Hello all.. I have a question:
If I'm taking prerequisite classes (one or two) in the spring on 2011, and I am applying for admission to a program that begins in summer 2011, will it be a problem? I know applications and tests for admissions are usually in the winter.
I'm looking to Hunter, SUNY Downstate, Stonybrook, that type of thing if it helps.
Just wondering if anyone has any experience/opinions on the matter.
Many Thanks,

I also plan on applying those program plus some others for Summer 2011 myself.
There is no problem in starting the pre-reqs Spring 2011 but if I were you I would start them earlier..maybe Fall 2010 i possible. In this extreme time of competition to get into a nursing program...particularly to three of the cheapest ABSN programs in the state it might be in your best interest to start pre-reqs a bit earlier.
Stonybrook does not have a test for entrance it is based on GPA and recommendations.
If I were you I would plan to apply to other schools so you can have options in case those three do not work out. There is actually more competition to get into those programs than the more expensive ones because everyone wants to spend the least amount of money.
I also assume you are talking about the ABSN program at Hunter because unless you are a matriculated student for at least one semester you are not eligible for the traditional program. However, it is very comoom to be accepted on a provsional status to programs pending grades.
Concerning Hunter you should ask someone if they want all the classes done before hand. Since the program is fairly new I am not sure about their policies.
Thanks for the advice!!
I'm actually doing Stats now (a pre rec for Pace), and finishing my BA, in the fall of 2010 I'll be taking 2 sciences, and the spring of 2011 I'll be doing 2 more, unless I can take one over winter session and then 1 in the spring of 2011. I have almost none of the pre recs done yet, and I wonder if they'll be hesitant to accept me with pending classes.
I'm thinking about applying for almost every single local program around (Pace, Concordia, Fairfield, etc. Hunter is my top choice though).. just gave those as an example, and I am applying to the accelerated programs.
I'm surprised (though I shouldn't be) how many requirements there are for different programs! Entrance exams for some, MAT for some, GREs, different pre recs. It's exhausting!
Wow it look like w are basically applying for the same programs. I taking my last pre-reqs this semester (APII and Organic Chem) but I am going to retake Human Development over the summer and retake Stats next spring (the grade is not terrible but since I do plan on going to grad school for nursing and plenty ofd the program require a B or above in stats I though I might as well pull a preemptive strike).
MY first choice is Concordia of course since I live less than 30 minutes away. It has the least prerequisites but at the same time I cannot put all my eggs in one basket. However, if I were to apply and get into Hunter I would attend.
I am still on the fence concerning Pace....the cost is just nuts.
I agree doing all these prereqs are exhausting but I bet we will smile once we get an acceptance letter or two.
Where do you plan on applying?
I finish with my initial BA in spring '11 and I plan on applying to
Concordia
UPENN
Salisbury U (in MD)
Hunter
Lehman (traditional)
Pace (??)
LIU-Brooklyn ( kinda my safety school)
SUNY Downstate
Stonybrook (ABSN and trad.)
College of Mt. St. Vincent
Like I said, Hunter is my number one, you cannot beat the price and the reputation. I'm also thinking SUNY Downstate, Stonybrook, Pace (it IS really expensive, but it's also about 15 minutes from me, so I can't rule it out), Fairfield (again with the price), maybe Lehman, but I haven't looked into the pre recs, and UCONN. I haven't looked into LIU in Brooklyn yet, but I'll check it out. I feel like the more programs I see, the more I'm adding to my list!
I really want to be able to live at home while I'm doing the program to save some money, especially if I'm doing a private school, so I haven't been looking to other states (except CT, I live on the border of NY and CT). I think if I was going to go to anything in Brooklyn or LI I might have to move closer though. If I change my mind, I might start looking to PA. I have some friends in Philly, and I know there's Drexel with a great program, and some other options.
I'll have a better idea once I get some more pre recs done.. right now I only have one (it's an A though!) :)
Also - last I heard Concordia was in the process of becoming accredited.. do you know anything about that? It would really effect where it is on my list.
And you are totally right, the hard work will SO be worth it when we start getting accepted!
LIU is a two year program but ....as long as you have a 2.75 in your sciences and you overall GPA they will accept you. It is real expensive hence it is a last option.
I am a student presently at Lehman and I must say the program is not structures in the best way but the price is hard to beat. The prereqs are the same basically for Hunter. The only thing with then is that they only count the first grades in admission. So if you repeat a pre-req for a higher grade they only count your first grade.
Well good luck with all you endeavors and perhaps this time next year we will be posting plenty of good news.
The only puzzle now is how am I gonna pay for this if I don't get into one of the cheaper options.
