  1. I'm 25 and in a one-yr ABSN program, and I am for sure one of the younger ones in my class. Most people are in their 30's or 40's and are married with kids and have tons of work experience. I completely understand the 1/4life crisis thing and sometimes wish I had my career and all right on track. BUt now that I think about it, I don't regret that I spent 4 years pursuing a degree that I'll never use, and had I known I wanted to be a nurse right out of high school, I definitely was not mature enough to handle it at 18 years old . Heck sometimes I still think I'm not mature enough:nurse: So, definitely follow your heart and go for it!
  2. I was a volunteer at a children's hospital. My job was to bring books and movies around. So I did have patient contact, just not in a patient-care sort of way. The only time I ever felt like I was in the way was when I visited the PICU, where everyone is busy and stressed and has no time for books and movies anyway. Even though I wasn't doing anything nurse-wise, it was an excellent opportunity to take in the hospital environment. I also learned the value of knocking on doors, washing hands and wearing face masks before walking into immunocompromised patients' rooms. All in all, it was a good experience and I did feel appreciated. And I got accepted into all nursing schools I applied to, so it must have had some value (:

I've worked in derm for a few years (admin, but soon to be in nursing school!) and here are some other considerations about accutane- First of all it is a huge committment. YOu have to follow up with the doc alot, get your blood tests and pregnancy tests. In addition, they now have this whole I-Pledge system to promote contraceptive use and it's been kind of pain for patients as well as the prescribing docs. Not only is it a lot of paperwork, you have to log on to some website and participate in their accutane education tutorial. There's a lot of legal issues surrounding accutane, at least in my office women of child bearing age sign a contract to use two forms of contraception, and consent to abortion if pregnancy occurs. As far as the treatment itself, the drug is pretty harsh and stays in your system for 6 months after, I think it dries up your skin and makes it very sensitive (esp photosensitive) so you can't get facials or wax or do anything like that. However, I know a lot of people who have benefitted greatly from it, especially when they tried everything else (topicals, antibiotics, etc) and nothing worked, and if they had really bad cystic acne (the kind that leaves pitted scars).
  4. Ok so I am starting to freak out about finishing those two classes...I am still waiting to take my midterm in Patho, and my 2nd midterm in Pharm. Meanwhile, I'm trying to get ahead in assignments while I wait. AHAHAHHHH anyone else as much of a procrastinator as I am? :uhoh3:
  5. The audio lecture sound quality is crappy, plus some of those lectures are way too long...
  6. hello and congrats, I'm SF campus too!! I am currently doing UIowa Patho (just turned in exam1 request...I am SO behind!!) and IndianaU Pharm (almost ready for the 2nd midterm). Yeah, I totally procrastinated and sometimes I panic for a moment thinking what happens if I can't finish all this in time!! Does anyone know yet exactly where the SF campus is or are they still keeping it under wraps???
  7. Tell me about it. I'm now on my last prereq after two years, I'll be glad to start (and finish!) either of the programs I've been accepted to. Thanks for your help!
  8. Hi everyone! I'm a future nurse who will be attending school this summer/fall. I was wondering about how long it takes to actually start working once you have completed nursing school. Do most grads take the NCLEX right away, or do you need to spend a couple weeks/months studying (obviously there's variation in this). Also, say you have a job lined up- how long does it take to get NCLEX results and all the paperwork done before you can start working? One of my goals is to start working as a nurse as soon as I can, right now I am deciding between two ABSN programs, one which will allow me to finish 6months earlier than the other one. Thanks for your help!!
  9. I celebrated by dropping the prereqs that I no longer need for the BSN programs at the bottom of my list!
  10. Thanks for giving me the heads up, I got my admission letter today for the ABSN (:
  11. Congratulations!!! I got my email from Duke too!! It's between that and another ABSN program in California (which is where I live), so maybe I'll see you in August!! Are you a local? I wonder if a lot of students come from out of state to attend DUSON. -arianne :roll
