I know I'm over-analyzing this, but maybe it's a good sign that it said to check back tomorrow rather than "waiting list" or something else. Good for you for ECU! DNP program, yes? Congrats!

question about documentation
Yes, I would tell your nurse educator and manager of the floor you work on before she does. It would sound better hearing it from your first.

Patients in Peds being a guy.
At the hospital I work at, we work three 12-hour shifts per week and they're not always consecutive. So, they try to put us with the same patient if we are working consecutive days, but it doesn't always work out that way. Patient turnover can be pretty quick, or we can have apatite not for a week or more. Feel free to email me at dcorbinrn (at) gmail (dot) com if you have more questions. :)

Are men not as neat as women nurses?
I think if it was the other way around and a male instructor had made a comment about women, it would be a huge deal. Lucky for them most men don't care. The only reason it bothers me is that it's a double standard. I, for one, try to be very neat and if you ask all the female nurses I work with they'll tell you I have the neatest handwriting on the unit and that my patient information white boards are always perfectly done (just one example).

Male Nurse Hair Styles
If you were accepted into nursing school with that hair and it doesn't violate the dress code, then I don't see a problem with it. I'm just going to throw this out there though: Nursing has come a long way in the past several years and nursing has worked hard to get the respect and professional status that it has today. I personally like your hair (in the picture), but if your nursing program or future employer doesn't think it reflects a professional image, you may need to change it. I don't forsee that happening though. Good luck to you!

Stethoscope covers OK for men?
There are no rules (aside from maybe dress code). It really is up to what YOU like, not what others like :) I personally don't like stethoscope covers, but does that make me more manly? I don't think so.

nursing to medicine, is that possible?
Truly and honestly, past acedemic performance is a good indicator of future acedemic performance. While this is not always true and people overcome acedemic struggles, it's important for you to know and to know that medical school is going to be the MOST difficult thing you've ever done. Nursing school would probably be the second most difficult thing you've ever done. I'm honestly being sincere and not mean when I say this, but do you know if you'll get accepted into nursing school with your past acedemic performance of a 50% on a final exam? I would talk to the acedemic counselors at some schools that you're thinking about attending to see if they can do a transcript evaluation for you. Nursing school and college in general is a WHOLE lot harder than high school, so you're going to have to start getting serious and work really hard on your general education prerequisite classes. Pay particular attention in math and science classes and definitely pay attention in your English classes as you'll probably be writing a lot of papers in college and probably in nursing school too. With all that said, nursing school is most likely going to either be a waste of time and not prepare you for medical school (the method of training is completely different and you'll still be lacking many prerequisites required for application to medical school) or you'll absolutely love nursing and won't want to do medical school. Nursing and medicine are too drastically different to compare.

Guys in Peds??
I am a male and I am also a pediatric nurse and I LOVE it! Whenever someone asks me where I work I proudly tell them I work in the Pediatric ICU! I did 4 years of adult med-surg before I went into PICU and, while I feel the experience was invaluable, I don't think it is a necessary prerequisite for becoming a pediatric nurse.

Patients in Peds being a guy.
Hi! I am a pediatric nurse in a PICU and also a male. I have equal amounts of patients who are females and males. I have not seen any difference in staffing except when sexual abuse is suspected in the patient or the patient has a history of it. This is not due to incompetencies in the male nurse, but rather the comfort level of the patient who may have been in a traumatic experience who may not want a male to see her naked or vulnurable. I am ok with that and prefer not to take care of girls and young women who may be uncomfortable with that. That being said, it doesn't happen very often and I take care of just as many 17 year old girls as I do 12 year old boys. I do notice myself inserting Foleys in all the teenage boys though hahaha (again this is because the patient's comfort level as he may not want a young female nurse seeing his member). I'm happy to answer any questions you have anytime. Feel free to PM me anytime you have any questions about male nurses in pediatrics. Take Care, Daniel

How would you manage this?
Not enough information given to make a determination of what I would do.

