  1. I did a few things to prepare for the NCLEX that helped me pass the first time, after 76 questions. I wrote up a few things that helped me. Acknowledge feelings and acceptance, here and now Ohhhh therapeutic communication. You will definitely have NCLEX Questions about this. Remember, developing a therapeutic relationship with patients is verbal and non verbal. You need to listen and be empathetic. Answer Tips: silence is a good thing (allows for listening and reflection); use open ended questions (how are you feeling today vs are you feeling well today?); do not assume how the patient is feeling, ask him/her; don't provide false hope (it will be okay, don't worry); "tell me why" is not the right answer, patients don't need to justify how they are feeling or why they did something; answers should not include the nurse relating to the patient (I've also experienced that, I know how you feel, etc). Education and empathy are the right answers. I have a handful of other tips. Please let me know if you're interested!
  2. The most challenging part was locking in a preceptor for each clinical rotation. I started networking SIX months ahead of time! I found really great preceptors to work with. I went into offices, took people out to coffee... etc. I found people on psychology today.
  3. An ADN program will be very cheap. An accelerated program will be quite more expensive (very tough to work during these programs), but will get you to your goal quicker... I had a bachelors degree then went back to get my nursing degree. I did an ADN program instead of an accelerated program so I could work while in school.
  4. I wrote a blog about holistic wellness, and SLEEP is one of the most important things. A few tips! Avoid naps longer than 30 minutes during the day and stimulants (caffeine, sugar, alcohol, nicotine) 3 hours before bed Be mindful that alcohol can help a person fall asleep, but it is often very disruptive to the second half of our night-time sleep Exercising- as little as 10 minutes of aerobic exercise a day leads to better, deeper sleep (it is suggsted to avoid exercise up to two hours before bed) Implement good sleep hygiene and try your best to have a regular sleep schedule. This can be as simple as putting on your pajamas, brushing your teeth, washing your face and getting in bed. Any electronic activity (TV, phones, Ipads, etc) are very disruptive to falling asleep. Listening to music, reading a book, or listening to guided mindfulness (apps, such as headspace) are great ways to relax your busy mind.
  5. I did an online Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program through Eastern Kentucky University. I had a great experience. I liked the program because it did not require me to go on-campus, at all. I also did not have to complete the GRE (which I think is a really irrelevant measure to one's knowledge base). I had success with the program and based my board certification exam on my first attempt!
  6. Pursuing wellbeing, physically and mentally, requires keeping a few things in balance; sleep, nutrition, exercise, social connectedness, and mindfulness...I also like to include supplements when teaching this approach. Askthepsychnp contains tips on how to implement these 6 things to promote wellness and wellbeing. Let me know your thoughts? How do you teach holistic care??
  7. I had a similar path. I was pre-med with a bachelors of science in child psychology, and decided I wanted to be a nurse practitioner. I wrote an article about the different pathways you can take to become a nurse practitioner based on your current education level. If you search askthepsychnp You will find the article I wrote. I hope you find this helpful and good luck!
  8. Look into Eastern Kentucky University. I did their PMHNP program, online. They did not require the GRE. I really liked the program. Let me know if you have other questions.
