Hi, I have a question, I asked a few other people (nurse and pharmacist) but they all told me the same general answer. My pt. was admitted with c/o chest pain he calls it "chest pressure". He is going for a cardiac cath on Monday. The cardiologist put an order in for D5 in water with 8.45% sodium bicarb. at 150 ml/hour to start on Sunday night, the night before his Cardiac cath. What is the logic for this? I know it's to fix metabolic acidocis. His labs are not acidotic. and that's the answer everyone keeps saying..."oh it's to fix metabolic acidosis". I can't figure it out. Can anyone please help me figure this out? He really doesn't have much of a significant history.. arthritis, back pain... Thanks so much!

sorry to say...I don't think I'd be a nurse for $11 and hour. I would make $11/hr babysitting. I just recently got married, and I live in the NE and there is no way I'd be able to keep up w/all my bills at $11/hr. Right now I'm making $27 and I'm a fairly new grad (May) Don't get me wrong I love nursing....but....

what really bothers me, and freaks me out is having to go in and give these little old frail, cachetic, woman their flu shots. Ahh! I feel like I'm going to punch the needle right thru them and out through the other side! I seriously get sick to my stomach just thinking about it. Oh well. Can't get out of it though!

I would love to have 6 months...but I'm on a Med/Surg floor so I get 6 weeks. They said after 6 weeks, if I still feel like I need some supervision I could get maybe up to 2 extra weeks. I think I might like that actually, I still don't feel ready and I'm on my fourth week. Yikes!

haha. this is a very interesting thread. I haven't even started my new job yet, but when I was still doing clinicals I would have nightmares all the time about running extremely late, and when I showed up everything was in complete chaos. I had way too many patients, and I couldn't catch up no matter how hard I tried. Then I would give the wrong meds to the wrong patients..and it just keeps going. It was awful!! I hope I never have a REAL shift like that!

My embarrassing moment.... well I was still in nursing school...and in the med room and there were like 4 different nurses, my instructor and a fellow student. One of my patients needed Heparin, so I got out my carpujet and tried to put air into the vial of Heparin. Before I knew what was happening the whole carpujet vial of Heparin blew up sending the cork at the end of the vial flying across the room, and glass and Heparin all over the floor. Everyone turned and looked at me How embarrassing!

Thanks for reading this: I graduated nursing school in may, took boards in july and passed. I was working up at a camp over the summer as a counselor and would cover Thursday/Fridays' for the camp nurse, so I haven't had time until now to search for a nursing job. I am currently looking and I don't know where to start. I liked Pysch the most, b/c it wasn't like your typical m/s floor, and I surprisingly enjoyed it. I've applied to a couple of behavioral hospitals, but haven't heard anything as of yet. I had my first interview yesterday by a long term care facility, and they offered me a job on their skilled nursing floor. They were all very nice, and it seemed like a nice,clean facility...but will I get experience? I need advice....as a new grad and new nurse I'm SCARED to death to go to m/s I DID NOT enjoy m/s rotations at all. I always felt anxious before every clinical. I don't want to end up hating nursing, as I see so many m/s nurses feeling. However, I want experience b/c eventually I do want to do camp nursing. Do you think that a skilled nursing floor in a LTC facility would provide me with experience? What area should I look for a job? I am applying for m/s positions..but as I said I just really don't want to do it. Everyone's said, "Do what you love" but how do I know that if I go into Pysch or something that's not your typical m/s that I will end up not liking it, and then I'll be left with no remembrance of any skills that I picked up in nursing school. :uhoh21: I don't know...I am just so confused about what to do...I would LOVE anyone's experienced opinion!!
