Prerequisites

Hi everyone! I have recently considered the LPN program because I work in a theraputic school for disabled children. I see a few people have posted that they have to take pre-reqs....are those the 60 credit general ed courses? The LPN program at my comm. college is about 7 or 8 courses but they are 1,500 contact hours so I'm guessing that's about an 12-18 month program. I already have a year of gen ed courses, but they have nothing to do with nursing. So do you have to get your associates before you can apply for the LPN?

I really do not know where to start because I can't even get financial aid. How long did it take for you to find out if you were accepted into the program and what kind of things did they ask you? I'm sorry I'm asking so many questions but I wanted to ask people that have already gone through this so that I don't make any mistakes! Thanks so much.

Prerequisites are those classes specifically required before you can be considered for entry into a program. I'm not sure about LPN programs but for ADN the prereqs are generally Anatomy & Physiology I and II, Chemistry, Microbiology, Intro to Psych and Developmental Psych as well as core courses such as English and Algebra.

Everyone has a lot of questions when they first decide they want to try to get into a nursing program. Your best bet is to contact the nursing advisor at your school. Additionally, you may try the school's website. If the nursing program has a good webpage you'll gain a lot of info there.

I took the NET exam to get into my school. No prerequisites. I took my Net exam in April and found out in June that I was in the program. Good luck to you!

I attended a private, expensive 12-month long LVN program that required no prerequisite classes.

The community college that I'm going to you have to take a Survey of Anatomy and Physiology course, the NET test, and then wait for them to tell you your in. That's what I'm doing this semester (hopefully), if they will ever get my fin aid processed.

At the community college where I will start on Wed. in the LPN program, I had to take Introduction to Healthcare and Basic Anatomy, of course I had to take an entrance exam called the TABE and the NET test. It will take 11 months to complete the course. It was quite a challenge after being out of school for 21 years. But like anything in life, if you want it bad enough, you'll stick with it and do it! you go by what your community college says you need to get into their lpn program. nothing else matters. each college/lpn program around the country has their own requirements and/or pre-requisites that may or may not have anything to do with the college that you will end up going to.

in general, the pre-requisites that most of the students are talking about are for the rn programs. they are usually talking about these three classes: anatomy and physiology, chemistry for the health sciences, and microbiology. some rn programs require others as well. again, it is at the will of the individual schools.

there is an entire group of nursing student forums on this allnurses site that you might enjoy reading through. lpns always welcome! much of the nursing content in the lpn classes is the same as what the rn students study as well. you can get to these forums by rolling your mouse over the button at the very top left of this page that says "forums". a drop down menu appears. click on "nursing student forums" and you will be taken to a page listing the student nurse forums. just click on one that sounds interesting and start reading the various threads. some of the information posted there may just come in handy when you are in your nursing program!
