Momma and I
UPDATE Since my mom's fall 6 years ago I watched her health decline. She was always in pain and tired. In February 2025 I called my mom which is a normal routine before I go to work and she did not answer the phone I called a few more times and still no answer so I went over to her house knocked on the door no answer I called her through the crack in the door and put my ear to it she was in the floor again I called my brother since he had a key but he was in some meetings and the key was at his house I called the apartment complex so that I could get a key I told my mom to hang on someone was coming to let me in a good hour went by before I got into the house. I went in her room where I found her on the floor next to her bed again. I asked her if she was okay and what happened. She says I'm fine why I said because you're in the floor she said no I'm not I said mom look at the ground you're right next to it she said oh I guess I am. She had a UTI and didn't go to the doctor for it got pretty bad which I hear an older women it could affect them in different ways mom told me she got to get out of bed to go to the bathroom and said right to the floor so I called my brother to let him know I got in and she was being stubborn not for me to help her up he was on speakerphone he told her to let me help her up off the floor and clean her up since that is what I was trying to do so she finally let me my brother got there and we tried to talk some sense into her to go to the hospital she would not go we could not make her so we stayed for a little trying to talk some sense into her it didn't work. I called my job told them what happened and wouldn't be in for a couple days I went home to get clothes I hit a slick spot of ice and ran off the road and hit a brick wall head on in totaled my car not one brick was out of place I called my son and nephew to come get me which I was only three blocks from my house they came and got me I got home packed my bags and back to my mom's the next day I tried to clean her up she wouldn't let me I haven't talked to my daughter in 10 years because of her boyfriend (long story) my oldest son got a hold of someone that talked to her asked them to tell my daughter what was going on with her grandma she called me and asked to come help of course yes she got there I stayed in the living room and she went straight to her grandma she asked my mom to let her help she said no my daughter replied well I'm going to anyway because you would not leave me in this if I was in the same position she gently took blankets off and got things ready and helped her as grandma was still saying no my daughter and I started talking again we called emsa that day because she needed medical attention and so got there and asked her several questions and she answered every one of them they said well he can't make her go because she is there in her right mind. So the next day we called Emsa again they came out and asked the questions again and she answered them all when they got to the question what is your name she said well what's your name LOL. She's a stinker. They tried to override her because she needed medical attention she also had wounds where she laid in bed and got worse. They said there's nothing that they could do because she had her rights. My daughter and I was taking care of her needs the best that we could be in that she was at home. One night my daughter said I'm going to bring the kids over so they can meet grandma she may not like it but we're coming anyway I was excited for my mom and I because it had been been so long I asked her are you going to tell them I'm their grandma? When they all walked in the door they went to my mom's room and she was introducing everyone to Grandma as each one of them gave her a hug my mom is very surprised and happy I tilted my head at my daughter like my turn she said that's your grandma too and they all gave me a hug oh my goodness it was such a wonderful thing to see them all and my daughter too but at the time of a tragic that was happening in our lives with my mom my brother showed up to see if Mom was ready to go to the hospital no she said to him I'm not going. He stayed for a bit visiting with his great nieces and nephews so the next day my daughter and I called EMSA they came out after question she passed them all again they knew that she wasn't far from passing away because her condition and vital signs were getting worse so they called the police out there to see if they could take her rights away they went to her room asked her question and they came out and said she's all there in the mind we can't make her go finally one of the insta guy said do you want to die she said no do you know how sick you are she said no right then and there they got her on a