Precepting in the ICU!

Published

Hey Guys!

So I'll be an RN soon, and I just wanted some advice on where I should take my first job!

I thought I wanted to start off in the ICU, but its so scary and I don't know if I know enough to be able to work there! Do you think I should start off in on the med-surg floor or is it ok to go ahead and start on a ICU floor?

Thanks!

Precepting in the ICU is fine.

A good hospital will offer you a good mentoring. They want you to succeed and care deeply about patient outcomes. Therefore, you should be paired with someone who will work with you and make sure you feel comfortable before you're on your own. In all areas, there are parts that seem scary, and any patient, on any floor, can suddenly decline. Don't let that fear stop you from starting in the ICU if you can get a job there. I have several friends who started in ICUs out of school and they loved it.
