Would you pick the hospital medsurg job or the subacute rehab job?
This is 7 years later here I am replying to this but I think it would help future new grads. I've been a nurse now for 6 years. I made the same mistake as the poster and worked at a subacute center for various/life reasons. I also didn't feel fully ready as a new nurse to work in a hospital when I first graduated. I opted to take less stressful/less bullying jobs first so I could get the hang of the nurse flow if you will, and some skills, so that way no one had a reason to bully me at any hospital! (Since that's where bullying happens the most, especially to new grads ?). That scared me and I didn't want to walk right into that. Considering all of that, now looking back, I wish I did put myself in to the Hospital as a new grad. Reason being, a FEW may be more snobby/bullies but as a whole, people work with you better and are understanding of your newness. Also, the time will fly, and all the sudden you'll find yourself with a years experience of ACUTE care. Even though I've been a nurse for 6 years, it's harder for me to get accepted/get chosen last for any acute position. One year of Acute care unfortunately beats 6 years of Subacute care (☹️) and I didn't know that at the time of being a baby nurse. I just did whatever I thought was best and safest for me at the time. I think that if bullying wasn't an issue, and if there were more opportunities for residency programs for non-newby nurses, we'd have more experienced nurses in hospitals, and perhaps more nurses not quitting as a whole. And we need every nurse we can get. If I were this poster, I would move homes just to take the hospital job, because after her one year she'll realize how much harder it will be to get any acute job no longer a New Grad nurse. Take that Hospital job right out of school, you'll make it. You'll survive, and you'll be able to use your bully experiences to help others later down the road. It won't kill you, but not being able to be as hire-able later in your career will. Take the Hospital job new grads!! Xo

You're Right, It Is You: How do I get out of this career please?
Have you ever thought of opening your own laser-hair removal and or beauty spa? That would make well over 80k and it’s extremely easy! Once you get over the business hump of course. I live near Motecito so I’m lucky I guess, in that I live around the right clientele (people with money who are vain as well, perfect LOL). I have been a school nurse as well and btw it only pays less because you work way less hours and have summers off. Isn’t that what you wanted? I personally didn’t like school nursing but it would probably do well for you considering you want a less abusive environment and more time for your kids. Regarding Nursing Education, imo there’s nothing wrong with telling nursing students how horrible the field is that they’re entering because it can be horrible at times both singularly and as a whole. I wish my instructors told me what I was in for and nobody did. I’d say it’s an option if you like the subject matter (textbook theory of nursing). Most of the time, physically being a nurse does not fulfill me, but I love the subject matter (physiology etc). And that part does fulfill me, in that I have a passion for it. It may take more of your time away from your kids prepping for classes but it also pays more. 4) Have you ever considered Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Psych Nursing can be generally less stressful, the pay is there, school takes only a year and you can work per diem if you want. The 4 schools that offer one-year schooling are UC Davis, UCSF, UCLA AND UC Irvine. You can do it all online and Skype basically for the clinical portion. You never once have to go on campus. You can also try Certified Wound Nursing. Super low stress and in-demand. That is the most “regular-job” type job you can find in nursing imo. Work 8hr shifts, no one is dying. Perfect. Those are 5 options within nursing. Jobs outside of nursing is a whole other ball park I would have to know you better, hand you some aptitude and personality tests to feel comfortable rambling off random career choices. I have taken the Johnson-OConnor, Meyers Briggs tests myself and they are worth the time and money. You’d be surprised at the number of certification fields out there that require minimal schooling. Wish you the best.

Nurses That Never Worked In A Hospital...
Hospitals are not for the weak that’s for sure! Ha, SIKE, SNFs are not for the weak, hospice, isn’t, Urgent Cares aren’t.. If you’re so insecure to think you need to work at a hospital to feel good about yourself than so be it. The truth is, each place has their own crazy, their own downfalls and difficulties. Everyone’s different. Some can handle death than others, some can handle trauma more than others. Some can handle more patients/less acuity than others. Unlike most, I rather have fewer patients with higher acuity. Most rather have more patients (up to 2500 and more as a school nurse for example working 5 schools, given less acuity-although not necessarily-emergencies can happen anywhere at any time). The point is, we are not all the same fish who want to or have better capabilities swimming in the same water. We are different fish better equipped to swim in different waters. Which leads me to conclude that no place is better than another as a whole but only better or worse for you, the one and only person you should worry about. Liz, RN
