Some hospitals may not make it mandatory for Nps to have an acute care degree to work in those areas. For instance, my degree was for pediatric primary care and one of my job offers was for pediatric hospitalist position. One Of My classmates, with the same degree, took a job in a pediatric cardiac icu, at a top hospital. Mind you she did have extensive pediatric icu experience as a RN.
Also I know a few Nps that work in icus, specialties, ERs, that have that have degrees in primary care. They have been practicing for many years before the acute care degree was on the rise in my area at least...does that make sense?

Lot's of ER's only hire FNP's to work with them, especially in their fast track, due to their flexibility to take care of all patient populations, and do minor suturing. Whether or not they can work as hospitalists largely depends on your state laws and hospital policy, however, my hospital has FNP's work as hospitalists in the lower acuity floors, and hires ACNP's for the critical care units and trauma areas.
