Hmmm! How anemic is anemic? I am a Pedi RN and a Lactation Consultant. Many mothers begin foods between 6 and 9 months. I would advise to contine to nurse, give iron-fortified cereals mixed with breast milk, if she's already giving fruits amd some veggies, continue and introduce other veggies like spinach, or other dark leafy ones. Tofu, cottage cheese, and yogart are good choices. If she's ok with dairy. Babies also like textures, like avocado and tofu. Try it! Try making her own baby foods rather than jar type the baby make prefer that. And use a spoon. She can introduce meats at this time, small amts. at first than increase. She should RC the blood test in 6 months or as recommended by her provider. Some good resources are books by Dr. Sears; The Baby Book: Everything you need to know about baby from birth to age two. A good information site is The American Academy of Pediatrics www.aap.org. They recommend breastfeeding for 6 months to one year or longer in their new policy statement on breastfeeding. I work in out patient pedi for 25 years. We hydrate pts there. Yes, it is difficult for us seasoned nurses to begin IV's on the little ones, especially if they are dehydrated. You are not alone. Sometimes we take 3-4 sticks. And we're sweating too! Some tips: You can discuss with the parents if they would like to leave the room while you start the IV. If they stay in the room, than have them help hold the child, explain why this is important. Have help to hold the child. Sometimes it takes 3-4 of us! A 22ga angio is good. Be sure to secure the IV, using a board, cover with gauze, or follow your hospital policy. Good Luck! DMG

I'm in an MSN program at CA State University Los Angeles, to be a Nurse Educator. I work 24 hours a week in a pedi out-patient clinic, and sometimes one day a week as a lactation consultant. The course takes two years. After December 8, 2005 I hit the half way mark. What slows me down is that I have Lupus (SLE),Scleraderma, etc. So I'm always tired and sometimes can't think straight! Anyway keep marching forward!

Yes, I received a few D's and F's in high school. After graduating H.S. I travelled the globe for two years. Somewhere along the line I decided to be a nurse. I graduated "cum laude" in my BSN program. I am now currently enrolled in a MSN program at Cal State University L.A. If I can do it, you can do it! If you want it!Go for it! Stay Focused!
