  1. Yes, I think you are right. My main concern is that I live in a congested urban area, and I am afraid I will sit in traffic for an hour with no compensation for time or mileage. All for a one-hour visit for which I will be paid $30. I believe there is room for negotiation regarding the mileage. I am still figuring out exactly what to ask for, since I have never had a position before that involves driving...

  3. I recently accepted a position as an RN for a company that provides "personal care" for seniors. My job involves driving to their homes to complete an assessment and care plan, and to supervise the CNAs who are providing the care. The job pays $30/hour, but there is no mileage reimbursement. The clock starts when I arrive at their home, and ends when I leave. So I might spend an hour in traffic with no reimbursement for driving or gas. Is this the norm? I have a feeling the employer may be flexible on this if I can present suggestions about what the normal protocol is in other agencies. I really appreciate any feedback!
  4. I have an interview next week with a new start-up company that provides in-home personal care services for the elderly. No skilled nursing. This prn RN position involves creating and updating care plans and supervising the CNAs. It is a 1099 position, which I have never had before, but I understand the main drawback is that I am responsible for paying all taxes. Since I haven't had the interview yet I don't know if the pay is hourly or per-visit. When I filled out the application, I left the "desired pay" section empty since I had absolutely no idea what to put. Does anyone know what the usual pay is for this type of position, either hourly or per-visit? I assume I would have to take into account the fact that I will be paying all the taxes & using my own car. Any feedback is definitely appreciated! Thanks
  5. Thank you! It was very helpful to hear from someone with first ( and second) hand knowledge of what the job is like. I also have an ADN, but I don't have any experience with triage. All my experience has been as a charge nurse in SNF/LTC. The main advantage for me in working as an advice nurse would be that I would be eligible for health benefits even as a part-timer. I am looking for something (anything! ) other than what I have spent the last decade doing. I have been checking into a variety of nursing and non-nursing jobs. I really appreciate your response...thanks.
  6. Two questions: 1. Does anyone have any idea how much a "Patient Registration Rep" position at Inova pays? I am having trouble finding a job, so I am considering applying for this position since it has health benefits. 2. Has anyone ever worked as an Advice Nurse at Kaiser? I see there are a lot of part-time positions available, and I am wondering why... I am curious what the job is like, and whether they hire a lot of part-timers so they can avoid paying benefits. Thanks.
  7. I was there for 8 years, and it was in another state. When I first interviewed for the job there was a nursing shortage, and Nurses could pretty much pick and choose where they wanted to work. How things change!
  8. The issue is that the applications are asking for a salary history. They aren't asking what I would like to make. Trust me, at this point I am really willing to negotiate! Unfortunately, on the online application, there is no room for any comments about being willing to negotiate-- it's just a fill-in-the -blank question about how much I made at my last job. I am wondering if that is why nobody is calling me for an interview... Thanks for your info on how much LTCs are paying. It helps.
  9. Thanks. I also noticed that the Cameron Glen and Commonwealth facilities suddenly stopped listing positions on the Inova website. One day there were positions listed...the next day, nothing. Makes me wonder what's going on with the sale of those two facilities. Kind of hard to fathom that they were hurting for nurses one day and then fully staffed the next!
  10. I've been looking for a job for over a month now, and still nothing. I've only been called for one interview, and I am trying to figure out why. I am looking for a job in LTC, and have several years of experience as an RN in that field. I've submitted online applications at a bunch of places, and haven't heard back from them. Is it because I am from out of state, and all my experience is from other states? Is it because my experience is in LTC as opposed to sub-acute? Is it because my prior hourly rate ($33)-- which they ask for in the applications--is too high? I've been checking the ads on Craigslist and Indeed, as well as whatever individual facility websites I can find. Is there anywhere else I can be looking? Any feedback would be welcome. I am really starting to get worried about this situation.

  12. I am looking at job listings, and I see that Manor Care has several openings for "RN Nurse Supervisor." Does anyone know whether this is just ManorCare-ese for plain 'ole charge nurse/floor nurse, or if it is a bonafide supervisory position (i.e. supervising nurses and not being assigned to a particular unit.) It also seems like Manor Care mainly focuses on subacute now, as opposed to a SNF/LTC combo which I am used to. Is this correct? I am looking for any info from people who are familiar with Manor Care. I have searched and read all the previous threads that have mentioned Manor Care...I am looking for more recent info. Anyone work there?? Thanks.

