Hello,

I am a paramedic (recently resigned) I am 29 and I want to go back to school for nursing. There are not many programs that recognize my schooling and experience as more than "potential" however that has not deterred my decision. I am thinking of going to Brock University as it is close to home and I have heard (mostly) good things. The registrars office has been less than helpful in answering my questions and seems set that I will have a hard time applying.. so here I am.

My reason for switching professions is that I like to see a patient through their care, I want to help. As much as I loved (and sometimes hated) being a paramedic I really believe my skills sets would be better suited within a hospital environment practicing patient care.

I am currently taking my pre-nursing prerequisites (Chem 4U etc) just in case, also to brush up on my study skills etc.

I am just wondering if there are any previous paramedics that have gone through something similar. And if anyone has any pointers, or helpful information.

I know that with my determination I will get into my school of choice (fingers crossed) but it seems currently I am having a hard time.

Thank you for your help

If you want to determine if a program is good, there are several statistics that you can look up: percentage of students who complete the program, percentage of students who pass NCLEX on the first attempt, percentage of students who are employed in the nursing field 1 year after graduation.

Please recognize that paramedics and nurses are two completely separate fields; this is why you won't find schools that recognize the experience of other degrees. Sure, there may be some common prerequisite courses, but that's pretty much the only similarity you'll find.

I have seen a few schools that offer a bridge between paramedic and ADN. I believe it's a one year program similar to the LPN to ADN bridge. I don't know if you are willing to move for school, but perhaps there is something similar near you.
