  1. Ok- first things first- do NOT make any big decisions in times of strong emotions. Second- if it’s at all possible, learn and grow from this experience. Unfortunately, many MANY nurses are struggling right now because their respective programs know the holidays are a time that their participants struggle with and often fail at abstinence. They then schedule their ‘randoms’ during these times. (4th of July, your birthday, Memorial Day, etc also being times they prefer to test.)
  2. JadedCPN, there's no need to debate this person. Maybe someday they will have the unfortunate opportunity to have their mind changed. Strange to say I hope they don't have to be in that position. However, it's pretty evident there's no budging here, and to keep arguing is wasted effort.
  3. I am not here to argue whether it is a choice or not. And I don't think anyone agrees that a nurse should be allowed to work impaired. I am simply stating that 'junkie' is not the most appropriate term for those struggling with addiction. If what you say in public could make a potential recipient feel worse, judged, or criticized without reason, it's best not said at all. That's not a law of course, just an ethics thing.
  4. Junkie is a terrible term. And nurses are just as susceptible to self medicating than anyone else.
  5. You'll know. It's instinct. You'll know when to send them. If it's urgent enough you send them, then get the doctor's order. But trust yourself!
