Nursing shortage? What nursing shortage?
Nah, we've all just been waiting for spring break! Yea, it's here! Woohoo! Okay, I can't be of much help in suggestions. I'm no where near finishing. I'm just getting started. But I do know that much of Mississippi has had an influx of nurses from New Orleans and that it has affected the available positions. So don't take it personally. Many of your fellow students may have more medical experience in general or may have made a few more contacts to help procure a job. Don't give up. And if you explain to your family the whole situation, I'd bet they'll support you in this too. Good luck!

working on prereq' for AD nursing program
If you do have to wait and you have any courses that are less than you'd prefer for GPA purposes, you could retake them to improve your standing. You could also re-take your ACT if necessary. Guess it depends how Type A you might be  My backup plan had I not gotten accepted, was to do as the previous poster suggested and start taking courses that would work toward BSN. Others I talked to had planned to go LPN and then bridge over immediately. When do you find out if you're accepted? Best of luck!

misdemeanor charge
I'm no expert, but I believe if it's expunged, it's like it never existed. So, it should only be felony convictions that show up.

Asn Or Bsn?
I'm going for my ADN now. But I have two small children and a husband busting his tail to get me through school financially. AFter I get my ADN, I can work and help ease the financial burden. I can also take BSN courses, which many hospitals here actually help pay for your continuing education. I fully intend to get my BSN, but in a way that stresses my family the least. May go for masters. Not sure on that one. The reason I want the BSN, is I'm 37 and realize I'm only going to get older. :) If there comes a time I don't want or am not physically able to work the floor, I can move more easily into other positions with my BSN. That is my only real motivation for going from ADN to BSN. Here the pay and the job are the same. We're also so strapped for nurses that many ADN go to management jobs with no problem. But I want to increase my options. My main goal is to work as soon as possible and then continue the education.

Nursing salaries by state
SELU - I have a cousin who started out at $19 - something an hour at STPH in Covington about 3 years ago. She said she quickly moved up within a year to around $22.00 an hour.

Hey Bipley.....
I have been avidly awaiting the results. So glad everything turned out okay. Bipley, that took courage, tact (you must possess more than you give yourself credit for) and compassion. I'm sure the impact you will have on her life in being such a friend, will be beyond expression in words. Congrats on the happy ending/beginning.

What is then NLN test...I have never heard of it.
You should be able to contact the school you are applying to, they should have dates when it will be given. Also, you may consider applying to more than one school at a time if you really want to get in by a certain time. That way if you don't get into your first choice, you can go somewhere else if time is important to you. Just a thought. It wasn't something I thought about and had taken all my prereqs so would have had a bunch of time on my hands, had I not gotten into my ONLY choice. :chuckle I'm kind of limited in where I can go, because I have two small kids.

It's sort of like an ACT geared toward nursing readiness. Check out a bookstore and they should have a study guide for the NLN. It's a good book that will help you understand the sort of questions on the test. It's sort of to test your preparation with regard to science, math and reading comprehension. I took it in October. I heard some people say it was much harder than they expected. I found it to be surprisingly easy. Wish I had studied the book more and concentrated on math. I scored a 93% overall, but math pulled me down as I had a 99% without it.

Please tell your story!
I used to live in Waveland, MS. We have relocated to Louisiana where we have family. Our house was destroyed. While New Orleans got most of the press, the MS Gulf Coast has been so devastated as to be unbelievable. I've not seen it accurately captured by any news crew. Waveland, Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian. These are very small towns that have been completely demolished. We were going to the permit office to find out how to get permits to rebuild, but the permit office was destroyed. They have relocated and we found them. It's just so far beyond the scope of belief. Even after being in it, it's hard to accurately recall the images with the true devastation being appreciated. All I can say is that everyone I know is so incredibly grateful to all the help from all over this nation and beyond. It has been absolutely awe-inspiring. For those who may have lost faith in their fellow man, this has done much to restore that faith again. Thank you to all who have helped in any way possible.
