  1. I usually work OB but when I float to medsurg their usual staffing for max of 28 pts is 2 RNs 2 LPNs and 1 Tech. They average 20-24 pts, with anything from ortho to surg to swingbed pts. They even have peds pts as our hosp doesnt have a ped unit.

If I was you, I would check with your local hospitals and see what training/certification they would prefer you have. Did you check out www.dona.org? I took their Doula course and I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who is working or going to work in OB. There are other doula training courses besides Dona....check online to see what is available in your area.

All the techs that work with me are CNA's and we have done on job training at the hosp where we work.

We are all CNA's and we have taken Basic Fetal Monitoring Class, DOULA class, NRP (newborn resesitation) through our hospt. In the near future, we are going to scrub for C-Sections also. Still trying to work out the details on that so who knows when that will be :)

I am currently an OB tech in a rural hospital. I do vitals on mom's and babies, feed and change the babies, perform PKU's and heelsticks on infant and venipunctures on adults. Set up delivery carts. Clean and stock the unit. Also perform unit clerk duties. Assist in deliveries when needed. Pretty much in our hosp the techs are the RN and LPN's "right hand person" Its an awesome job and I wouldnt give it up for anything :balloons:
  6. I work nights at a rural MO hosp. Average pts on medsurg is 20 with 2 RN, 2 lPN and 1 CNA. The floor can hold as many as 27 pts and if you are lucky you might get some extra help if another unit is not busy. Thank goodness I work in ob and I only have to float over there to help out. I couldnt do that on a day to day basis.
  7. I am a Tech in OB but sometimes I get floated to the Med/Surg floor. The usual staffing for 7p-7a shift is 2 rn's 2 lpn's and 1 tech...2 if you are lucky. that unit can hold 26 pts but they usually have average of 20 pts. Each team consist of 1 RN and 1 LPN and the tech has the whole floor. we have complained and complained but the upper management thinks pts sleep all night :rotfl:
