Hello everyone,
I am thinking of applying to an accelerated BSN program in Northern NJ or NY and have a question about prereqs. I received some information from Dominican College (in NY) and in their e-mail, it states that in order for my application to even be considered I would first need to complete the prereqs... Is this the norm for other nursing programs? I ask because I'm worried of spending so much money on these classes and then not getting into their program.
Thanks so very much in advance!

Every school requires you to complete pre-reqs. Pre-reqs are how you get into the program, if not they would have nothing to base your application on. Pre-reqs include the science classes that prepare you for it.
Now some schools require that all your pre-reqs and general education classes be finished before you start the program which is pretty normal too. Meaning you need all your english, math, history classes before any nursing classes.
Whether you do all of the general ed classes or not, there's still no guarantee that you'll get in, but it is the norm in New York and New Jersey.
Thank you for your response. I actually have a Physical Therapy background and the only prereqs I'm missing are Microbiology, Pathophysiology and Sociology... Since I've completed the majority of the prereqs I was hoping that certain schools would have the option of pre-admitting students as long as the prereqs were completed immediately.
I'll see if I can complete these courses at a less expensive school or look into the possibility of taking them on-line.
Again, thanks!

Try taking these classes at a community college. Much cheaper option, but with your Microbiology class you will have to have a lab, so your only option if you need an online class would be a minimum of a hybrid.

Several schools actually do a "conditional acceptance" meaning you have to have a certain number of prerequisites completed before you apply. For ABSN programs, I was accepted to Drexel in Philadelphia with only a little more than half of the prerequisites completed. Be sure to read the FAQs for each school's admission process. Usually, it will say if it is possible to apply before completion of all prereqs.
Best of luck.

Plus you tend to get better teachers at community colleges....

At UT School of Nursing (Houston), they require you to complete 40/60 hours before applying, and to complete all before you start. However, you had to have like half of the science requirements completed, I think. Look into it - there are also schools that allow you to start without having them totally finished (I think Texas Women's is that way, but I'm not 100% sure).
