preceptor

at my externship my precetor has to give a weekly evaluation of my progress. then we meet with our charge nurse to evaluate the progress and establish goals for the week. well, i feel as though my preceptor is trying to throw me under the bus because she gave me mostly 2s (out of 4) on the various categories on the assessment form and then told the charge nurse that when we work together we both get easily distracted. which i don't. i may go help with a pt when they call but i am not distracted as though i forgot to do something. then she complained about how i don't chart in a timely manner which yeah i don't all the time because i am involved with pt care and may not be able to chart on the hour every hour. then she told the charge nurse that we are both 'codependent'...as though thats a good thing. she also mentioned that i call my other preceptor all the time which is completely false and i said so.

this is about the final straw for me with her because i feel as though instead of being constructive she's just being negative. As externs we have the option of changing our preceptors if it isn't working out but i want to do so without stepping on her toes because it seems she will do anything to reflect a bad light. any advice is appreciated. thanks!

Recieving 2's is not unusual when you are so new to nursing. All that means is that you have room to grow. I wouldn't take this too personally. Just carry on and learn as much as you can. Complaining is not recieved well from nurse externs, so grin and bear it. You can talk to the preceptor to get a better idea of what she expects, but I wouldn't switch. IMHO...

That is what I figured also. I want to switch but don't want to because I also feel it would be looked down upon.

Unless you absolutely feel like she comes down on you and gives you nothing BUT negative feedback and is unfair all the time, then maybe. I had the same problem with my preceptor in school and she gave me B's on most everything and said I never took the initiative. I of course would tell anyone differently, I think and still do that she always gave me mixed messages. If I did something, she yelled at me and said I didn't do it right. I grinned and went on my way, and learned what I could from it. It was a pass or fail clinical and I passed; maybe not with flying colors according to my preceptor. But, I passed and I graduated and I'm now working.

So, no big deal. If it's NOT really UNBEARABLE, UNFAIR or down right MEAN, I would stick it out. IMHO:)

please at least consider the possibility that your preceptor was right to give you 2s rather than 4s and you have some room to grow.

i absolutely agree she has the right to give me "2s" and hopefully i show growth which is my responsbility, however, she gave me some "1s" as well but they don't apply to what i do right now so she should have marked "n/a" and i can't see why she didn't.
