the book "Birthing from Within". Some people who are familiar with the Bradley technique find it useful for many life transitions. This is not to be condescending--I understand where you are coming from. Certainly you have accomplishments to draw from--I wish I were an FNP--and not just applying to CNM programs! fmwf
