Problem CNAs on night shift

I am currently working in LTC on the 11-7 shift with a friend of mine. There are 2 nurses 5 aides and 1 CMA. The CNA's are consistently hateful to me and the other nurse and they refuse to do there work. Most of the time the CNA's just sit down on the hall and sleep or read magazines. And we have also been fighting to get the CNA's to perform pericare after the residents urinate or have a BM. You would think that they would know to clean someone after they have urinated or had a BM. Then on New Years Eve our administrator came in with wine and sandwiches( half of our cna's are 18-20) and told them in front of me and the other nurse that since this pericare crap has started that there needs to be a male/female team go in to change the residents. It just seems like this whole situation is hopeless. Do you a. let the cna's do as they wish and everyone except the residents are happy. or b. take charge and really make them work and they will be miserable and go report us to the head people.?

As the nurse...YOU CANNOT let this type of behavior go on. No..they will not like you because you are doing your job but that isn't the issue. The issue is you have a facility of vulnerable adults who are not able to care for themselves and rely on the staff to take adequate care of them. This obviously isn't happening. I would look into your facility discipline policy as well as consult with your supervisor. Sounds like a performance improvement plan needs to be put in place and real quick before one of your residence developes a complication due to poor care.

:angryfire I totally agree with you. :angryfire What are they still doing there? Their job is to do pericare and pay attention to the residents. It seems like the good, innocent aides are the ones who get in trouble because they're slow; but they really do their jobs and don't cut corners and use shortcuts. The terrible aides get jealous when the good aides do their jobs. :angryfire

Hi There. I to work the noc shift. Boy oh Boy do I know how you feel !! First thing I would like to ask you is, How was drinking (ANY) kind of alcohol permitted ? No matter if it was just one toast. Second, as far as people not wanting to work, that are working under my license, I will clock them out and send them home. One cna asked me,"If I go home,who is going to get my people up"? I said," I am". As a matter of fact, I am a GREAT CNA". It is a stuggle for sure. I feel bad sometimes about ( overlooking some things) but any kind of verbal abuse,or out and out neglect.......... I will clock them out. I pay the price sometimes for my ethics. I sent the cma home for refusing to help monitor the res. in the lobby, now I don't have a cma. I am the nurse and cma for 60 residents. Only in LTC huh?................sincerely, angltnk;)

I'm not quite sure why the CNAs bad behavior always comes down on the back of the LVN . You write them upas often as they refuse to do the job they were hired for ,& the LVN gets the reprimand. These people are adults as is the ADON & the DON. I think It's a pass the buck prob.
