Grady RN Residency Program 2019
@Nursetwinky @nursenemo123 I would say that the acuity on all the units can be low at times but definitely has its share of high-acuity patients. The community around Grady is very underserved which means that you'll come across patients that receive little to no health care, who are substance abusers, have comorbidities, etc. You don't choose your assignment, the charge nurse will assign your patients depending on your competency and the acuity. For instance, you may have 2 antepartum patients and 1 postpartum couplet (Mom and baby) equaling 4 patients, which is the typical ratio on a good day. You can have as many as 3 couplets (6 patients) on a bad day. Grady is a 900+ bed hospital so you'll definitely get some experience here especially considering the type of patients that we have. However, if you're assigned to the nursery for the day, you won't be assigned any postpartum, antepartum or ob/gyn patients. You do get a raise. $4-8 does ring a bell but I'm not sure totally sure how much it is. Because we are a specialty, we get a higher raise than some of the other residents. The raise in contingent on a list of things that have to be completed after your first year in to the program. I reconsidered my transfer. You can't really transfer until after a year but year but the manager in ER will consider your application after 6 months. I hope this helps! If you have any other questions feel free to ask :)

Grady RN Residency Program 2019
@Nursetwinky No worries! Orientation was for 4 weeks on each unit. Mother/Baby is the only unit that is required to do this I believe. It makes things slightly harder as you only have 4 weeks be oriented (which is nothing considering that you only work 3 days a week), while the other resident have the whole16 weeks to get familiar with their unit. And yes, I had separate preceptors. Fortunately all the units are on one floor. ER is definitely a big jump but that was my first choice. I recently reconsidered transferring so early into the program so I will be staying on the MB unit. What unit will you be working on?

Grady RN Residency Program 2019
@RNBSN 2018 Hey hun. The weekend differentials are added t o the $24.68. However, if I'm not mistaken, residents aren't able too work the night shift until after they've completed their 3 month orientation. Even then, you will have to be oriented for 2 weeks during the night. Congrats on the Mother/Baby position! Landing a position on this unit isn't easy. So many people apply and don't get hired. Honestly, I like working on the MB unit. The women, particularly the day shift, are pretty welcoming and supportive. But you definitely have to earn your respect as a nurse around here but as every unit, that takes time. You won't be floating to L&D and NICU but you'll be floating to Antepartum and the Nursery. Scheduling is from 7a-7p but by the time you give report it's about 7:30. After two weeks you'll be working the schedule of your preceptors. But for the first 2 weeks you'll pretty much be working 8a-4:30p. A lot of the times they let you out early. I wouldn't cancel the trip. They'll work with you but you would have to talk to your Educator. By that time you will probably be on your own so rearranging your schedule and taking PTO will be a lot easier. Residents aren't allowed to work holidays until they are own their own which is typically after 3 months. But yes after then it's every other holiday (i.e if you work Thanksgiving, you'll be off for Christmas). As far as weekends, most of the time you will be working at least one weekend day. You'll know your schedule no more than 4-5 weeks in advance. I really wish we had an "every other weekend" schedule but unfortunately, that's not the case. Good luck with the move. I'm happy to help. And welcome to the MB unit ?

@NurseHan @RNBSN 2018 I'm from Florida and the moving process was sooooo stressful! It took a couple of trips and numerous phone calls to find something that fit my budget and was decent. Apartments by the hospital are pretty pricey so I chose to stay away from Downtown Atlanta. I live near Stone Mountain at East Perimeter Point apartments. I totally recommend that you look into it. They reviews might be questionable (like most apartments here) but it's all subjective. It's a beautiful gated apartment complex and the cost is reasonable. And if you tell them that you work at Grady, they'll waive your application fee ? My only complaint is that they never answer the phone. Let me know f you guys have any other questions regarding apartment hunting. I've definitely done the research so feel free to ask. Best of luck! ?

Grady RN Residency Program 2019
@RNBSN 2018 Thank you! I work on the Mother/Baby, Antepartum and nursery unit but I'll be transferring to the ER in August. The first t1-2 weeks is just Corporate/HR orientation stuff. Some of the meetings are catered ? After that you're assigned an educator depending on which unit you're hired for. Here's what I wrote to @nursenemo123 "They have mandatory classes and rotations that you're required to attend in addition to you being on the floor. Not to mention online trainings (kind've like homework) that you have to complete by certain dates. All in all it's a great program, they definitely spoon feed you for the first couple of months so it's not as intimidating as most first nursing jobs. I'm learning so much. Just be prepared to having very little free time! Oh and just a heads up residents aren't allowed to work holidays and overtime until after about 3 months lol" The hiring process is EXTREMELY long but be patient! If you were shortlisted or got an acceptance letter then you're good to go! It took about 2-3 months for them to finalize my hire.

Grady RN Residency Program 2019
Hi everyone, I included myself in this thread a while back. I didn't realize that I was still getting notifications lol. I'm a nurse resident here at Grady Hospital. I've only been in Georgia for two months. Just wanted to say good luck to you all! The hiring process is a long one, I've definitely been there but it is well worth it! Congratulations to you all!

Hi everyone! Random question but is there anyone relocating to GA for the residency program in this chat? I'm so overwhelmed with the move. Is anyone else going through the same thing?
-
Grady RN Residency Program 2019
Ahh ok got it! Yeah, I doubt that both apply but it would be great if it did!

Grady RN Residency Program 2019
No, not to my knowledge. I believe the $2.75 is if you were to work the evening shift (3p-11:30p) while the $3.50 is for the night shift (11p-7a). Depending on what shift you work, the differential is in addition to the base pay rate.

Grady RN Residency Program 2019
Hi everyone! I got an offer letter for the Mother/Baby unit on Nov. 16 and they want me to send a reply by Mon. Nov. 19th but once again, they're so vague! Did anyone else get an offer letter? I want to get to know my cohort! :) P.S If you didn't get an offer letter stay positive! The program starts Feb. 18th so there's still time!
