pre-req grades

Published

hi guys,

anyone know when applying to nursing while in pre-nursing do they take it against you if you have a C in general english? i have all As in the rest of the pre-reqs. thanks!

Hi,

Here in Michigan the pre-req. are English 1, A&P 1 and 2, Microbiology and Psychology. They tell me you don't want to get lower than a "B" in thoses classes, but a C is acceptable. Sounds like you did really well in all of your other classes:up: so I wouldn't worry too much. Why don't you ask a counselor to make sure. Good luck.

If you have all As in everything else it probably won't matter too much. Usually english doesn't carry as much weight as a science class. most schools I know of calculate an overall GPA and then a seperate science GPA. Of course a C in a science would be worse than a C in english because sciences are usually 4 credit hours instead of 3. So to answer your question it shouldn't hurt too much. good luck and try not to stress out too much.

As always it depends on who else is applying, how they fared and how many spots are available. Any other answer is just a guess.

That is not true for all Michigan schools. The one I'm attending requires:

Intro to Writing

Biological Foundations for Physiology

Anatomy

Physiology

Microbiology

Math (not sure which, didn't have to take it)

Intro to Psych

Human Development

Pharmacology

Healthy Lifestyles

Also...the school I'm attending uses a point system for admissions, and GPA is the biggest factor for points, all prereq classes weighing in evenly except math, which is not counted at all as long as it's passed. Each class must be passed with a 2.5 or better, but you'd never get in with grades below 3.0.

what about a C in intro to psych? i took it in a different state when i was still a graphic design major. but after i switched my major to nursing, i took the life span psych and got an A.

A C is a C is a C. Doesnt matter the circumstance.

I'm looking to apply for summer 2009 so we'll see what happens.

You'll need to check the requirements for your school. For the one I'm attending, you'd have to retake the class. Even if the grade were just high enough, you'd not have a chance of getting in without stellar grades.

What school are you going to? I've gotten A's in everything else so I was just curious about this one grade. :banghead:

Specializes in Ante-Intra-Postpartum, Post Gyne.

In my school you got points for pr-req GPA and overall GPA, english was included in the pre-reqs. Depending on your competition, a C in english could hurt you, you would have to find out with your school

My school requires:

Biology

Microbiology

A&P I

A&P II

Eng Comp

Psych

Soc

Speech

1 cr health elective

3 cr Humanities elective

Thankfully, I have Psych and the 3cr humanities from another school. This semester I'm taking Bio, Spch, Med Term (omg that class!) and Math. I think you will be fine with one C- don't worry too much about it. Besides, nothing you can do now, right? Good luck!

God bless nurses and God help nursing students! :twocents::redpinkhe:yeah::nurse:
