Hi!
I had applied to the CGFNS on April 2004 for CGFNS certification program. After 8 months I got a letter from CGFNs that I do not qualify for the Exam because,I have insufficient hours of psychiatry practical and I do not meet the secondary school requirements(I have only 10 years of pre-nursing schooling).During that period I was doing my post basic bachelor in nursing(PBBN) in my country. My PBBN course includes 100 hours of psychiatry nursing theory and 60 hours of clinical in Psychitry nursing.I completed my PBBN in November 2004 and requested my nursing school to send my PBBN credentials to CGFNS,which CGFNS has already received. And I will be waived from the secondary school requirement in July 2005,which is 10 years from my completion of High school.
CGFNS had mentioned in the letter that once I complete the courses required, I should send an updated application information and the completed credentials.I have updated my application information online. CGFNS has received my documents for 2 months but it is not yet reviewed. By July, I hope to be elligible for the exam, because I meet all the requirements. While checking my application status online, I found that the name of my nursing school was entered as some other name.I sent e-mail many times, they changed it but it was again not correct. This time they entered some other nursing school's name.I made a call to CGFNS to correct the error but its still not corrected. Now I am in NY and planning to be registered in CA.I did not apply for the Ny state just because of the time taking CGFNS process. My concerns are as follows-:
1. Do I have to again send my documents to CGFNS for visa screen,or CGFNS can use the ones in File?
2. Will I be able to take the CGFNS exam in this July?they wrote,I will be waived from the school requirements in this July.
3. How can I communicate with CGFNS,since the costumer service does not respond to e-mail and the telephone requests are ignored?
4. My nursing lisence in my home country will expire in August,I will renew it but do I have to request my lisencing board to send a renewed lisence information if I was unable to take CGFNS exam before that?My home nursing lisence has already been approved by CGFNS.
5.Can I request CGFNS for sending the copies of my documents to the nursing board even before I take the CGFNS Exam?
.Even though it is a long one,I am sure that you guys will not mind helping me by sharing your valuable suggestions and similar experiences..All the responses are appreciated.Thank you very much.

Lets start at the beginning..................
1. Which state are you trying to get licensed in? The only ones that you must have CGFNS for are Michigan and Illinois. With all of the others, you can endorse to them without it.
2. I would not worry about taking the CGNS exam personally, unless you wish to work in one of the above states.
3. All credentials must be received by them 90 days prior to the exam.
4. For both NY and California there is no reason to write the NCLEX exam.
5. I would go ahead and apply to which ever state to get the NCLEX done, the sooner the better. That is the most important thing, no tthe CGFNS exam. I would just say forget about it. And have you completed your English exams?
6. The documents that you submitted can be used for Visa Screen, you just need to submit the application. But if your license is expired by then, you will need to submit an updated license.
7. Which country did you train in?
Hope that this helps.............you are only making more work for yourself.
Wish that you would have seen this site earlier, you could have already had your license by now...... :)
Hi Suzanne4
Thanks a lot for such a nice explanation. I graduated from Nepal, the south east Asian country( Just wanted to mention here,We have the tallest mountain in the world, The mount Everest)and I am now in NY on H4 visa.I applied to the CABON instead of NYBON just to get things done faster. Now I want to start the processing for my Visa screen. My documents are already on the file,so i dont have to get those sent again..can you please tell me what would be my next step?I plan to take English test within 2 months and NCLEX asap i.e.once I get ATT.And do you think It will take the same length of time for my Visa screen (4-6 months),since CGFNS has once verified my documents for the CP.I think they can use the verification and can provide me the certificate soon after my English and NCLEX passing results are received by them..am I right?Thank you once again.
Nepal is very close to where I used to live, Bangkok........... :)
Since you are already in the US, it would have been quicker for you to do the whole process for NY.......California is actually on the slow side for processing right now, they are even behind for processing paperwork for graduates of CA schools.
CGFNS takes on average about four months for the VSC, you do not receive it as soon as you finish your exams. They have thousands of applicants that get processed. On the best side, and since you are stateside, you are looking at about six weeks...........and that is if everything is working as it should.
I would go ahead and get your English exams done as soon as possible.
How long ago did you submit to California?
:balloons: Thank you Suzanne, I highly appreciate your responce.
i had applied to CABON 2 weeks ago,and I have requested my nursing schools to send my documents, which will reach to the board within 3 weeks.I plan to take IELTS(What do you suggest,IELTS or TOEFL?) in two months,I need to prepare for the speaking part, other parts I think I can go through.
Yesterday, I also applied to the CGFNS for visa screen.
You are still looking at minimum time of four months before CA will give you an approval to be able to sit for the NCLEX. Then you will need to go thru registration with Pearson-Vue for the exam.
I highly recommend the IELTS series......you need the academic branch with the speaking section. Much easier to speak to a human than to a machine in my opinion.
Good luck and please keep me posted. :)
