  1. Anyone attending Maryville University currently or more recently than this last post in 2019? I'm preparing to start my RN to BSN in May full time then hopefully good enough GPA to immediately start the PMHNP program full time. I cut my hrs at work to roughly 3 shifts per month so I can attend there full time. Any pro's as well as cons? I considered Walden but they are pricey and I've heard they are sometimes referred to as a diploma mill. I researched other online universities as well but since I live close to MVU, that was one of my deciding factors also.
  2. OK, thank you, then a lot like RN clinicals. I know they told me the preceptorship would be in conjunction with whatever my coursework was, like my pediatric course would be taken alongside peds clinicals/preceptor. Peds is what I'm most worried about; its not my favorite, at least it wasn't in RN school. However, my own son has been diagnosed ADHD/spectrum since age 6 and so I've been through all that including ODD and he is now 15 with dx of mild mood disorder as well so we have been through so much with him so hopefully I can draw on my experience with him to I guess reassure myself somewhat. Sorry to ramble; just thinking out loud. . But thank you for your response.
  3. Hi. May I ask what the responsibilities expected of students in preceptorships for psych NP are? Are we shadowing or actually offering our opinions for prescribing/treating, etc? Are we ever on the floor in capacity of nurse or strictly NP? (I'm curious as to safety reasons) Any advice appreciated!
  4. Hi. I'm also interested in PMHNP and I selected Maryville University in St. Louis, MO, after doing several months' research and talking to 5 other schools. I live in MO but tuition is the same. Approx $40k but that includes finishing up my BSN before applying to the MSN/PMHNP program. I'm not the primary breadwinner in my family; my husband makes well over 6 figures so some of my costs will come from student loans and out of my own pocket. I went to PRN at my current job and only work 3 shifts per MONTH. So I can attend school full-time and graduate a little sooner. I can tell you that the 5 schools I interviewed, most of them said I was responsible for securing my own preceptors; it seems commonplace with the online schools. If you live near their B&M campuses, though, then they do seem to help more with finding you what you need to meet their requirements. Maryville has a team that will help me scope out and send necessary paperwork and records/permissions to help me secure my preceptors, but it is ultimately my responsibility. However, I've already spoken to medical directors at a couple clinics and hospitals and they stated they have been preceptors for others and to just come talk to them closer to time to start my clinicals. In my state, I am unable to start a private practice; I'm required to always work under a physician, so which school I attend does not matter so much to me for prestige. I chose Maryville ultimately because they have a 97% first time board taker pass rate. And the cost was a bit less than other colleges I spoke with. And I can travel to their B&M and actually attend my graduation ceremonies. It will only take 4 hours to drive there. They do also require more clinical hours than most of the others but I actually prefer that; I'm a very hands-on learner so I liked that I would have more time out in the field, so to speak, to see many varied conditions/illnesses and get as much experience as possible. So there is my 2 cents. The factors I considered when choosing my university. Best of luck to both you and me! ?
  5. Thanks so much for posting this question. I've not been in any type of school since graduating back in the mid "90's with my associate's degree RN. I want to hopefully become a PMHNP within the next 2 years; I need to finish up my BSN then hopefully my GPA will be high enough to go straight into the PMHNP program. Thankfully my husband makes a very good salary, so I cut way back at my facility to PRN/30 hrs max per month to devote most of my time to schooling. The first semester I decided to just take one course to ease myself into online learning as I have only ever attended B&M schools and to assess my learning style and get used to the technology also. My hope is to be able to handle the full-time student classes which, at the university I've been accepted to, is 2 classes per semester instead of 1. We did make some budget tweaks in general as some of my costs will be covered by student loans yet some will be out of my own pocket. We cut a lot of extras completely from our budget and consolidated some personal debt. My point to the OP is to do your due diligence and not bite off more than you can chew. If your finances dictate you must work full-time, then only attend part-time school. And hopefully your university offers online tutoring to help you through any rough patches you encounter in your courses. I know I struggle the most with test taking (timed tests) so I need to be very focused and know the subject material forwards and backwards so I plan to devote as much time as possible to studying. But any extra resources my school offers, I plan to utilize. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses from prior education/colleges really helps. It does make me a bit nervous knowing I will be prescribing medications for people so I need any extra time I have to devote to learning all I can, not just in coursework, but in clinicals too. I'm already feeling out potential hospitals and clinics for preceptorships. I'm trying not to put my cart before my horse, but I want to be successful with planning and not waiting until the last minute for everything. At times, in RN school, I would get very bogged down in small stuff and miss the bigger picture. Anyway, much luck to you and I always say, where there's a will there's a way and if you want it bad enough and know in your very being that this is what you are meant to do, you will do it and be successful. Peace and blessings.
  6. Mallory which college are you starting at? I'm also starting May 8 at Maryville University.
  7. Hi. I'm getting ready to start the PMHNP program at Maryville University and wondered if anyone else here is also? Or, if anyone is currently in the program or a soon to be new grad from the program. How is it going for you? Do you have any advice for me or tips moving through the program/classes/preceptorships? (I'm currently a part time psych RN in long term care, will be attending full-time schooling, starting in May)
  8. Hi. Have you ever worked in a facility with a lot of staff that are verbally abusive to their patients and the higher-ups do nothing? I feel each abuser should be on an EDL list but the higher-ups held accountable too. Any advice for me? (I’m just a part time staff nurse)
  9. OK, this is something gross about me and a patient’s poop. I worked in long-term care in the beginning of my career and this one elderly patient was bed-bound and incontinent. If I was working and he had pooped the aids would call me. I loved the smell of his poop, it smelled like scalloped potatoes. I often took a potato to work with me to bake in the microwave in case I cleaned him up which made me crave a potato. Another more recent story. A morbidly obese psych patient urinated on the floor as she was attempting to transfer herself to her wheelchair and started to slide in it. We all know how much charting comes with falls, so I let her sit on my thigh/knee while I called for help. She began to urinate again, all over my shoe. I had a couple hrs left until I would be off and couldn’t leave so tried to clean out my shoe best I could but until I was able to go home I had to walk around with her urine squooshing up between my toes every step I took.
  10. I'm trying to help someone with an abbreviations quiz. What is the abbreviation for 'above the knee'. It does NOT say 'amputation'. Is it just 'AK'?