gurney because she didn't know how sick she was and took her to the hospital she was so mad by the time we got to the hospital she was sepsis from a couple of her wounds that she was getting before we ever knew about her UTI mom was in the hospital 3 months so many things happen she aspirated several times back to the ICU intubation back and forth to the ICU and then a tracheotomy so that if she was to aspirate again they didn't have to put her under anesthesia I walked in her room at the surgery asked her a question and couldn't hear her voice it was gone I did learn to read her lips the hospital moved her to a specialty hospital where she stayed a month I was thinking that she would have that trachlong and she would get better do rehab and go home but she required Tricare high flow of oxygen and section around the clock so we're only options was a nursing home so I looked at and researched nursing facilities all the ones that was in Oklahoma City area took traech but not the high flow of oxygen she needed the one we found was 2 hours away so she got moved there. For the first 6 months I would drive every other weekend to see her sometimes I go by myself or my son would go or even my grandson went quite a few times to see her. He was my road guy and would always put on some music. About 7 months into her staying at this nursing home every time I walk in she was getting worse I asked the nurses what her weight was they said it was 106 lb and she was also off the feeding tube. She was eating a little bit here and there but not much. After she started losing weight I was going there every weekend my daughter even bought her a refrigerator so I could buy the food that she liked and would eat. She loved McDonald's hamburgers with the buns burnt that's just the way she liked them every time I walked in she said hamburger I said I got them right here she would eat two at a time and the rest I would put in the fridge or the freezer and she also drank a cold Pepsi. Then the following weekend I got out there they said she didn't eat but all her hamburgers her weight got down to 96 lb I was getting really worried and her color was bad. They didn't expect her to live too much longer. She also had several wounds that were so bad. She needed to go to the hospital but she declined it she did not want to go so they kept them clean the best that they could when she let them clean her. So as I continue to go down there every weekend the last month she stopped eating. I said Mommy better eat something she said don't tell me what to do I said I'm not doing what to do I'm just wanting you to eat. One morning my brother called me and told me that they had moved my mom to St Francis hospita where she was in ICU and has septic shock so for 3 days I would call out there to the hospital asking about my mom and told them I was waiting on family leave from my job it finally went through I went to the hospital and she was so frail. The doctor came in and showed me her wound on her leg which you can see the bone and the tendon and the other wounds that she had. They said she needed to go on comfort care or hospice what she did not want either one of them she also need another feeding tube because the other one was not working she said no to that I told her you're not going to be able to get your medications or your antibiotics because they also couldn't put a PICC line in she was so dehydrated. So finally she decided to go ahead and get another tube feeding but a nurse at night time called me out and said she would not last through a surgery. I started to cry and then went back in and talked to my mom and asked her if she was tired yet she said yes. I told my brother what she had said I put him on speaker phone and he asked her are you ready to go and she said yes so that night before we put her on Comfort Care I played her favorite movies on the laptop she loved Forrest Gump Madea judge Judy, and everybody loves Raymond. The next day at Comfort Care lady came in had me sign papers. It took me forever to write my name because that means I was about to lose my mom after I signed the paper they kept her comfortable and anxiety free. For 4 days she held on I would play her songs which was Alicia keys 50 cents and Tupac and I would play her Christian songs which she loved Faith Hill acapella amazing Grace. I was so exhausted and watching my mom suffer and taking her last breath so the day before Father's Day I came home to grab some clothes and go back to the hospital the next day after seeing my dad for Father's Day. My brother called me at 6:20 in the morning on Father's Day and tell me my mom had passed away at 6:18 a.m. I will forever and ever and ever miss my mom I love her to the Moon and back may she rest in peace I love you Mom so very much.

