  1. You definitely need to GO FOR IT! Especially with finding a scholarship. The end result will be very rewarding. I am doing a very similar thing. Uprooting my spouse, children, selling our home and moving across country to attend school. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one. My husband will have to work and mainly manage the children. Do you have any more support other than your wife? We won't, and that makes me anxious because we will both be spread thin, but I know it's possible. This is what I want to do, and I won't let others deter me just because I'm nervous of how difficult it will be.
  2. I am not sure you can access it without a book purchase, unless someone wants to share their login with you. Maybe ask a co-worker if they wouldn't mind sharing. We share our login with each other at work because our unit purchased the book.
  3. No, you don't need to work in the state for which you are applying. I've been accepted to an out of state school. You will need to get your license transferred to the state where you will start school, but not until after you've been accepted.
  4. Bummer! All you can do is keep trying! I have no clue what they liked about me considering everyone was exceptional. They called me the next morning after the interview. They told us that they would call those accepted, then send out official letters afterwards.
  5. How did it go? Did you get in? I did. Looking for future classmates!
  6. I received a patient with AFE as a ICU RN. I believe the CRNA was on call, but by the time I received the patient, a CRNA and MDA were both at the bedside. My state does not have opt out. It took a major team effort, but we saved mom!
  7. Does your unit own a copy of the videos? Mine did and I just borrowed it. Do you have a hospital library? If the hospital doesn't own it, ask if they'd be willing to purchase it for staff. You might need to ask the education dept. I only used Gasparis videos and did the online questions from the Pass CCRN book. I passed the exam with flying colors.
  8. Yes, nursing in our area has a cap. Nowhere near what you get paid, but I imagine your area is an overly expensive place to live. My mother was maxed out for many years and would get a small bonus instead of a pay raise. In speaking with her, she was able to get to the cap nursing pay a lot quicker than nurses can today. We work our butts off for maybe a .25 raise per year. No premium pay for working in ICU vs M/S. If I continued to work as an ICU nurse for 20 years, maybe I'd be maxed out, but who knows!?
  9. I've worked in an ICU for 7 years but recently started picking shifts up at a CAH. I think starting at a CAH would be fine. I continue to learn when I'm at the CAH because I'm used to having all other resources around such as respiratory therapists and lab techs. This hospital is so small that I am doing things I've never done before. There is definitely room for growth at a CAH as a new grad. I would imagine that CAH experience would hone you to be a travel ER nurse, probably not ICU, since we don't keep patients long enough.
