UC San Diego Nurse Residency, July/Aug 2021
As others have said, it is just a very competitive market. I was a volunteer for 18 months in the ED at Thornton and the 3GH ICU at Jacobs, rotated through the ICU three times during nursing school (so, over 300 hours in the ICU), including 90 hours in CV ICU at UCSD, graduated magna cum laude/phi beta kappa from top 10 liberal arts college and a top 3 law school, and worked for top consulting, banking, and law firms before going into nursing. I am a current health services disaster volunteer with the Red Cross, a veteran of Army Special Operation, and work as a tech at the county psych hospital. I didn't even get an interview either. It just takes time. We haven't even taken the NCLEX. They will get to us eventually.

Boo! I am sorry, Drew. I hope something happens for you soon! I never heard from UCSD at all. I hope that I was screened out automatically since I haven't graduated yet. It seems that they only took people who have already passed NCLEX. Hopefully, I will do better in the fall. Good luck to everyone still in the running. ?

Congrats!! That is so awesome!! I stalked you a bit and wanted to ask some questions, if you don't mind. I saw that you had an offer from UCSD earlier in the year. Did you end up taking that offer or did you go with another hospital? Have you been working this whole time?

Congratulations to those hearing back!! Celebrating with you! I still haven't heard anything back from either of the ICU positions. Anyone heard anything from 3GH ICU?

I applied for both ICU positions, but it still says "application received."

WGU So Cal August Cohort
I just wanted to let others know that they have opened up 8 clinical spots in Orange County for a Feb 1st start date. I received a phone call this morning that I was admitted to the program! Good luck to others waiting to hear. I know how stressful the wait can be.

WGU So Cal August Cohort
In So Cal, there are no other cohorts planned until May 2019. The last cohort, in October 2018, was filled exclusively with Cedars Sinai employees. The April 2018 cohort was cancelled, so the August 2018 cohort was filled with mostly previously admitted applicants from the cancelled April cohort. In sum, you have a better chance of getting into Harvard Medical School than you do WGU in So Cal. I wish I was kidding.

WGU So Cal August Cohort
I agree that they are at the mercy of their clinical partners. I guess that I am just frustrated because I was led to believe since February that I was going to get into this program (so much so that I turned down another program and already have all the books). First, the April cohort gets cancelled and offers rescinded. People in limbo for months not knowing what is happening to them re their offers. Then, you are told by the director herself that there would be two cohorts in August (and I'm told not to bother retaking my TEAS, when I knew I could have scored better, because I was such a "strong candidate"). Then, August turns out to only have one cohort, which is filled almost exclusively from the people whose offers were rescinded in April. Then, I am told that I am such a strong candidate (purportedly ranked second out of all the applicants), so to please apply for October. But then later, after being told that Cedars employees would get a "preference" in admissions, it turns out that I actually have zero chance of being selected for October because the cohort is *exclusively* for Cedars folks. Now they are saying that there won't be another cohort until May at Huntington because they've lost their clinical partner in OC (for the time being -- no one knows how long). Meanwhile, they are getting 350+ applicants for each cohort of 10-12 spaces, with each group not selected just rolled over to the next cycle to compete with the next 350+ applicants. It just feels futile, at this point, and people should really be aware of the exceedingly long odds in applying to the program.

WGU So Cal August Cohort
I spoke with WGU this morning, and the admissions advisor confirmed that every person accepted into the cohort was a Cedars employee. I never had a chance, which would have been nice to know before I spent the money to retake the TEAS. The next cohort isn't until May 2019. To put this in perspective, I graduated magna cum laude/phi beta kappa from a top 10 undergrad, have a law degree from a top 3 school, had a 94.7 on my TEAS, a 3.25 in science, including 3 MSN level courses in patho and pharma, volunteered for 2 years at Planned Parenthood and in the ICU and ED of a major teaching hospital, am a veteran, speak several languages, and had letters of recommendation from employers and grad level nursing faculty, and I still couldn't get in.

WGU So Cal August Cohort
I am almost 44, and homeschool two children. This was the only program that was going to work for me. I already turned down another program for Fall 2018. It's just not meant to be.

The next cohort isn't until May. Thanks for your encouragement, but I think I am done trying.

WGU So Cal August Cohort
Just got the email that I did not get into October.

WGU So Cal August Cohort
I haven't heard anything yet, but I'm not optimistic. They have enough Cedars employees to fill the entire cohort, so it really depends on how much preference they give to their employees. My enrollment counselor said that I was ranked second out of all the applicants, but she also said that it may not be enough (because of the preference for Cedars employees) and to apply to other programs. Hopefully, I will know definitively in the next week or so.

Who else is waiting to hear about the October cohort? BellaRose, did you retake your TEAS? Is it August yet? The wait is killing me!
-
WGU So Cal August Cohort
Cedars and Huntington Memorial are the only places with scheduled cohorts. They used to have cohorts in OC, but their clinical partner asked them to put that on hold for now. So, August at Huntington, October at Cedars, and then no other cohort is scheduled until May 2019 at Huntington.

WGU Prelicensure Program
I wouldn't even bother applying to CA without at least a 90+ on your TEAS. High 80s used to be good enough, but not anymore. There just aren't enough cohorts in CA and the spaces fill immediately with people in the 90s. I was rejected with an 89. Retook and got a 94.7 and it still may not be enough for the October cohort because they give preference to Cedars employees.

Retook my TEAS today and got a 94.7 but, with the bias toward Cedars employees, I am not sure that it will be enough.

The hits just keep on coming. My admissions counselor let me know that Cedars Sinai has changed its policy. They now are asking WGU to give preference to Cedars employees for nursing cohorts with clinical locations in Cedars hospitals. There are 17 Cedars employees that have applied for the October cohort (10 spaces), so my advisor recommended that I start applying to other schools. I am supposed to retake my TEAS next Friday, but at this point, it is all looking rather hopeless. #NursingShortage

April 2018 California Cohort
It would be difficult to get hired with an ADN at most magnet hospitals. I'm retaking my TEAS and reapplying for October. If I don't get in, I will have to reevaluate. I'm still pretty down about not getting into August. I would have retaken my TEAS sooner, but my counselor didn't think it was necessary. If you don't have at least a 90 on the TEAS, I wouldn't even bother applying to WGU in So Cal. It's brutal out there.

WGU So Cal August Cohort
Talked to my counselor yesterday, and I did not get in. They only had one cohort of 10 open for August, and they had to honor the previously admitted people from the cancelled April cohort. So, there were only a couple of spaces in August open for 350+ applicants. My counselor said that the nursing director urged me to reapply for October, and that I was a strong candidate. But, there are obviously no guarantees. I am very disappointed, to be sure. Considering now whether to retake my TEAS since I finished in less than 90 minutes (went waaaay too fast) and only scored an 89 (when I had been scoring low to mid 90s in practice). The October cohort will be at Cedars and has a July 1st deadline. I am going to take a few days to think about how to proceed.

WGU So Cal August Cohort
My counselor said that they are still filling the cohort, but there are only a few sports left. So, I am not optimistic. She said that we should know in the next few days.

Congrats! Still nothing for me yet. Fingers crossed.

I know one person who has been accepted. He had previously been accepted in the April cohort that was cancelled. Nothing for me yet.