  14. I've heard that Inova is in the process of selling two nursing homes--Cameron Glen and Commonwealth--to another company. I am interested in applying to these places, but I am wondering who is buying them (i.e is it Manor Care? ) Does anyone know? You can PM me if you don't feel like posting in the thread... Thanks.

  16. Well, I am moving to Arlington (from Hawaii) this Saturday, the 24th. Naturally, I am nervous about finding a job. I have many years of experience in LTC/ICFs as an RN. I was looking at the Inova webite for possible job openings, and see that they have several LTC/ICFs in Northern Virginia. Does anyone have any firsthand knowledge of which places would be the best to apply to? Or any other suggestions? (You can send me a PM if feel like it!) Also, what constitutes an RNII ? I am not familiar with the numbering classification for RNs. And my third question: Virtually all of my scrub tops have a bright Hawaiian print--will this be OK to wear in Virginia, or do I need to run out and get some scrubs that are more plain? Seriously...
  17. Thanks for the words of encouragement everyone! I really appreciate the feedback. I will most likely seek a job in LTC since that's where all my experience has been. The patient load is pretty heavy where I am right now--I have 41 residents on the 3-11 shift. I am hoping to find something a bit lighter, though. I was also thinking about assisted living, but I don't really know whether assisted living places hire RN's, and what it involves. I wouldn't feel comfortable in acute care, since my skill set matches LTC rather than acute. I am great at time management!
  18. I've been an RN at the same SNF/LTC for 8 years, so I am pretty much out of the loop regarding interview protocol these days. I am relocating to a new state, and I am kind of nervous about finding a new job...and the whole interview process. A few questions: 1. Do most facilities want a resume, or is it more common to fill out an application? (either in person or online) 2. What about letters of reference? Still used, or is it acceptable to just give names and phone numbers for references? 3. I don't have 3 work references, since I have been at my job for so long. A problem...or not? I am also kind of nervous because I am in my early 50's. How big a factor do you think that will be in terms of finding a new job in a SNF/LTC setting? I appreciate any feedback/advice anyone can give...thanks. :)
  19. The DON is from a foreign country. When there is a job opening--either for a nurse or a nursing assistant--she fills the position by word-of-mouth, rather than by advertising the position. According to the EEOC, if hiring by word-of-mouth results in a majority of employees being of any one ethnicity, it is a violation. Since she has been doing this for years, approximately 90% of the employees in the nursing department are from the same country as the DON. Someone finally blew the whistle on the facility and filed an EEOC complaint. It's a shame and an embarrassment for the facility that it will take intervention by the federal government to stop her illegal behavior.
  20. Not sure where you are getting your information, but I have to question the accuracy of your comments. Hospitals facing budgetary constraints would be less likely to petition foreign nurses, regardless of their level of experience. There are additional costs involved that would not be present when hiring a US candidate. And with the level of unemployment in the US, it certainly makes more sense to invest in US-trained nurses--it's better for the US economy as a whole. And as to your statement "If a foreign new grad has certain connections..." I'd like some clarification. Preferential hiring based on ethnicity is an EEOC violation. It may be OK in some foreign countries, but in the US it is illegal. In fact, the facility I currently work at is facing an EEOC complaint because they preferentially hire too many foreign nurses from one particular country (because the DON is also from that country!) Can't wait to see how it turns out...
  21. My nursing home completely ignores Nurses Week. Instead, they celebrate Nursing Home Week, which really irks me every year. I have never worked in a facility that totally ignored Nurses Week. Every year, hospitals take out full-page ads in the newspapers thanking their nurses, but we don't even get a verbal "thank you."
  22. Wow...that's a lot, with only 2 CNA's. I thought my place was bad, with 41 residents and 4 CNA's... No wonder you cn't get everything done!
  23. Thanks. I'm not exactly sure what Inova is--> from their website, it looks like they pretty much run the gamut from hospitals and rehab to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Would you say that's accurate? I would be looking for a position in a SNF/LTC facility, since that's where my experience lies, so I will check them out once I move in July (if they have any appropriate positions open...)
  24. Just curious whether it is common for part-time nursing jobs to offer health insurance in Virginia. In my current state, all people who work >20 hours/week are entitled to health benefits. I am wondering whether any companies in VA offer the same. Thanks.
  25. Interesting. I have 41 residents, 1 nurse (me) and 4 CNAs. No wonder I'm so stressed... ...I need another nurse!