Males in Pediatrics :) Thoughts?
Hi Hayden! I am Daniel and I am an RN and I work in a PICU. I also float to the pediatric floor and to the NICU (step-down/MNUR). I LOVE working in pediatrics and wouldn't trade it for anything! I am the first and only male nurse in the PICU at my hospital and I think the teenage guys like for me to put their Foleys in, moreso than the female nurses...lol. But whenever I have teenage girls, I let the ladies handle the more "revealing" things, not because it makes me uncomfortable, but because it may make them uncomfortable and I wouldn't want that. If the patient doesn't mind or are sedated, for example, I ALWAYS make sure there is a female CNA or nurse in the room with me whenever I'm doing anything personal (that goes for adults too, thought just to protect yourself legally). Some people would disagree with that saying that it is professional nursing and it shouldn't matter, but I would rather be safe than end up in court with false accusations and my nursing license (which I worked VERY hard for) in jeapardy. On to other things: I have developed some relationships with patients and families that have extended past the inpatient setting. I did adult med/surg for 4 years before coming to pediatrics, but like you, I always knew I wanted to do pediatrics. I do NOT like working in the NICU, partly because it's a different unit with unfamiliar people and partly because babies who don't eat well and there's no parent there to feed them...haha. I know, I know...I should like it being a pediatric nurse, but everyone has patients who they prefer and those who they don't prefer and for me it is the tiny babies who can't keep a paci in their mouth. I love them and give excellent care to them, but it's just not my fav. The PICU that I work at does accept new grad positions, but they are very limited. I work in Raleigh, NC. As far as getting my job, I don't think being a male hindered it at all - it may have helped me get the job since the PICU I work at did not have any male nurses at the time. Good luck in your career and best wishes to you. PM me any time you have any questions or whatnot. I'm always happy to help :) Thanks, Daniel

Pain Management in NUSS/Pectus Repair
Hello! I work in pediatrics and our surgeons currently place pt's on a Morphine PCA and then POD#1 transition to PO analgesics with Oxycontin BID and Norco 1-2 tabs Q4H PRN. However, the surgeons expect the nurses to administer the pain medications ATC regardless if the pt is sleeping. It is against our hospital policy to administer PRN medications without any indication to do so (signs of pain/pt reported pain). I suggested them to schedule the Norco for POD#1 and re-evaluate the pt's pain after that to determine if it's time to go PRN, but they said that they couldn't do that because some pts will require 1 tab while others will require 2 and some can go 6 hrs without pain medication, etc. So then I suggested them ordering Norco 1 tab Q4H scheduled with Norco 1 tab Q4H PRN. That way we could adequately control their pain while not administering PRN medications by proxy (against hospital policy). Question: What do your hospitals do with post-op NUSS procedures or other procedures? TIA!

North Carolina FELS Program Scholarship for DNP (ECU)
Hi! I am looking at starting a DNP program for FNP next year and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the FELS program offered through CFNC.org. Any feedback would be helpful! Also, the college I am looking at attending is East Carolina University College of Nursing. Does anyone have any inside info on their DNP program? Thank you!

Cheap online MSN / FNP programs
If anyone lives within reasonable driving distance to University of North Carolina at Wilmington, MSN-FNP tuition and fees is about $15,000 (according to what I can tell from the website; I've requested exact program tuition/fees and will update if needed) and it's mostly only. The website says about 4 visits to the campus per semester. I hope to apply next Spring for Fall 2015 admission and I live about 2 hours away. It's hard to beat that price!

UNCW Family Nurse Practitioner Program
Is there anyone who is in this program or who has a lot of information about it? I have contacted someone in the nursing department at the University of NC at Wilmington and she just directed me to the website (which I already saw). I'm interested in specifics like: What is the actual cost of attendance (uniforms, extra FNP fees, etc.)?; Is the course primarily online (if so, how often do you have to go to campus?)?; and just all the details. Do you like your classes/professors? If anyone has any inside info, it'd be greatly appreciated! Thanks a bunch!

News Media Used a Photo of Me
I'm not sure this can be answered here but I didn't know where else to post it. Maybe you know someone who can answer or know where I can find the answer. I am an RN and a family member asked of they could take my picture to remember me by. I agreed and posed with the patient. A few days later, someone told me they saw me on the news. A local station had done a story on my patient and they used the picture of me with the patient without permission. There's no confidentiality breach or anything because it was the family who gave the media the picture, but this story has the potential to go national or international and I just am not sure about my picture floating around. Can I legally ask them to take it down or at least blur my face? Is there anything I can do? Thanks!
