I started at Newton Memorial as a new grad in 2007 I previously worked there as a Nurses assistant and then a unit Sec. When I started as a nurse I started at 26.00 an hour. I did the research and that starting salary at the time was within the starting salary for all Hospitals in the area. I continue to work there per diem at this time. I specialized and that is why I moved to another facility. I love working at Newton, because the Nurses are willing to take you under their wing and teach you all they know. Great hospital to learn strong clinical skills. There are exceptional nurses that will even go out of their way to be great mentors. Nurse ratios during the day 1-:4-5 and at night 1: 5-6 on occasion ratios can go higher if nurses call out. Those ratios are for Oncology Med floor and Med Surg floor. I do not know the ratio for telemetry. I noticed recently nursing staff has been good no holes in staffing. At this time a Union is trying to get into the hospital so everyone more or less focused on that.

I graduated Nursing School with my BSN at the age of 52. I now work on a very busy Med Surg/Onc floor. I am loving my new career and find that I am able to keep up with the best of them. It has been a very rewarding path I have walked. Although there were some very very trying and heartbreaking times, I endured getting through Nursing School. I have to say today, It was well worth it. If it is in you heart do it anyway.

I too graduated from there in May of 2006. I have to agree with lucylumps just do your best. The Nursing chair is always willing to talk with you. As for the instructors, from what I have read on this website are typical instructors some are really great and some are not.

I really do not post on these forums, but your story has moved me greatly. Please know that I am praying for you. I think you have recieved excellent advice in regards to going to your local paper. Places of business really do care more about their image then about the very people that create that image. Even if it is a Catholic organization. Again, I am so sorry you had to endure what you have but remember that God will always be there for you and loves you very much. I had the same experience during my first year of Nursing my instructor stated I too thought to much like I Nursing assistant and she down graded me for that. Further on in Nursing school I was told I was to nice and had points taken off for that. Today I am a RN praised and rewarded for my compassion.

I started Nursing School at age 45 started out as Bio major then switch to Nursing graduated in May with BSN. I wil be 53 in October. It has been a dream since I was 12 years old to be a nurse I have finally accomplished it. The people I attended school with just took me under there wings thank God.

I am very happy for this forum. I just passed the NCLEX last week and will be starting a new job in February. I am very excited but very nervous at the same time. It is very refreshing to see others feel the same as I do.
