Samuel Merritt Fall 2018 ABSN Program
Hi cmalfaro, welcome to the Sacramento cohort! From what I recall, I received an e-mail the next day (or two?) after submitting my Letter of Intent and deposit. The e-mail is basically a laundry list of things to do before orientation (for us, August 6th). Hopefully you get that e-mail soon!

Hi wannabernfnp/Stephanie, thank you for offering to make the Facebook page for the Sacramento cohort! I'm trying to look for you, but there are several results with the same name as you. Like you, I have a common name. Can you point out which profile is yours, like school attended or simply describe what your profile picture looks like? Thanks!

I actually got a hold of the IT Service Desk at Samuel Merritt and was informed that we may be missing another part of the letter that has our SMU credentials needed to access SMURF, Total Access, etc. They're working out the issue right now and hopefully we get that missing piece of the puzzle very soon!

I'm having the same issues too! I'm in the admitted student portal (as we speak), but the password is not working for SMURF or other portals. Congratulations on your acceptance to NYU as well!

According to the second e-mail we received (subject line: Join the Samuel Merritt Admitted Student Portal), our username is your e-mail address. There is a hyperlink embedded in the e-mail where you can sign up and create your password. However, I'm having issues accessing into SMURF, which leads to our Letter of Intent. Anyone able to get through? There's also a support e-mail they provided for us, which I just sent an e-mail. I'll keep you all posted once I hear back. Again, congratulations to everyone! We made it!!

Class Advice for Fall 2018
I actually went against the norm where I took microbiology before taking A&P. The school I attended didn't require A&P before taking microbiology, but they RECOMMEND it. Because the A&P courses were all full (no surprises) and I didn't want to waste any valuable time, I got into the microbiology class instead. My classmates previously completed their A&P series, so I did feel disadvantaged at that time. There was quite a bit of A&P terminology, so I had to look up those terms and do a self study to understand the lingo (not so horrible though). Now remember, I didn't have any A&P knowledge coming into the microbiology class. Overall, I did very well in the class (finished with a 100%). If anything, I felt I had an advantage for my A&P classes in the following semesters (e.g., glycolysis/Krebs cycle/electron transport chain, sodium-potassium pump, etc.). There really is no right or wrong answer; as long as you meet the prerequisites (and did well) at your school, you will most likely do well in the class. Best of luck!

I would hold off on the academic updates for right now. It's true that we have the ability to update our final grades. However, NursingCAS may not recognize the changes, unless it is within the May 30th-July 25th academic update period. There is an FAQ about updating BEFORE the academic update period, which states "In order for the system to recognize that you have made changes to your Academic History that requires re-verification you will need to Review and Finalize again in order to get your application into an AU status. Please navigate to your Transcript Entry section and "edit" one of the already updated courses so you have the ability to "review and finalize" again. The only way to submit your Academic Update to NursingCAS is through the Review and Finalize process." Here is more information about the academic update procedure: Academic Update | NursingCAS Just to avoid the extra hassle, I would wait until the 30th to be safe!

Sorry for the delayed response. I'm actually not from the Bay, but was actually there over the weekend! And thank you for reaching out and finding out about the next steps. Very helpful! I also hope we hear from admissions soon. Good luck everyone!

I'm class of 2011 at Sixth College. I actually majored in psychology and minored in Education Studies, so I've been doing a big 360 from my first career. You got very lucky on the pharmacology petition! What college were you in?

I just noticed that you're also a UCSD alum. Go Tritons!

I believe the preliminary review is to make sure you met the baseline requirements. For instance, making sure you took/about to take the right classes, meeting the GPA requirements, appropriate HESI test scores, etc. That way, the faculty will review applications that have passed the preliminary round. That's my guess!

I would like to go into oncology. Many years ago, I was admitted as an oncology patient, so I understand the hindrance/stress coming from a patient's perspective. The medical team, nurses especially, have been awesome in treating me and listening to my concerns. This inspired me to pursue nursing and serve as an advocate. I'm proud to be a survivor (and going strong) and I hope I can inspire those in need. Another field I'm interested in is pediatrics. I have worked with kids/teens for 5 years in a teaching environment. Every learning moment with them is precious and seeing them smile/succeed in their goals is very rewarding to me.

There is another classmate/applicant who is still waiting for the preliminary email like we received. Also given the fact that they just concluded the spring term, I can imagine how busy they are. Hang in there!

Moojoo, that's so interesting. Yay for being on track towards finishing. :) Let's keep ourselves entertained as we are playing the waiting game. Here's a question for all of us prospects out there -- Is Samuel Merritt your first choice? If so, what made this program stick out to you compared to other nursing schools?

Ditto here, I wasn't asked to report back regarding incomplete prerequisites, even though I only have pathophysiology in progress (ending mid-May). Moojoo, are you planning on taking summer session to complete the remaining courses? I'm assuming SMU is checking in to make sure you're able to get everything done prior to the start date. I hope you hear back!

I'm on the same boat as you! I also submitted my application way back in mid-February, so the waiting period is indeed brutal. Your stats look great! The stats (objectives) will be one thing, but your LORS and background experience (subjectives) will also be weighed in. My impression is that they "holistically" evaluate applicants based on the "fit" for the program.

Hello! Long time lurker here, so I figured I should jump in now that the ball is finally rolling. Nice to meet you all! I have applied for the Sacramento cohort. A tidbit about myself: - MA in Counselor Education at San Jose State - BA in Psychology/Education Studies minor at UC San Diego - Last 60 units GPA: 3.9 - Science GPA: 4.0 (all completed) - HESI: 92% - Volunteer/work experience: I was previously a student services advisor at an edtech startup. My background in counseling and rising passion in healthcare led me to working as an Instructional Assistant/allied health tutor (mostly nutrition and A&P) while taking my prerequisites. Outside of school, I've been volunteering at my county's adult day health center in the nursing clinic and med/surg unit at UCDMC. The charge nurses I've worked with have been so supportive in this long journey that they offered to be my references. Pathophysiology is my only course in progress right now. I agree that it is a lot of information to absorb, but I'm thankful for having the same instructor who I had for A&P 2. He's also my other recommender. I also received an email from Samuel Merritt about completing the preliminary review. Now the real freak-out period starts! I look forward to collaborating with you all. Best wishes!
