Hey everyone,
extremely excited to begin an operating room residency in about 3 weeks! I passed my NCLEX in September and have been employed administering vaccinations since and I feel my brain has just been turning to mush, LOL.
In the three weeks until my start date what material or info should I take time to review to put me in as prepared a position as possible? Common OR meds? Heart tracing? Something else? I feel like I’ve forgotten so much since passing the NCLEX and want to be as prepared as possible.
thanks guys!

What education does the OR residency include? Generally, everything you need to know will be taught. Your educator knows that you aren’t coming in with OR knowledge. If you really want to study up on something, you can always check out the Back to Basics articles from AORN journal. While there are many types of meds given in the OR, a lot of them fall under anesthesia’s responsibility, as does heart monitoring. Trust me, you’ll have enough to keep you busy- take the time to relax before you start.

Hi, I am in a P101 program now. I would say to relax and enjoy for now, but if you really want to get ahead, maybe get an instrument book. I suggest the following book:
Differentiating Surgical Instruments: Third Edition by Colleen J. Rutherford RN MSN (Author) ISBN-13 : 978-0803668317
That might help to familiarize yourself with some of them. I find that is the most overwhelming for me at the moment.
Best of luck in your residency!! The program is so fun!
