Money $ or Happiness :-) Please OR Nurses. I need advice. Should I Leave the ED?
Thanks!! Isabelle49! I kinda thought it's hard to get into.. Does everyone else agree with Isabelle.. Is the OR hard to get into? I really don't know what I plan to do after my BSN. It's taken me almost 5 years to come to a decision to go back for my BSN. Seems like I may remain in the hospital setting til retirement.

Do you guys believe that having two specialities under your experience hat will make one more marketable. I know that I'm not unhappy in the ED, just a little burnt out, and I feel a little tired. Change is sometimes good. I feel like this OR opportunity may not come again.. so I'm a little worried that If i don't take it I'd be passing up a great opportunity to learn and be trained. What do you guys think. I will always work per-diem in the ED, so not to loose my skills.

Thank you TakeTwoAspirin. I am going to look at that.. I believe the commute I'm paying about 4000/yearly for gas. Do you believe I'll be more marketable being experienced in two specialities? I do think i'll have more time to study. But for the year of training, I think my shift will be days. From what the Nurse manager explained to me.

Thank you PediCurn, Ashley, L8RRN, gingermom, bugsy2902 and madwife2002. I do enjoy the ED, I just feel I'm a little burnt out. The work is doable, and I excel and handle my patients well, and believe I'm a good teamplayer. But I think I'm a bit burnt out with Emergency Services. I do have an interest to work in the OR. Health insurance are both covered by both hospitals. I park on the street in manhattan so no parking cost. I can probably do the same for the brooklyn hospital. Vacation in manhattan hospital is 4 weeks, brooklyn hospital 3 weeks. Bugsy2002, I think that's a great idea for me to shadow, I will ask to do this next week. Pedicurn- I'm single, not a club/party person, mid-thirties here, been all my partying and clubbing in my twenties. Guys I'm wondering- How many of you have experience in more then one specialty. Is it a value to have experience in two specialities that are so different? ED and OR are completely different.

Fired....What now?
I think if you were fired because you weren't "a good fit". I think you should possibly not put this employer on your resume. Not sure if they will give you a favorable recommendation. You definitely have to take that into consideration. If you were let go because of downsizing or budget issues and not because of your performance you SHOULD put this employer on your resume. In any case the experience and orientation you've received will make you a stand out in terms of your performance during your next orientation at another hospital/facility. And you are still considered a "NOVICE" Nurse. Hope this gives you a little insight. Best of luck to you.

Money $ or Happiness :-) Please OR Nurses. I need advice. Should I Leave the ED?
I'm a Nurse of 4 years, my whole career as an ED Nurse at a private hospital (level 2 center) in midtown manhattan NYC (1 hour drive to get there), now making around 83K yearly after 4 yrs of service. If I went to days, my pay would be around 77,600K/yearly. I work 13 (12hr night) shifts a month. May not seem like much in the scheme of things, but it's tiring and i've been feeling burnt out. The situation/dilemma. Now I was offered a position as an OR Nurse in an Operating room in a municipal city hospital (trauma level 1) 4 miles from my home in brooklyn (10 minute drive to get there), making around 67-70k/yearly. A 7-10k pay cut to work. Working 5 (8 hours shift) 3p-11p, alternating weekends. The nurse manager told me, I'll receive a minimum of "A YEAR of training" before I'm on my own. I don't know what to do. I understand sometimes it's very difficult to transfer to other specialties. I think especially the OR is difficult to get into, because hospitals don't want to train. Maybe this is a misconception I have about transferring and being trained to the OR. Should I take the leap, hence taking a pay cut. Should I take the leap because in the future I will be more marketable, hence will probably be able to make more money later on in my career. One other aspect. I'm intending on perusing my BSN as well, a brick and mater nursing program that offers an online track that's fairly inexpensive, around 10k for the whole program to graduate. Benefits - Pvt vs Municipal Pvt hospital pay 18 credits a year( No cap on cost) Municipal city hospital pays 1500/year towards tuition reimbursement. Any insight or advice anyone.

Going to LA-Am I getting scammed?
Hi sonny. That's a low pay rate for LA. LA and NY tend to pay in the mid 30's. Taking into consideration your stipend. Is the 1500 a month tax free. Now if it is tax free then your making the average salary for someone in LA or NY. This can be figured out by taking 1500 dividing by 150 hours( which is typically how many hours worked in 1 month on average, 75 hours in a two week period). That calculates to 10 dollars an hour. You add your 25/hr pay rate to 10/hr(stipend)= 35/hr For a traveller the salary should be higher, and there should be a higher rate for working nights(period). You can negotiate for a higher pay rate. This contract's pay rate seems to be a bit low. good luck

Drexel RN-BSN
Hi I'm starting the RN-BSN program as well. I wonder if you can tell me when you were accepted did you get the acceptance letter asking you to pay $100 to process your application. My only concern is I want to first find out which credits are going to be accepted before i make a final decision. I am debating between drexel and Jacksonville university.

Best Emergency Nursing Book
Hi Gabe, Congratulations!! I work in NYC, cant help you with a job referral. About a good source for Emergency Nursing, a great book is Emergency Nursing, Core Curriculum 6th Ed. This book is written by the Emergency Nurses Association. I highly recommend you join ENA. It's a small association fee, it includes their journal and news letter. And you will receive discounts for future purchases on books after you join. The best of luck. vincent