Momma and I
It was two years ago yesterdayI was going to make enchiladas and I decided to call my mom to see if she wanted to go see her uncle and her papa on Memorial day. I got no answer on the phone. I kept calling several times; about 10 times to be exact. So I called my brother and said, "Mom's not answering her phone". He said that she probably didn't want to talk to which I replied, "no, she would answer the phone and say, 'I don't want to talk', then hang up." That's just the way she was. So he called her and then called me back. He said that she didn't answer. I said bye because I knew something was very wrong. I turned everything off that I was making and told my son that I will let him know what's going on. He's a teenager and can make his own sandwich for dinner. Looking for mommaI grabbed my purse, hopped in my car and drove to her apartment complex. I got to her door and knocked but there was no answer. I put my ear to the crack of the door and I heard her say, "I fell ... help ... help me ... help me". I'm calling, "momma!" I then ran around to her window and I can hear her still yelling that she has fallen. I went back to her door and banged on the door again. I can't get in. As I was going back to the window, my brother came around the corner. I said, " Brother, she's fallen". He talked to her from the front and her bedroom window. She said, "I can't get up! I can't get up". I was thinking I haven't talked to her since Friday and it's Saturday evening; she's laid there a day and a half. I started getting the apartment complex people on the phone but no answer. My brother finally got someone and they sent a very nice Hispanic lady who didn't know any English. She said to go find a key. My brother found the key to the room and we ran back to her apartment. Finding mommaWe got the door unlocked and found her lying on the floor in her room; her head between the bed and the end table. She was just lying there. My brother got on the phone to call 911. I reached down saying to momma, "I thought you were trying to put on your pantyhose and fell off the bed." I'm was trying to get the pantyhose off that I thought was a pantyhose was not pantyhose. My brother said she broke her arm as it was purple eggplant color. He asked momma what happened and she said she was changing the light bulb and I fell off the bed. Her bed was as high as your hip is and she fell into the granite table with her arm, it broke and knocked her out. She didn't remember the bulb that covered the light, flew up in the air, and fell down on her legs. They were all cut up because she was trying to get up after she came out of unconsciousness. She just laid thereShe laid there a day and a half with no water, no food. She was in the dark, no lights, no TV, and she was yelling for help. It's a good thing I called. The paramedics came in the ambulance. As I was walking towards the ambulance, my brother came out and said that if they hadn't come, she would have been dead. They were trying to get her blood pressure up because it was so low; she would have been dead within a couple of hours. To the hospitalWe got her to the hospital and all checked out. The doctor came in and said, "Do you want the good news or the bad news?" My mom said she wanted the good news. The doctor continued, "Isabel (that's my momma's name), the good news is you only broke your arm. The bad news is there is no bad news. You could have broken the hip and hit your head. You're a lucky lady." So that night they moved her upstairs and I stayed the night with her. My brother went on home as he had two hospitals to tend to. My heroThe next morning I went home to get my son ready for school then go back to the hospital. When I arrived at the hospital, the doctor congratulated me on finding my mother. He said, "Congratulations. You saved your mom's life." Now, I don't consider myself a hero. I consider my mom a hero because she weathered that storm for a day and a half! She's a tough lady for doing that. And, Jesus ... he's the one who sent me to her. A few problems while in the hospitalThe medication started messing with my mom. One day I showed up in the afternoon after picking up my son. She asked where I had been. She said, "This man came in here with a machete and tore up my curtains and then left; he tried to kill me." I told her that her curtains wear fine now and she just said, "Well, I don't know." My brother arrived and she told him the same story. Then we all just laughed. Another time she said, "Daughter I've been looking all over for you because Queen Elizabeth's coming to visit." So I did as I was told. I also tried to order her some food one time and she said she wanted to go home. She told me, "You better take me home right now or you can't come back up here." I told her that if she would eat some food I would take her home. Although I knew she couldn't go home, she told me okay and she ate. A nurse came and I told her that momma wanted to go home. I asked if I could take her home now but the nurse told me no. My mom said, "Okay, I guess I can't go home, daughter." (I used a little reverse psychology on her.) The Pic line had an infection so I sat with her for a little while. The next morning I took my son to school and went to see my mom, but she was not awake. I tried to wake her up and it was like she was in a coma. I patted her on the chest to stimulate her and pried open her eyes and closed them. I did that several times. I sat down at the foot of her bed and I cried, praying to Jesus to please, don't let this be the time that I lose my mama. I prayed and I prayed. A lady came in with the machine to do an ultrasound of her heart and I cried even more heavily. I said, "Oh, is this the last time I'm going to see my mom's heartbeat? Lord, please don't." I asked the lady if there was anything with my mom's heart and she said that she couldn't tell me anything. She finished and left so I went back to my mama trying to stimulate her. I went to her ear and told her that I loved her. I had to go pick up my son and make him some food and told my momma that I would see her in the morning. When morning came and I got there, she was a livewire. I was like WOW!!, what a change. Thank you, Lord. I asked the nurses what did they give her to wake her up and they said nothing. I just thanked the Lord. Rehab timeIt was time for rehab and her shoulder was still not fixed. She was there for two weeks, still not walking. They transferred her to a nursing facility; her shoulder still broken. She was there for I think 3 weeks. One person who never gave up on her finally got her walking ability back. Her shoulder was still broken with very little use of this arm. She lived in pain every day and did not take pain pills. She's a tough lady. When she got out of skilled nursing we took her to the orthopedic doctor and he said that he could still do the surgery. He said that it was up to her. He said that he would have to re-break her shoulder and do it or she was going to live with the broken shoulder; she would just die a slow death. So she chose to live with a broken shoulder. Momma came homeWhen she came home, my son and I stayed with her a month to make sure she could stay by herself. It's a good thing I did because one morning I woke up hearing banging. She had fallen in her bathroom. She fell on a rug so I had to pick her up. All that day I looked around the house for all the unsafe things that could hurt her. Two years later my mom still has that broken shoulder. I see her health failing. She is very frail so please pray for my mom. She lives in pain every day. Thank you. Momma is a true hero in my story.

Fear and Anxiety
Of course mask! The gloves yes cross-contamination! Sounds like it may not be cross-contamination if they're littering all over your stores parking lot. And my grocery store is doing the same thing in one side and out on the other, cleaning cleaning, cleaning. We also have purex for hands if they don't have gloves. Also the inside, in one aisle and out the other end you cannot go up and down the aisles the way we used to it's crazy. And they have to count how many people goes in the store. We are deprived of talking if we see our friends in the store like a school friend from way back when what do you think about that? Anyway have a blessed day!

Fear and Anxiety
The only two stores that I go to are the grocery store and the gas station. People are not wearing a mask or gloves. I asked one man at a grocery store, (who wasn't wearing a mask or gloves), "Aren't you scared about getting the coronavirus?" He said, "No, I've been to two other countries and haven't caught anything." Then I see parents in the grocery stores with their child in the seat and they're holding onto the handle, and I was thinking, I hope that child will not catch anything. What are these people thinking? I wish the president would say that everybody entering a store, gas station, & etc. has to wear a mask and gloves to enter. It is these people who are going to spread it to someone, and then that person spreads it to so and so, and on and on. This just showed me all these people that do not wear a mask do not care about children or the elderly. There are a lot of people in this world that don't care and I've seen it. SHAME ON THEM!! I want to get back to socializing. I can't even go to church and be with my church family because of this virus. I miss being around them. I also miss being around my grandbabies and all my loved ones and friends. My anxiety is through the roof! When I do go to these two places, I just get out start walking into the store like always and think, "Oh my gloves and my mask." Then I start talking to God, and say "Please DEAR LORD let people listen about wearing gloves and masks so other people don't get it and die." We need to get this pandemic taken care of. I just think it should be mandatory for everybody that goes to the stores, gas stations, etc. to wear masks and gloves. And maybe we can get this thing under control and go back to a normal life. I feel sorry for people out of work. Because some of them don't have the money for their bills. I'm sure it's been like a small vacation for them, but I would like for them to get back to their jobs and get the economy going again, so everybody is paying their bills correctly and not worrying. HEROES, KEEP STAYING SAFE. NURSES, DOCTORS, & FRONTLINERS, YOU ARE THE BEST!! MAY GOD KEEP YOU SAFE FROM THIS PANDEMIC. You deserve a wonderful vacation to wherever you want. Small prayer... Please dear Lord Will you keep my brother safe as he is really in the front lines in the hospitals not just one but a few because he is a director of them. And he has diabetes. Keep you're umbrella over him so that he is safe. AMEN! I hope that soon the president will make everybody wear gloves and mask until this virus is over. THANK YOU!! EDITED TO ADD I found out that the President said the Coronavirus Committee recommended that everyone should wear masks in public and that it is up to the Governor of each state to make sure that this happens. I don't think we are ready to open up businesses because people are not wearing masks. I know people need their money, and I miss going in restaurants, grocery stores, etc. without having to wear my mask. Please, everyone, be careful! This should be a wake-up call for the United States of America. None of us were prepared for this deadly virus. I guarantee I will be stocking up on all kinds for items and be ready. Just like we have to be ready and get our tornado precautions together during tornado season. Please businesses, I hope they do like everything they are supposed to so that we may not continue to spread this virus around. Good luck businesses I'm glad that you are getting to open. I'm just scared that it will still spread. Everyone be safe and God bless you!
